Waking up to the sound of loud music playing from the living room, I got up groggily and realized that the party had already started. I glanced around the familiar room, let out a sigh, and rose to my feet when I heard the shower running in the bathroom. Heās probably taking a bath. I should leave before he finishes. Still...I hesitated, I've missed him so much. Alexander Cromwell, Alexisās elder brother, the boy i once had an intense crush on as a teenager and even now, still my first love. Our families had been friends since our grandfathersā high school days, then our fathersā and now ours. We used to be called the āFour Aās' when we were younger, since all our names started with an A, even though none of us were actually twins. Alexander was my brotherās best friend, theyād been close since they were babies, practically like brothers themselves. My friendship with Alexis came as naturally as breathing, we were probably destined to be friends even before we were born. She always joked that we were twins from different mothers. The day Amelia and her mother became part of our family, Alexis cried nonstop, convinced that someone was about to steal me away from her. It was like watching a baby cry after getting her favorite toy taken away. Alexis knew I had the biggest crush on her brother and she was actually rooting for me. But deep down, I knew nothing was going to happen. He would always say that i'm like a sister to him, just like Alexis...he treated me like a child. Hearing the shower stop, I came back to my senses and sprinted towards the door, forgetting my hoodie on the bed. Wait! When did i take my hoodie off? Left with no time to think about it, I opened the door and rushed out, panting like I just ran a marathon. Boom boom!!! The sound of music was so loud that it felt like my ears were bleeding. Checking my phone, it was almost past eight. It's been more than an hour since the party started and Lexis didn't wake me up? Going down the stairs, my eyes roamed around the living room expecting to see Lexis but she was nowhere to be found and neither was Lia. Sighing because I've been abandoned in a party filled with people I didn't know, I walked towards where the big bowl of punch was and filled a cup to the brim. Nodding my head to the song that was playing, I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned with a smile on my face, thinking it was Lexis or Lia. āHi! Are you Andrea?ā a handsome guy Iād never seen before asked, his lips curving into a wide smile. āUhm⦠yes?ā I answered, my tone uncertain, my eyes silently asking who he was. āIām Melvin...Melvin James. We went to the same high school and university. I know you probably donāt remember me, but we had some classes together!ā he shouted over the loud music, his voice nearly lost in the noise. āOh⦠uhm, hi?ā I replied awkwardly. āIāve been watching you since you came downstairs, you look stunning in that dressā he said with a smile, his eyes sweeping over me. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. āTh..thank youā I replied with a nervous smile, my gaze darting around the room in search of Alexis. Iām going to kill her when I find her. āAre you looking for someone?ā he asked, his smile never wavering. āYeah⦠Iām looking for my friend, Alexisā I answered, praying for the conversation to end while sipping my drink. āOh, I know where she isā he said suddenly. āI can take you to her, but only if you drink this first.ā He handed me his glass, his eyes fixed on me, watching closely as though daring me to refuse. I knew better than to accept a drink from someone at a party, but impatience got the better of me. Desperate to find Alexis, I tipped the glass back and downed it in one go, then I dropped the glass on the table close to me. "Ohh wow!!" He exclaimed. "Well... let's go then" he said, offering his hand for me to take but I refused flatly. Leading me through the crowd of people, I was already feeling tipsy. What do they put in drinks these days? Guiding me towards the stairs, he said "come on" then he continued moving up the stairs. Following him quietly, he stopped in front of Alexis room. "She's in here." "Okay, thanks for showing me" I thanked him briefly. I could hear voices inside the room but I could make out who was talking. Placing my hand on the door knob I tried to push but my hand was too weak. I felt a wave of dizziness as i stumbled backwards only to be caught by strong arms. "Easy there princess!" Melvin said with a hint of laugh in his voice. "Took the drugs long enough to kick in" he muttered under his breath. "Come on" he urged, dragging me to familiar room, the one I left minutes ago but this time...it was empty. Placing me gently on the bed, he stroked my cheeks roughly. "Wish I could have a taste of you myself" he said to himself before walking out and leaving me alone in the silent room. What did he put in the drink? I feel weirdly weak. Clack!! I heard the door open again, "Melvin?" I called out softly, my throat dry and hoarse. "Who's Melvin?" A cold, angry voice asked. "Alex? Is that you?" I asked, trying my best to stand up and see who just walked into the room. "I asked you a question, sunshine. Who's Melvin?" He asked again, this time...the voice was closer, almost like a whisper in my ear. Blinking away the dizziness, I focused my gaze on his face and I could see he was clearly drunk and very... angry? Why was he angry? "Alex?" I called out again, my left hand moving towards his face but he caught it in a tight grip. "Answer me!" He growled lowly, his eyes growing dark as he stared at me. "He...he was the one who brought me here" I answered quietly, wincing in pain as his grip on my hand became tighter. "Did he touch you?" He asked again. "No, he just left" I confessed. "Good" he said, "cause I'm the only one allowed to touch you."ANDREA Opening my eyes felt like lifting