I made lunch for myself and ate alone.

Instant noodles, standing at the counter, listening to the quiet of a house where apparently only one person had decided to come downstairs. I didn’t think much about where Kai was. Business of his own, probably. I rinsed my bowl and went upstairs and lay down.

I was more tired than I’d realised.

When I opened my eyes again my phone said nine o’clock.

I blinked at it for a moment. Then I looked at the ceiling — at the light fixture, still on, still working

Kai’s POVI read the note. Are you mad at me?I looked at it for a moment. Then at him — at the careful, sideways tension he was carrying, the way he’d been glancing over every two minutes since I sat down with the focused anxiety of someone waiting for a verdict.Mad at him. Was I?I turned the question over honestly. What I had felt when I walked into that classroom and found Ken’s hands wrapped around Noah’s — that hadn’t been anger at Noah. It had been something else, directed somewhere else, wearing anger’s shape. Ken was not a good person. Going behind someone’s back with what they’d trusted you with was not a small thing, and I had known it before Noah had, and he had called me a jerk for saying so, and now here we were.I pulled his chair over to mine.He startled — the full, genuine surprise of someone who hadn’t anticipated the movement — and looked at me with wide eyes.“What are you doing?” he said softly.I enjoyed, briefly and privately, the shyness that was sitting all

I was the first one to class.I sat down in the quiet of the empty room and looked at the desk in front of me and thought about grapes and blue eyes and a corridor I had walked down very fast this morning, and then I thought about exams and graduation requirements and the semi-finals and all the various things that were now apparently happening at the same time, and by the time the room began filling around me I had successfully redirected myself into something resembling focus. And then Ken sat down beside me.Casually. Naturally. With the easy, unbothered energy of someone arriving at a seat they’ve always occupied, wearing a smile that had absolutely no business being that uncomplicated given the circumstances.I looked at him.He looked back. “What’s with the face, Noah? You look angry.”I stared at him for a moment. “You looked for me,” I said flatly. “To do what, exactly? Tell more people things I trusted you with?”The smile faltered. Something moved underneath it — not quite g

“Do you still hate me?”I groaned. “Kai. Let me eat my grapes in peace.”He cleared his throat. Then he did something I had not anticipated — he crouched down, slowly, until he was on his knees in front of me, and looked up at my face with his blue eyes open and entirely unguarded. My heart did something immediate and inconvenient.“Noah,” he said. “Will you be my friend?”I smiled before I could stop it.“I’ve been a jerk to you,” he continued. “I know that. And I’m sorry — genuinely. I want to be better. Kind. Patient. Enough to actually make this work — the friendship and the brotherhood.” He held my gaze. “Both.”I looked at him. The words had the quality of something that had been found somewhere real and brought out carefully. No performance in them. No angle.I reached out and touched his shoulder briefly. “It’s okay, Kai. We can be friends. Officially.”He smiled. The blue of his eyes, when he smiled, was something I was apparently now noticing. I filed that away in the catego

I walked out of the dorm still trying to understand what had just happened.Kai had asked me to be his friend.Kai. The same person who had made the first weeks of my time at this academy feel like a sustained exercise in surviving someone who had decided, on principle, to make everything harder. Who had pushed me, provoked me, switched off the lights to watch me fall apart, and said things I’d spent real energy recovering from. That Kai had sat in front of me with tears drying on his face and asked — quietly, genuinely, with all the armour temporarily gone — if we could be friends. My heart, completely against my permission, was very happy about it.I needed air. I walked until the cafeteria appeared and went in, and that was where Miller found me — arriving at my shoulder with the easy certainty of someone who has been looking.“Where have you been?” He nudged me as we sat down.“Around,” I said.He looked at my face with the focused, unhurried attention of someone who notices thing

The embarrassment arrived the moment the hug ended.I pulled back and straightened and looked at the wall and conducted a rapid, humourless review of the last ten minutes. I had cried. In front of Noah. My rival, my stepbrother, the person I had made a sustained project of being difficult toward since the moment we met. I had sat in front of him and come apart and he had held me while I did it.Objectively one of the more mortifying things that had ever happened to me.“It’s okay,” he said, before I could construct anything. “I’m not going to use it against you.”“I know you think I’m weak now,” I said. My voice had mostly come back to its usual register. Mostly. He looked at me with the expression he sometimes wore when he was about to say something that was going to be both sincere and slightly annoying. “Crying doesn’t make anyone weak. You’re not weak. You just needed to let something out.” A pause. “And maybe now that you have, you’ll stop being such a jerk to me.”He said it so

looked at him with a calm face but my mind was already working fast behind it.“During the game one of your teammates hurt my hand,” I said, trying to hide my fear . “I didn’t want to tell Coach Merritt. He would have benched me. So I’ve been using my left. My right hand is in pain.”Liam’s face d

POV: Ava CarterI did not even blink."It belongs to a girl I am seeing," I said.Kai looked at me for a long moment. The locker room was almost empty now. Just the two of us and the hum of the lights and the hair tie sitting in his open palm between us."A girl," he said."Yeah.""You are seeing a

I looked at the pictures again.“Are you sure?” I asked. I heard how it sounded but I couldn’t help it. “You’re absolutely sure that’s your brother?”Maya looked at me with patient eyes. “I know it’s strange. We left my father’s house when we were young. My mum took us and we never went back.” She
