Waking up to the sound of loud music playing from the living room, I got up groggily and realized that the party had already started. I glanced around the familiar room, let out a sigh, and rose to my feet when I heard the shower running in the bathroom. Heâs probably taking a bath. I should leave before he finishes. Still...I hesitated, I've missed him so much. Alexander Cromwell, Alexisâs elder brother, the boy i once had an intense crush on as a teenager and even now, still my first love. Our families had been friends since our grandfathersâ high school days, then our fathersâ and now ours. We used to be called the âFour Aâs' when we were younger, since all our names started with an A, even though none of us were actually twins. Alexander was my brotherâs best friend, theyâd been close since they were babies, practically like brothers themselves. My friendship with Alexis came as naturally as breathing, we were probably destined to be friends even before we were born. She always joked that we were twins from different mothers. The day Amelia and her mother became part of our family, Alexis cried nonstop, convinced that someone was about to steal me away from her. It was like watching a baby cry after getting her favorite toy taken away. Alexis knew I had the biggest crush on her brother and she was actually rooting for me. But deep down, I knew nothing was going to happen. He would always say that i'm like a sister to him, just like Alexis...he treated me like a child. Hearing the shower stop, I came back to my senses and sprinted towards the door, forgetting my hoodie on the bed. Wait! When did i take my hoodie off? Left with no time to think about it, I opened the door and rushed out, panting like I just ran a marathon. Boom boom!!! The sound of music was so loud that it felt like my ears were bleeding. Checking my phone, it was almost past eight. It's been more than an hour since the party started and Lexis didn't wake me up? Going down the stairs, my eyes roamed around the living room expecting to see Lexis but she was nowhere to be found and neither was Lia. Sighing because I've been abandoned in a party filled with people I didn't know, I walked towards where the big bowl of punch was and filled a cup to the brim. Nodding my head to the song that was playing, I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned with a smile on my face, thinking it was Lexis or Lia. âHi! Are you Andrea?â a handsome guy Iâd never seen before asked, his lips curving into a wide smile. âUhm⌠yes?â I answered, my tone uncertain, my eyes silently asking who he was. âIâm Melvin...Melvin James. We went to the same high school and university. I know you probably donât remember me, but we had some classes together!â he shouted over the loud music, his voice nearly lost in the noise. âOh⌠uhm, hi?â I replied awkwardly. âIâve been watching you since you came downstairs, you look stunning in that dressâ he said with a smile, his eyes sweeping over me. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. âTh..thank youâ I replied with a nervous smile, my gaze darting around the room in search of Alexis. Iâm going to kill her when I find her. âAre you looking for someone?â he asked, his smile never wavering. âYeah⌠Iâm looking for my friend, Alexisâ I answered, praying for the conversation to end while sipping my drink. âOh, I know where she isâ he said suddenly. âI can take you to her, but only if you drink this first.â He handed me his glass, his eyes fixed on me, watching closely as though daring me to refuse. I knew better than to accept a drink from someone at a party, but impatience got the better of me. Desperate to find Alexis, I tipped the glass back and downed it in one go, then I dropped the glass on the table close to me. "Ohh wow!!" He exclaimed. "Well... let's go then" he said, offering his hand for me to take but I refused flatly. Leading me through the crowd of people, I was already feeling tipsy. What do they put in drinks these days? Guiding me towards the stairs, he said "come on" then he continued moving up the stairs. Following him quietly, he stopped in front of Alexis room. "She's in here." "Okay, thanks for showing me" I thanked him briefly. I could hear voices inside the room but I could make out who was talking. Placing my hand on the door knob I tried to push but my hand was too weak. I felt a wave of dizziness as i stumbled backwards only to be caught by strong arms. "Easy there princess!" Melvin said with a hint of laugh in his voice. "Took the drugs long enough to kick in" he muttered under his breath. "Come on" he urged, dragging me to familiar room, the one I left minutes ago but this time...it was empty. Placing me gently on the bed, he stroked my cheeks roughly. "Wish I could have a taste of you myself" he said to himself before walking out and leaving me alone in the silent room. What did he put in the drink? I feel weirdly weak. Clack!! I heard the door open again, "Melvin?" I called out softly, my throat dry and hoarse. "Who's Melvin?" A cold, angry voice asked. "Alex? Is that you?" I asked, trying my best to stand up and see who just walked into the room. "I asked you a question, sunshine. Who's Melvin?" He asked again, this time...the voice was closer, almost like a whisper in my ear. Blinking away the dizziness, I focused my gaze on his face and I could see he was clearly drunk and very... angry? Why was he angry? "Alex?" I called out again, my left hand moving towards his face but he caught it in a tight grip. "Answer me!" He growled lowly, his eyes growing dark as he stared at me. "He...he was the one who brought me here" I answered quietly, wincing in pain as his grip on my hand became tighter. "Did he touch you?" He asked again. "No, he just left" I confessed. "Good" he said, "cause I'm the only one allowed to touch you."ANDREA âI do.