Nina possessed a talent for disregarding the word no. A frightening, powerful talent. That’s why I now found myself in the midst of one of her "pull-yourself-together-or-I-will" gatherings, encircled by booming music, blazing fires and wolves that obviously had no concept of emotional pain.

“This " Nina yelled above the drums, throwing an arm over my shoulders "is known as distraction. Welcome it. Cherish it. Allow it to embrace you.”

I snorted. "I’m wrapped in sweat and loud sounds.”

“That’s the spirit " she joked, glancing upward. "Just don’t make it seem like you’re at your burial.”

The glow from the fire cast a warm orange tones with shadows flickering energetically over faces that seemed far too happy for my mood. Wolves chuckled around toppled logs. Shots were handed out in cups. A bunch ofyoung wolves attempted to cook something on a stick that I had a suspicion wasn’t edible.

Usually, I enjoyed get-togethers. They made the group seem vibrant, secure, united.

  • I want this Alpha   Chapter 23 - Enid's POV

Sleep took me the way storms usually did—sudden, violent, and with absolutely no concern for my emotional wellbeing. One moment I was staring at the ceiling, replaying Asher’s carefully blank face in the council chamber like a bad rerun I couldn’t turn off, and the next, fire swallowed me whole. Not his fire.Mine.I stood in the middle of a forest I didn’t recognize, trees towering like silent witnesses. Silver flames rolled off my hands in lazy curls, beautiful and terrifying, licking bark and leaves without burning them the way normal fire should. The ground trembled beneath my boots, responding to me like it had been waiting for instructions.“This is new,” I muttered, except my voice echoed wrong, layered with something deeper. Older. The flames moved when I thought about them. Swept outward, racing between the trees, setting shadows running. The shadows didn’t scream. They whispered.Enid.My name slid through the air, soft and coaxing, like a secret shared in the dark.“Nope,”

The council didn’t so much deliberate as it did fracture.Voices overlapped, rose, snapped. The old problems that people had with each other started to come out. They made it sound like they were just worried. Fear was hiding behind what sounded like reasons. I stood at the head of the room, hands braced on the table that had scratches all over it, jaw locked so tight it ached.“She’s blessed,” one elder insisted, palm thumping the table. “The Moon doesn’t mark wolves without reason.”“And the Moon doesn’t clean up the mess when power goes wrong,” another shot back. “You saw the flames. You felt them. That wasn’t normal.”Nothing about her has ever been normal, my wolf snarled.I said nothing.Inside me, my wolf paced like a caged thing, claws scraping the inside of my ribs. Claim her. Stand between her and every threat. Burn the room down if you have to. His rage wasn’t subtle. Neither was his fear.“She’s an unstable weapon,” someone else said, not even bothering to lower their voic

I learned how fast a pack could turn on one of its own. When I walked past, conversations bent and broke. Some wolves dipped their heads, eyes bright with something close to reverence. Others stared too long, nostrils flaring, fear sharp and sour.“Don’t look at them,” Nina muttered at my side. “They’re acting like you’re going to sneeze fire.”“I might,” I said. “I haven’t ruled it out.”She snorted, loud on purpose, and hooked her arm through mine as if daring anyone to comment. It helped. A little.By midday, runners were everywhere. The word emergency traveled faster than any bike. Council gathering. Mandatory. Immediate. The phrase sat heavy in my chest. I had spent my life fixing engines and minding my business. Suddenly, I was an agenda item.We reached the main hall and the smell hit me first, old wood, oil, sweat, history. Elders lined the long table, faces carved from time and bad decisions. Voices overlapped, sharp and clipped.“It was uncontrolled.”“It was a blessing.”“F

As soon as I got to my room, I rushed to take a quick shower. Then I lay on my bed, within a twinkle of an eye, I had fallen asleep.I had a dream. Not the gentle type that settled quietly over the earth on full moons, but the intense vibrant kind that scorched and pulsed. Moonlight enfolded me as if it recognized me, as if it had been anticipating me. It flowed across my skin in currents, warm and unstoppable, igniting every nerve until I lost track of where I stopped and the light started.Asher crouched down in front of me.Not the Alpha who appeared proud and aloof in the sunlight, but the man burdened by the responsibility of leadership. His head hung, dark hair drifting over his eyes, his shoulders exposed and traced with subtle silver streaks that shimmered with each inhalation. When he raised his eyes, his stare met mine with a respect that took my breath away.“You’ve always been mine " he said, voice. Assured. No mockery. No barriers. Only honesty. His hand rose, fingers

The next day, I stationed two guards outside Enid’s workshop before sunrise, when the compound was still yawning itself awake and the smell of oil clung to the air. I told myself it was strategy. Reinforced security. Heightened alert. Standard Alpha decisions in unstable times.None of it stopped my wolf from pacing like I had locked him in a cage made of bone.“Rotation every four hours,” I said, voice steady. “No one in without authorization.”One of the guards, Finn, tilted his head. “Including the mechanic herself?”I shot him a look sharp enough to shave steel. “Especially the mechanic herself.”He opened his mouth, thought better of it, and nodded. Smart man. Curious wolves tended to live shorter lives.I turned to leave and nearly ran straight into the problem I was pretending I didn’t have.Enid stood at the edge of the workshop, grease-stained sleeves rolled up, dark hair tied back in a messy knot that always made something in my chest ache. Her eyes flicked from me to the g

The healer, Elda didn’t knock. She never did.One moment I was staring at the territory map pinned to my office wall, counting enemies and pretending I wasn’t thinking about silver fire, Enid’s blood on my hands, the whispers of other wolves about her, the bond between us getting tighter and the next, the air shifted. The candles along the shelves flickered, flames bowing like they recognized her before I did.“You’re pacing again,” Elda said, voice dry as old bark. “If you wear a hole into my Alpha’s floorboards, I’ll bill you.”“I’ll add it to my list of sins,” I muttered, turning. “Right under ‘endangering the pack’ and ‘being cursed by the Moon Goddess.’”Her mouth twitched. That was as close to a smile as she ever got.She shut the door behind her and leaned on her staff, pale eyes sharp despite her age. “You felt it, didn’t you?”I didn’t pretend to misunderstand. “The fire? Yeah. Hard to miss your world exploding.”“Not the fire,” she corrected. “The awakening.”My jaw tightene
