Chapter 14 - Enid's POV

I lasted all of ten minutes before I snapped.

Asher vanished into the shadows beyond the garage, his shoulders tense, movements as if battling unseen ghosts. Every urge within me shouted to release him, to act as if the connection wasn’t tearing at my chest with claws, yet I couldn’t breathe knowing he was leaving once more.

Therefore, I trailed after him.

The evening breeze was chilly, biting at my skin while I crept beyond the gleam of firelight. I spotted him close to the wall, partly hidden in shadows, with his hands resting on his knees as if struggling to keep himself together. He hadn’t noticed me or perhaps he had and chose to ignore it. That detail was irrelevant. I was done with the pretense.

“Asher " I called out voice louder than intended.

His head jerked upward. For a moment his eyes relaxed, as if a wave of relief escaped before he could hold it back. Then his face hardened more, returning to that cold, unreadable mask he had perfected.
