With his suit jacket carefully placed on his arm, he walked into the lobby, and all eyes were on him.He could hear them whisper and the heat of their eyes penetrated his thick skin.He had Band-Aids almost everywhere on his face. His lips, the corner of his eyes… the bridge of his nose, just everywhere. Like a kid who got into a playful fight in high school.“There’s a message for you, Sir.” Jessica, his secretary, walked up to him to collect his briefcase and suit jacket.“Not now, Jessica.” He walked past her after handing over the briefcase and suit jacket to her.“He said it’s urgent.” She flashed the envelope at his face.He paused in front of the elevator which slid open. He stared intently at the beige envelope which had a flower seal on it. “He?” He took the envelope from, and was about to open it.“Yes,” she nodded, getting into the envelope with him.“It’s your father, Mr. Dom
The room was silent but heavy with words. Renata and Domingo sat opposite each other. No one said anything to the other, it was just total silence.Domingo picked up the bag of ice which the servant had brought earlier, he winced as he pressed it on his head which was still bleeding from the fight with Santiago earlier. He dropped it back on the bowl, leaned back on the sofa with his eyes shut.Renata stood up from where she sat. She picked up the bag of ice and carefully placed it on the areas where Domingo sustained the injuries.“You need to rest. You don’t have to,” he tried to take the bag of ice from her, but she threw it back into the bowl with a loud noise.“All this is happening because of you,” she cried out in frustration. On Domingo’s face was written frustration, but he understood what she was trying to say. He pulled her closer as he got up from the sofa.“I warned you that this won’t end well. I was married to Santiago… your son. And even if the marriage was not a ro
“You are awake?” Domingo smiled when Renata’s eyes fluttered open. She shut her eyes with the same speed she used in opening them because of the bright lights and the sunlight that seeped in through the curtains.“Let me close the windows,” he said as he stood up from where he sat beside her bed.“Dom,” she whispered his name calmly, pulling him back.“Yes,” he looked at her as he slowly sat down again.“How long have I been sleeping?” She asked, looking around the room.“Just a couple of hours,” he answered, glancing at his wristwatch. She smiled for a while before looking around the room again as if she was looking for something in particular.“Where is Nina?” She asked with a frown on her face.“She had to leave for an appointment,” he lied.Renata nodded, buying the lie he had told her. “I’m happy you are the first person I’m seeing as I woke up. I was scared it would be the doctors.” She laughed softly.Domingo smiled at her. He raised her hand to his lips and kissed it passionat
“No. I won’t,” Nina growled as she stomped her feet with her hands clenched and beads of perspiration forming on her forehead.“You won’t?” Constanza dropped the magazine she was reading on the side of the sofa as she adjusted the pearls on her neck.“You heard me. You don’t get to tell me what to do with my life,” Nina continued.“Your life?” Constanza scoffed as she rose from where she sat.“The life I own?” She beat her chest with pride.Nina swallowed hard as she staggered backward in fear. “This life which you boast of… You are aware that I gave it to you when you were miserable?” Constanza asked.Nina didn’t say a word. Her lips only trembled and her legs wobbled in fright.“Look here, young woman. You will do as I say or I’ll snap your neck and take back the life I once gave you,” she charged toward Nina and grabbed her by the neck, squeezing it hard.“Let me go,” Nina winced in pain.“I’ll let you go only on one condition. You will bring that baby to me. That baby belongs to
Domingo let out a sigh of relief. He shut his eyes for a moment, basking in the words that Renata had just said. She has agreed to marry him.He was scared she might have changed her mind after the incident that led to her slitting her wrist.“Yes…” he muttered in excitement under his breath. His hands trembled as they dug into the pockets of his denim pants. He took out the small glass box. He raised it to his eye level as he stared at it with a smile at the corner of his lips.“I can’t wait to slide this beauty into that slender finger of hers,” he said, giggling like a child. He opened the box and took out the black diamond ring from the white soft foam where it rested prettily.“You look happy,” he heard somebody say behind him.He jerked in fright, quickly placing the ring back and shoving it into his pockets.“Nina.” He said, his eyes wandered from her and then to the door where she had just come out of. He wondered why he hadn’t heard her come out of the room. Was he really ca
Domingo lifted her to his arms. As he was about to leave the room, one of the servants ran in, fear etched across his face.He had heard the noise from outside.“Is she okay?” He asked, trying to take a glimpse of Renata’s face.“Get the doctor,” Domingo said, leaving the room with Renata in his arms. The servant did as he was instructed. The doctor was contacted. Dr. Kevin was a resident doctor who only left the boathouse during weekends.“Will she be okay?” Domingo looked up at Kevin who adjusted his stethoscope. “Yes,” he nodded.“She will be fine. All she needs is enough rest. And it was a good thing she didn’t slit her vein in the process.”Domingo sighed. “It was all my fault. I shouldn’t have let her go home alone.”“Come on, Dom. Please don’t beat yourself up about it. She will be fine, and please let her go to therapy.” Kevin whispered the last word as he patted Domingo’s shoulder.“Therapy?” Domingo asked with a cocked eyebrow.“She must be going through a lot for her to co
