LOGINâ MINNESOTA: At the airportâŚ
âThanks mom, thanks dadâ Brianna said to her parents as they got to the airport.
âDon't be silly, we'll stay with you until your flight is about to take off,â her mother said, holding her hand. âMom, I'm a grown woman, I can take care of myselfâ she informed.
âNot too grown for usâ her dad chipped in. She smiled, âwhatever.â They all walked to the waiting area.
âWill you come home after this semester?â Her mother asked. Brianna knew her parents wanted her to come but she had other plans.
It was the semester before her final semester in college, she wanted to start getting herself ready for life after school, and try to gain a few job experiences.
âNo, mom,â she replied. âWhy?!!!â Both parents chorused. She subconsciously rolled her eyes.
âDo you roll your eyes at your lecturers too?â Her father asked. 'Oh my Lord' Brianna cried inwardly.
She prayed for her flight to set off soon.
âWhy don't you want to come home? It's the semester before your very last day in college, don't you think you would need to unwind for the final semester?â Her mother asked. âMom, I have other plans,â she said. âWhat plans can be better than spending time with family?â Her father asked softly.
Brianna tried not to roll her eyes again. She was mentally prepared for this and she wasn't going to give in.
She had spent all her holidays at home. Her parents always call her home to spend time with them but this time, she wants something different.
âMom, dad, I just want to do something different this time. Can you let me, please?â She begged. That was the best way to get to her parents â asking them nicely. âFine. But make sure you come home once you start feeling uncomfortableâ her father said. âSure, dad,â she replied with a smile.
The flight to New York was announced to take off soon, so she picked up her bag, hugged her parents and ran off.
âBe careful, baby,â her mother shouted from where she stood. She turned, waved at them one more time before disappearing.
It felt like she was let off a leash. Her parents never grow weary of being so mindful of her. One time they even visited her unannounced in school, during her freshman year. It was embarrassing for her, she felt like a high schooler.
This was shortly after they both saw her off to New York like she was going to get lost or kidnapped.
âHmphâ she sighed heavily and put her headset around her ears.

â FROSTBORNE PACKâŚ
âCan't you spend a little more time with your old woman?â Marissa said to Derek, holding his hand.
âCome on mom, you're not oldâ he said hugging his mother, âyou look younger than most humans your ageâ he said, touching her cheeks. Marissa blushed.
âThat's my wife, do well to marry yours and stop being all lovey dovey with mineâ his father said as he stepped out to join them.
Derek smiled at his father, âcut me some slack, paâ he said, âMake sure you visit with a lady next time. I would love itâ Alec added
Derek smiled again, and hugged his father, âI hope you live long, because we still have a long way to goâ he said and Marissa laughed.
âDon't give your father a panic attack. He's still the people's Alphaâ she said. âOf course, mom,â Derek replied, amidst laughter. âThat's not even funny,â his father said jokingly.
âI might marry someone for you if you keep slackingâ his father said
âYou're the Alpha and can marry as many as possible, irrespective of age, so go aheadâ Derek replied as he walked to his car.
One of the drivers tried to drive him but he stretched his hands for the key. âI'll drive, Melvin,â he said.
âNow why won't you let the driver drop you off?â His father asked, he only smiled in response.
âLet him be,â Marissa whispered to her husband.
âHow about Rowan?â His mother asked instead
âHe left yesterday. Had a few things to fix at the office before my arrivalâ he replied. âOkay, drive safelyâ she told him.
He blew her a kiss.
âBye mother. Bye fatherâ with that he sped off.
âThat boy,â his father said as he watched him.
âOur boy is now a man,â Marissa said.
Her husband nodded in agreement.

NEW YORK
Brianna was on FaceTime with her father. âYes dad, I'm in my dorm nowâ she said.
âOkay. Are you done unpacking?â He asked. âOn itâ she replied. âWhere's mom?â She asked.
âShe went to get groceries,â he replied.