âThe words left my lips, soft but steady, even though my heart was beating so loudly in my chest I was sure everyone could hear it. My hands trembled just a little as Alex took my left hand, his thumb brushing over my fingers in a way that calmed me instantly.âI do,â he said right after, his voice firm and full of emotion. He slid the ring onto my finger, and the moment it settled there, something inside me finally clicked into place. This was real. This was happening. All the pain, all the fear, all the loss had led us here. The priest smiled warmly at us. âYou may kiss your bride.âAlex did not rush it. He leaned in slowly, his hand resting at my waist as his lips met mine. The kiss was gentle but deep, full of everything we had survived together. My knees weakened slightly, and I had to lean into him to steady myself. I heard soft laughter and quiet sighs around us, but in that moment, it felt like there was no one else in the world. When we pulled apart, the chur
ANDREAA few month had passed since everything happened, but it felt like the pain was still fresh. I still wasnât over Liaâs death. Her burial had been two months ago, but I barely remembered any of it. I spent the entire time crying, numb and lost, watching people say their goodbyes while my chest ached like it would never stop. I missed her, my sweet little sister, more than I could put into words.Dad had finalized the divorce with my stepmother after everything she had done, and slowly, things were starting to go back to normal. Aliya had been sentenced to life in prison without the chance of bail, but knowing she was behind bars didnât take away the scar on my heart. Nothing could erase the betrayal, the fear, or the knowledge that someone so close to us had caused so much pain.I decided to bury myself in work. Designing new pieces, planning fashion shows, and spending time with Kate and Lexi became my escape. We laughed, planned, and created together, and in those moments
ALEXANDER A few days later, the final results came in.I stood in a quiet room with files spread across the table, listening as everything was explained to me in clear, calm words. The DNA tests were complete. The dental records matched. There was no room left for doubt. The body was Lia Dale. The real Lia.According to the autopsy, she had been hit on the head. The injury alone would not have killed her, but it would have left her disoriented and weak. The cause of death was drowning. The investigators believed she had been pushed off a bridge into the water below. Her body stayed trapped somewhere downstream until time and rain finally carried it into the small stream near our construction site.Three years.Lia had been dead for three years.I sat back in the chair, my chest tight, my thoughts spinning. Nothing made sense and yet everything suddenly did. Every strange moment. Every uneasy feeling Andrea had. Every time something about Lia felt wrong but could never be explained.
ALEXANDERI walked into my office and loosened my tie, my mind already back at home with Andrea. The meeting had dragged longer than it should have, and all I wanted was to get out of here and get back to her. I was reaching for my jacket when the door opened.Cole stepped in, his expression serious.âBefore you leave,â he said, closing the door behind him, âwe found something on the new site.âThat made me stop. I turned to face him. âFound what?âCole did not answer right away. He tapped his iPad and turned the screen toward me.âJust watch,â he said quietly. The video started playing. It was shaky, clearly taken by someone on site. I leaned forward without realizing it. The camera showed a narrow stream at the edge of the land we had just acquired for the new project. The water was shallow, barely moving. Then I saw it.A body lay half in the water, half on the muddy bank.I frowned immediately. The body was in bad shape. Too much time had passed. The face was swollen and unrecogni
ANDREA The memory hit me all at once and my chest tightened. I looked up at my stepmother, my heart beating hard. âThe necklace,â I said quickly. âMy momâs necklace. How did you get it?â The room went very quiet. âThat necklace was never found on my motherâs body,â I continued, my voice shaking despite my effort to stay calm. âSo it didnât just appear out of nowhere. You had it. And I want to know why.â My father turned to her slowly, confusion clear on his face. âWhat necklace is she talking about?â My stepmotherâs lips parted, then closed again. She looked at Andrew, then at me, and for the first time since I walked into the room, she looked nervous. Andrew stepped forward. âAnswer her,â he said firmly. âNo lies this time.â She swallowed hard. âI⌠I did not steal it,â she said quickly. âI never meant to hide it.â âThat is not what she asked,â Andrew replied. âShe asked how you got it.â "The night of the accident," she started and we all stared at her like she was going to
ANDREAMy stepmother straightened in her seat, clearly confused. âWhat is going on?â she asked, her voice tight. âAndrew, you are scaring everyone.âAndrew exhaled slowly, like he had been holding it in for too long. âAfter Andrea was kidnapped, Alex and I agreed on one thing,â he said. âWe did not trust Lia. Not then. Not now.âMy stomach sank a little at her name.âSo we started looking into her,â Andrew continued. âAt first it was just her. Her movements. Her contacts. Her past. But then we realized something did not sit right, so we widened the search.âMy father frowned. âWidened it how?ââTo the Grey family,â Andrew said. âBefore the divorce. Before you married Mom.â His eyes flicked briefly to my stepmother, then back to my father. âWe decided to investigate the entire family history.âThe room went quiet.Andrew clasped his hands together. âWhat we found took time. A lot of time. Records buried. Names altered. Places changed. But eventually, it all lined up.âI felt my chest t