a mountain. Everything was blurry at first, bright lights shaping into white ceilings and pale walls. It took me a moment to understand where I wasā¦a hospital room. I frowned weakly. The last thing I remembered was collapsing by the side of the road. I didnāt remember anyone finding me. I didnāt even remember being brought here. My head throbbed as I slowly turned it to the side. That was when I noticed someone sitting on the chair next to the bed, their head resting on their folded arms. Sleeping, or maybe passed out from exhaustion. I blinked a few times, trying to focus. Messy hair. Shoulders slumped. A rough, unshaven beard covering a face I knew too well. Dark eye bags, like he hadnāt slept in days. Alex. A small breath escaped me, shaky and confused. He looked nothing like the sharp and put together man I knew. He looked worn out, almost broken, like he had been fighting the world and loosing. He was right there beside meā¦like he
ALEXANDER I drove like a man possessed, not slowing down for a second until I saw the bright lights of the hospital ahead. My heart was hammering so hard I could barely breathe. The moment I reached the entrance, I didnāt even bother to park properly. I just threw the car door open and jumped out. The engine was still running when I sprinted through the sliding doors, my chest tight and my legs feeling like they could give out any second. āWhere is she?ā I shouted at the nurse behind the counter. āAndrea Dale! They just brought her in!ā The nurse looked startled, flipping through a few papers before answering quickly. āSheās in the emergency room. Theyāre treating her right now...ā I didnāt wait for her to finish. I ran down the hall, my shoes pounding against the floor, following the signs that pointed toward the emergency ward. When I reached the door, I was about to push it open when a nurse stepped in front of me, holding out her hands. āSir, you canāt go in there,ā she said
ANDREA I pushed myself up slowly, my legs shaking under me. Every muscle in my body ached, but I knew I couldnāt stay there. The thought of being found by them again sent a wave of panic through me. I had to move, even if I didnāt know where I was going. The ground was cold and rough under my bare feet. Every step stung as small stones and twigs dug into my skin, but I kept going. I wrapped my arms around myself, shivering from both the cold and the fear crawling up my spine. The forest was silent except for the faint sound of crickets and the crunch of leaves under my feet. The air smelled damp, like rain and soil. Every shadow looked alive, every rustle made me flinch. I kept glancing over my shoulder, half expecting to see someone behind me. I didnāt know which direction I was heading. I just walked, moving through the darkness with my heart pounding hard enough to echo in my chest. Sometimes I tripped over roots or stumbled into branches, scratching my arms, but I didnāt s
ANDREA A sharp pain exploded through my stomach, knocking the air out of me. I gasped and curled up, clutching my side as tears burned my eyes. The pain was unbearable, spreading through my already bruised body like fire. I forced my eyes open, blinking through the blur of tears. My vision was hazy at first, but then I noticed someone, a small figure standing right in front of me. She wasnāt one of the men Iād seen before. This person was shorter, her build slimmer. She wore a black gown that clung to her frame and black heels that clicked lightly against the concrete floor. Her face was covered by a mask, hiding her features completely, but I could still feel her eyes on me. I tried to speak, but only a weak sound came out. My throat felt dry and raw, my voice barely a whisper. The woman didnāt say a word. She just stood there, staring down at me like I was nothing. My heart pounded in fear. Who was she? Why was she here? I tried to crawl backward, but my body wouldn
ANDREA Opening my eyes groggily, I felt a banging pain in my head that made everything spin. My body ached all over, every muscle screaming with pain. For a few seconds, I couldnāt even remember what had happened or where I was. The air smelled strange, damp and musty, like old walls and dust. When I tried to move, a sharp pain shot through my side and I gasped. My wrists burned where the ropes had rubbed my skin raw, and my stomach felt sore, each breath hurting more than the last. I blinked slowly, forcing my blurry vision to focus on my surroundings. This place looked different. Smaller. Darker. The floor was rough concrete and the walls were bare, with cracks running through them. There was no window this time, only a weak, flickering bulb hanging from the ceiling, giving off just enough light for me to see an old chair and a few broken boxes in one corner. That was when it hit me...they had moved me again. My heart started racing. I turned my head quickly, looking aroun
ALEXANDER I was in the hospital corridor, barking orders into my phone. My voice echoed through the hallway, sharp and rough from exhaustion. āSearch the entire area where they found her,ā I said, pacing back and forth. āEvery corner, every house, every damn tree. I donāt care how long it takes, just find something! Anything!ā āYes, sir,ā one of my men replied quickly before I hung up. I leaned against the wall, breathing heavily. My eyes burned from staying awake all night, but I didnāt care. Andrea was still out there. That was all that mattered. Hours passed like days. The quiet hum of the hospital made the wait worse. Everyone looked drained. Lexi sat in the corner with her head in her hands. Andrew stood by the door, silent but tense. Mr. Dale kept muttering prayers under his breath. Then finally, the doctor came out and said softly, āSheās awake now.ā We all rushed in. Kate was sitting up weakly, her eyes swollen and her lips dry. The moment she saw us, she broke