Brianna's countenance dropped. They had packed everything for her again.
It happens every time she's to go back to school. They pack everything untouched at home and start buying in bits.
âBaby, what's with the long face?â Her father asked.
âYou guys always pack everything for me whenever I return to school,â she complained. âOf course. You're our angelâ her dad replied.
âDad, I'll be 22 in no time. I can take care of myselfâ she said.
âYou're still 21 for now. And you mean take care of yourself by doing numerous menial jobs? We didn't send you to New York for that. New York is about school and we want you to stay focusedâ he said.
She knew she wasn't going to win, so she didn't drag it. They've had the same conversation over and over again, but something is going to change soon.
âOkay, dad. Let her know I arrived safely. I need to unpack nowâ she said.
âBe careful,â her father said, before she ended the call. They never get tired of treating me like a child, she thought.
Brianna already made a resolve to look for a part-time job this final year, irrespective of her parents' opposition. Telling her parents she needed more pocket money would make them seek for more jobs and keep wearing out due to stress.
The best thing was to keep it secret from them, afterall, Seattle was at least 7 hours away from New York and she already made them swear that they would inform her about their coming whenever they planned to visit her in school again.
Brianna opened a website for part-time jobs and started scrolling, weighing benefits and how it could be combined with her classes for the semester. Almost everything crashed with classes until something struck her eyes; there was an opening at Frostborne corporation.
âNot like I stand a chance, by the wayâ she said and kept scrolling.
She came across the same advert again, Frostborne was in need of part-time workers to assist the full time workers. âSuch an opportunity to work for your company comes once in a lifetimeâ she said before opening the advertisement and reading its description.
Undergraduates can apply! Her smile beamed. She quickly applied and hoped to get picked for the interview.
Frostborne was the biggest conglomerate in New York. Working with one of its subsidiaries is every New Yorker's dream, especially fresh graduates. Brianna wasn't left out. After unpacking, she checked her email, nothing yet.
Maybe I wasn't shortlisted for the interview, she thought and began scrolling the website again.
An email notification popped on her laptop, she hurriedly opened it but it wasn't from Frostborne. An eatery she applied for earlier, asked that she come for an interview the following day.
Then it dawned on her, Frostborne? Who am I kidding?, She laughed at herself for thinking she stood a chance at Frostborne.
âAt least I got somethingâ she said and tucked her phone away to catch some sleep.
She'll try Frostborne again with a certificate, after graduation, for now, Frostborne was out of her reach.

â NEW YORKâŚâDo you love her?â Rowan asked. Something shifted in Derek. He wasn't expecting that question. He was expecting Rowan to ask about something but not that.He turned to Rowan who had his eyes fixed on him.Truthfully, he didn't know if what he felt for Brianna could be classified as love. Of course, he cares about her and enjoys her company, that couldn't be love, but is that what love is about? He wondered He cared for Lisa too, though not as much as he does for Brianna, but he did. He gave her a lot of gifts, made sure she was comfortable, never lacked anything, took her out a few times and also enjoyed her company and it didn't feel like love. What could be so different about Brianna's case? Why would Rowan ask him that? What appeared different? He doesn't know how to love or rather what it means to love someone. He doesn't know how to feel when he's loving someone or what to do that he hasn't done for Lisa.Could it be that he loved Lisa too? No way! Derek knew whateve
