The compound came into view in a haze of dust and engine growls, the kind of familiar chaos that usually steadied my head.

My men followed me in a scattered line, chatting, laughing, grumbling about the heat. The typical clamor of a group convinced that everything was fine. I maintained an expression as I decelerated my bike since the last thing I wanted was, for someone to sense the kind of morning I had already endured.

My phone vibrated just before my boots touched the floor. Jasper’s name appeared on the screen. Ideal timing. I picked up. Began heading to the repair bay speaking quietly. "Please say you’ve got something ”

“You’re saying besides the Shadow Syndicate being three moves of us " Jasper replied, tone keen. "Sure I’ve got plenty.”

I ran a hand across my face. "Keep it down. I’m here, in the yard.”

“That is why I am raising my voice " he responded. "It’s important that everyone understands our area is being prowled by maniacs bent, on destruction.”

“Jasper " I whispered, dropping my voice as a pair of trainees strolled by. "We covered this already. Stay calm. When we verify their intended approach do we react. If I begin shouting about assaults and defending positions half the facility will start packing.”

“They must be aware " he stated. "We ought to be getting ready.”

"And we are. Quietly.”

He emitted a sound that shattered through the speaker. "Asher this isn’t a bakery crisis. This is a syndicate that eliminates first and inquires afterward. Quit sweetening the truth.”

“I am not softening the truth. I am ensuring kids don’t begin sobbing into carburetors.”

Jasper laughed through his nose. I imagined the eye roll. "You can’t even begin to grasp how absurd you sound.”

I continued moving slipping through piles of crates and partially fixed bicycles. A few of the men greeted me with waves. I raised my hand in acknowledgment. Didn’t pause. My mind was already overwhelmed to bother with conversation. The Shadow Syndicate had encroached on our territory for weeks deliberately leaving clues as if daring to be discovered. It was a battle of endurance and force. I despised every moment of it.

I was halfway across the yard when the air shifted, subtle but sharp, like a spark catching the edge of dry cloth. I knew the scent before my head even turned.

Enid.

She was standing near Nina, arms crossed, sunlight catching in her hair.

She looked annoyed. Or amused.

Or both.

With her it was invariably both. I ought to have averted my gaze. I ought to have ended my phone call.. I stared straight at her and got hooked.

The pull hit me like someone had swung a wrench into my chest. Heavy. Immediate.

Incorrect in every aspect that demanded attention. Enid twinkled her eyes her mouth opening a fraction and an inner force, within me tensed as if it had been confined for an excessive time.

My wolf sprang forward.

“Mate.”

The term crashed into my mind so forcefully I nearly stumbled. I clenched my phone firmly heart racing. Not at this moment. Not her. Not, in this way.

Jasper continued speaking. "Asher? Are you paying attention. Has the world at last rendered you unconscious?”

I gulped, pushing air back, into my lungs. "I’ll ring you later.”

“Did anything occur?”

“Talk to you later " I mumbled, already hanging up.

My wolf surged more, restless and fierce yet I subdued him with a command that felt like iron.

Quiet.

He did not remain silent. Not entirely. However he stopped enough for me to catch my breath.

Enid continued to gaze at me.

I was completely clueless, about what to do afterward.

I stood there like an idiot, trying to convince myself I had hallucinated the entire thing.

Enid. My friend. The cosmos seemed to play tricks. Poor ones. The sort you hear at a memorial where everyone’s unsure if they should chuckle or weep.

My pocket vibrated, breaking me from the daze. I retrieved my phone anticipating another call from Jasper ranting, about shadow syndicates. Instead it was a text.

Don’t forget Enid’s birthday. If you slip up more it will become a fundamental part of her trauma…and I believe you’ve caused her enough pain already.

I stared at the screen.

Birthday.

Eighteenth. Of course.

The connection ignited as she had reached the age. The age when the mate call begins. The age when her wolf stirs to life.

I glanced back at her. Truly observed her now.

Enid was laughing at something Nina said, head tilted, eyes bright, a streak of stubbornness in her posture that I had never taken the time to study before.

She had grown into herself while I looked away. She was confident, sharp and annoyingly attractive. I could feel the bond humming between us like a thread pulled too tight.

Each noise she produced burrowed beneath my skin. Every change, in her face seemed like a wind that wouldn't overlook me.

This was bad. This was very, very bad.

My wolf continued murmuring words I denied hearing. Mate he growled more gentler this time urging. Claim. Guard.

I mostly paid him no mind. My eyes however had plans.

Jasper had once joked that Enid would outgrow her shyness and become a menace. I had laughed. Loudly. I was not laughing now.

She wasn’t the girl who once concealed herself behind Jasper every time I entered a room. She carried herself as if she fit everywhere including the areas I had never let her come close, to.

The impulse to approach her and utter something anything all weighed heavily on my chest. My wolf urged me strongly. Speak to her. Get nearer. Determine if she senses it well.

I retreated instead.

The more I watched her, the more awareness crawled into me, warm and heavy. My chest betrayed me with that sharp tug again.

I felt attracted to her. I despised it.

She was fixing the bike that I rode during, off-road adventures.

I ought to have gone to request a progress update. Now that option is no longer available.

I was unable to take the chance.

If she felt the pull, she might not understand it. Young wolves did not always manage mate instincts well on their first day.

She could turn toward me. She could pose inquiries. She could gaze at me with those eyes like she did before when she needed something repaired.

I couldn’t fake not experiencing it as well.

No. I required space.

