Kael POV

The listening disc was still warm when Nyra crushed it.

Silver dust settled on the stone floor like ash. Aria stood with Leo half-hidden behind her, eyes burning. Branna the scarred woman with one milky eye and the old royal-guard brand watched the far wall as if more ears might still be hiding there.

I had three choices left, and all of them ended in blood.

Public claim under the full moon.

Open war with Silas and Lucien tonight.

Or something quieter.

I chose the third.

Kael POVThe chamber we stopped in had once been a cistern. The air was cold and wet. Water dripped somewhere in the dark. Liora sealed the last entrance with her key and a whispered word that made the stone groan.Cassian sat against the far wall, pale gold hair falling into his green eyes, wrists still raw. Branna kept one milky eye on him at all times. Torren checked the outer passage for the fifth time. Leo slept fitfully in Aria’s lap, gold flickering under his lids with every dream.I stood in the center of the room and felt the weight of every secret I had carried for six years press against my teeth.Aria looked up at me. “You’re doing that thing again. The one where you almost say something important and then swallow it.”Liora gave a short, humorless laugh. “He learned that from me. Spit it out, Kael. The priest and the snake are less than twenty minutes behind. If you die with the truth still in your mouth, I will dig you up and make you finish the sentence.”I met Aria’s e

Aria POVWe ran.Kael’s mother Liora, she had finally given her name led us through a sequence of turns so sharp I lost all sense of direction. Torren took the rear. Leo clung to Kael’s back, arms locked around his neck. The silver light of Silas’s relic grew brighter behind us, painting the tunnel walls in sickly flashes. The accident happened at the third descent. The stone step simply sheared away under my foot. One moment I was moving, the next the world tilted. I fell hard, shoulder slamming into the wall, palm scraping raw across rough rock. Kael spun, caught my wrist, and yanked me forward before the gap could widen. His hand locked around mine skin to skin, blood from my scraped palm smearing across his fingers. The mark on his chest flared white.Pain no, memory slammed through both of us at once.I gasped. Kael’s golden eyes went wide and unfocused for a single heartbeat. We both saw it: the forest six years ago, the moon, the roses turning red, the moment his teeth had graz

Maya followed, amber gaze lingering on Aria with something like respect. Branna paused at the threshold.“You will need more than secrecy,” she said. Her living eye was steady. “The priest already has the transcript of every word spoken in this room. He knows the cub’s aura is First Pack. He will not wait for the moon.”“I know.”She left. The iron door sealed.Aria turned on me the moment we were alone. “If you

Aria POVI stopped sleeping.Every time Leo closed his eyes I watched the rise and fall of his chest like it might stop without my permission. The inner-ring room was supposed to be safe. Nyra said the cracked wards would hold until she finished the repairs. Kael said the same. Maya checked the locks every hour.My gut said they were all wrong. It started with the food.Maya brought breakfast on a black tray porridge, sliced fruit, a small cup of something warm and herbal that smelled like mint and iron. Leo reached for the cup first. I caught his wrist.“Who made this?”Maya blinked, amber eyes surprised. “The kitchen staff. Same as always.”“Which staff?”She hesitated. “A new girl. Assigned this morning. Said she transferred from the outer kitchens.”I set the cup down without tasting it. “Send it back. All of it.”Maya’s freckled face tightened, but she nodded and took the tray away.Leo looked up at me, gold flecks already stirring in his eyes. “Mommy, the new girl smelled like t

Aria POVThe wards screamed at dawn.A high, thin sound like metal scraping bone rolled through the stone walls. Nyra’s head snapped up. Her solid black eyes narrowed.“They are not testing anymore,” she said. “Someone is forcing the outer seals with consecrated silver.”Kael was already on his feet, Leo half-asleep against his shoulder. “How many?”“One signature is enough if it carries the High Priest’s blood.” Nyra moved to the iron door. “He is here.”The door did not open by force. It opened because the wards themselves recognized an authority older than Kael’s temporary claim.Silas stepped into the room as if he owned the air.He was tall and thin, almost gaunt, with skin the color of old parchment. His hair was pure white, worn long and bound at the nape with a single black cord. Deep lines carved his face, but his eyes were the worst part milk-white, clouded, yet somehow still sharp enough to cut. He wore layered robes of ash-gray and bone-white, the High Priest’s crescent st

Aria POVThe iron door shuddered once before it opened.Nyra stood aside, black eyes flat. “He has a blood token. Temporary. Issued by your fourth brother before the gate opened. The wards cannot refuse it.”Kael’s body went rigid beside me. Leo pressed against my leg, small fingers digging into my pants. The man who entered was nothing like the scarred commander from the night before.Lucien Grey was tall and elegant, the kind of beauty that looked carved rather than born. Pale gold hair fell in perfect waves to his shoulders. His eyes were a clear, cold green, the color of deep water under ice. He wore a tailored black coat with silver embroidery at the cuffs, the fabric so fine it seemed to drink the light. A single emerald earring glinted in his left ear. Everything about him said old money and older ambition. He smiled as if he had been invited for tea.“Wolf King,” he said, voice smooth and cultured. “Forgive the early hour. News of the cub’s first howl reached the outer rings.