â NEW YORKâŚBrianna and Riley were both discharged the following day.Brianna appeared a lot stable like nothing had happened, which was surprising because she felt she was going to die at that instant. The doctor's report states that she passed out due to shock and brain strain which was strange to Brianna because she's been resting a lot and has been well before the situation.Derek drove them home.âThank you, Derekâ Riley said to Derek as she sunk into her bed tiredly.âMy pleasure, even though I still don't know what happened between you twoâ he said, looking between Riley and Brianna.Riley was surprised that Brianna had kept her boyfriend in the dark all along and still didn't say a word so she just kept quiet too, not wanting to be the one to divulge.âAt least no one diedâ Riley said cheerfully insteadâSomeone lost consciousness, that's close to dying,â Derek argued, Brianna rolled her eyes.âI'm fine, you two. And Derek, thank you so much for everything. I'm fine, I promise,
â NEW YORKâŚDerek got to Rm. 215 and burst the door open with so much vigor. The nurse who was attending to Brianna shivered at the sound. She turned to face Derek, âWho areâŚâ she was about to ask when Derek ran to Brianna and hugged her, to the dismay of the nurse, âOhh! Who are you, please?â The nurse tried again Brianna laid still but laughed at the nurse's reaction to Derekâs hug. Derek turned to the nurse , âIâm her boyfriend. How is she?â He asked. The nurseâ eyes finally calmed down. She sighed in relief, âShe's in no danger, you may calm downâ she assured. Derek breathed out in relief too. How scared he was for her. This points to why the Alpha hates the idea of human marriage since they can barely protect themselves but at least she was only ill and anyone could fall sick.He sat on the bed, holding Brianna's hand, she tried to talk but he shushed her. He didn't want her straining, she needed to get enough rest. The nurse finished examining Brianna and nodded, âthere's no d
NEW YORKâŚ.Derek was in a meeting with a foreign investor whom he's been trying to get hold of for a long time. He was happy to finally have him show interest in Frostborne. It was basically for a partnership outside America.In-between the meeting, his phone rang, but he ignored it and paid attention to his investor. It rang again. He was sure he turned on the DND option, and the only person that could reach him even when it's on DND was Brianna. His mind snapped. His eyes widened at the realization and he brought out his phone from his pocket. It was indeed Brianna. He immediately felt dizzy, something wasn't right. Not that she doesnât call more than once or he doesn't miss her calls at all but this particular one felt odd.âGentlemen, please excuse meâ he said to his subordinates, and ran out. Rowan followed him out worriedly. It's unlike Derek to abandon a meeting to answer a call, no matter how important it seemed to be.Derek answered the call once he was out of the hall, âHel
â NEW YORKâŚâLondonâ Riley said and Brianna choked on her pizza, coughing violently.âOh my! Are you okay?â Riley asked and handed her water. Brianna gulped and tried to calm herself down.âWhat?!! London? What London?â She asked as she dropped the cup. At that point, Riley's eyes seemed to wonder a little, why's she so shocked? And how many Londons are there?âJust because..â Riley started, Brianna edged closer to her as if to remove the information from her bellyâJust because?â Brianna asked impatiently.âLondon is a nice place,â Riley said and paused as if looking for more details to give, âYes, just because London is a nice placeâ she said finally âOh my! Have you experienced the weather? Superp! I've always loved London thoughâ Riley added, trying to sound enthusiastic about the idea of moving to London all of a sudden. Brianna just looked at her eyes which appeared sad at this point but she's trying so hard to keep it normal. She was trying to hide her sadness so badly but fail
â NEW YORKâŚThe semester was going smoothly for Brianna. Her joy knew no boundaries as it was her very last semester as an undergraduate.âCan't wait to be done with school and face life squarely,â she said to Riley who didn't reply. She turned to her and Riley seemed to be staring at her phone in horror.Brianna walked to her bed, âare you okay?â She asked but Riley's eyes were still glued to her phone, she looked frozen.âRiley! Riley! Riley!â Brianna yelled at her, shaking her to make sure she heard her.Riley let her phone drop on her bed and hugged Brianna so tight that she could barely breathe. They stayed that way for a while.Brianna kept patting her back and at intervals, caressed her hair. Her parents used to do that to her whenever she was scared and Riley looked scared at the moment. After what seemed like forever, Riley let Brianna go. Her eyes were red, misty, puffy and she was sniffling badly. How was she able to cry on her shoulder without a sound? Brianna wondered.Bri