I directed my focus toward a mechanic. He glanced up puzzled when I summoned him. "Bring my bike from Enid " I instructed, attempting to maintain my Alpha demeanor.

My voice wavered when I said her name.

The mechanic raised his eyebrows a bit.

I cleared my throat. Averted my gaze.

I was unable to pay for this.

Not today.

Not ever.

Not Jasper’s kid sister that I had once decided to take as my own.

The room felt smaller the moment I stepped into it.Not because of walls or elders or the way their attention snapped to me like a pulled trigger, but because Enid was standing there, back straight, chin lifted, fire barely leashed behind her eyes. The bond surged, sharp and furious, like it had been waiting for this exact second to remind me what I was risking.I didn’t look at her. Not yet. If I did, I wouldn’t stop. The council chamber buzzed with half-raised voices, accusation layered over fear. Someone was saying cursed. Someone else was saying unstable. I heard my pack spoken about like a problem to be solved instead of people who bled for this territory.Enough.I moved forward, boots striking wood with deliberate weight, and placed myself between Enid and the elders before anyone could object. It wasn’t a gesture I planned. It just happened, instinct louder than reason.Every gaze locked on me.“Alpha,” one of the elders began.“No,” I said, voice calm and cutting, the way it

The summons came with all the warmth of a punch to the throat.A runner found me in the garage, oil on my hands, sweat on my neck, and a half-fixed engine glaring at me like it knew I was about to abandon it. He didn’t look at me directly, just cleared his throat and said my name like it tasted wrong.“Enid, the council wants you. Now.”Not asked. Not requested. Wanted. Like a faulty part they needed to inspect before deciding whether to toss it or tighten the bolts.I wiped my hands on a rag that had seen better days and worse lies. Nina, who had been perched on a crate pretending not to eavesdrop, slid off it in one smooth motion.“Well,” she said brightly, “that escalated faster than my last bad haircut.”I shot her a look. “You cried for three days.”“It was a very emotional fringe.”We walked together across the compound, my boots heavy against the concrete, the air thick with something sour. Eyes followed me. Some curious. Some afraid. Some reverent in a way that made my skin it

I first noticed something was off when Jasper stopped pretending everything was fine.He did that thing where he leaned against the railing outside the command hall, arms crossed, jaw set like he was bracing for impact. Beta posture without the warmth. Brother posture without the patience. I should have known then that he’d found something out.“You’re meeting Corvin,” he said, no greeting, no preamble. Just dropped it between us like a live wire.I didn’t turn around. The compound was loud behind me, engines revving, metal clanking, wolves laughing too hard to drown out nerves. Normal noise. Necessary noise. “Careful,” I said. “You sound like you’re accusing your Alpha of gossip.”He snorted. “If you were gossiping, this pack would already be dead.”That got me to face him. His eyes were sharp, searching, the same eyes that had watched my back in blood and fire. “How do you know?”“You forget I still have friends who don’t report everything straight to you,” he said. “Retired shaman

I woke up with the smell of smoke still in my nose. Not the comforting kind—the garage kind, oil and metal and heat—but something sharper, wilder, like the forest itself had been set on edge. My body ached in places I didn’t remember hurting, muscles pulled tight as if I’d been clenching all night. When I swung my legs over the bed, my palms tingled, faintly warm, like embers that hadn’t quite decided to die.“Please tell me I didn’t burn down half the territory,” I muttered to no one.Nina, who had apparently decided personal space was optional this morning, lifted her head from my spare pillow. “If you did, I want it on record that I told you to stretch first.”I snorted despite myself. “You’re not helping.”She grinned, then frowned when she really looked at me. “Okay, scratch that—you look like you wrestled a bonfire and lost. Come on. You need to see this.”That was how we ended up at the edge of the woods where I’d trained the night before. The air felt wrong the second we cross

Corvin lived exactly where men like him always did—half a mile past where the road gave up pretending it was useful.I parked my bike beside a crooked fence that looked like it had lost more fights than it had won and killed the engine. The sudden quiet pressed in, thick and watchful. The woods around his cabin felt older than IronClaw, older than the council, older than my patience.“Of course you live in a horror story,” I muttered, pulling off my helmet. The door opened before I knocked.Corvin stood there barefoot, gray hair tied back, leather vest hanging open over skin inked with symbols I didn’t recognize and didn’t like. His eyes—sharp, bright, too knowing—flicked over me.“Took you long enough, Alpha,” he said. “Moon’s been screaming for days.”I scowled. “You could’ve sent a memo.”He snorted and stepped aside. “Come in before the forest decides you’re rude.”Inside smelled like smoke, herbs, and old oil. A biker shrine met a shaman’s den—candles beside engine parts, bones h

Nina didn’t give me time to really think about things. That was her gift and her curse.I was halfway through my third round of staring at the same bolt on my workbench—thinking absolutely nothing useful—when she leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, mouth already twitching with that look. The one that meant she’d decided something and my opinion was optional.“No,” she said.I blinked. “No… what?”“No wallowing. No brooding. No tragic heroine monologue where you stare into the distance like you’re auditioning for a pack-produced drama.”“I wasn’t—”“You absolutely were.” She pushed off the doorframe and pointed at me. “You’ve been vibrating with misery for three days. It’s messing with my sleep schedule.”I snorted despite myself. “Sorry my potential curse is inconvenient.”“Oh, please.” She rolled her eyes. “If being mildly cursed disqualified people from functioning, half this pack would be furniture.”I sighed and leaned back against the bench. “I don’t know what I’m supposed
