POV: Silver Preston

The scoreboard does not lie.

Harvard 3. Yale 2.

The final buzzer barely finishes echoing through Ingalls before the silence takes over. The kind that drops on a crowd when the result is wrong and no one has figured out what to do with their hands yet. People sit frozen for a beat too long, as if stillness might somehow rewind the last sixty minutes.

Three thousand people going quiet at once is its own specific sound. It presses against the ribs more than any roar could.

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The truth is not what Weston told her

POV: Eli HayesSomething has been said about me. I don't know exactly what, or exactly who said it, but the distance Silver is putting between us today feels different from every version that came before it. It sits in the air between us like a wall nobody bothered to explain, and I hate that I can feel its presence without being able to name its shape.Different from the Sterling steps version, which was defensive and pointed, all sharp edges and quick retreats.Different from the hockey house version, which was hurt and angry and aimed straight at me, a wound I could at least see and try to address. This is something else entirely. This is the distance of someone who has been handed information and is trying to decide whether to believe it. I recognize it because I've stood on the other side of that particular silence before, back when I was the one deciding whether to trust what I'd been told about someone I cared about. It's a miserable place to stand, caught between loyalty and d

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance    Unreliable Narrators

POV: Silver PrestonAcademic torture has a new name.Professor Dawes announces the mid-semester comparative analysis pairings, and I stare at my annotated stack of Victorian Gothic texts like it personally engineered this outcome.Eli Hayes.Partner.The seminar room is the kind of Yale space that has absorbed decades of student anxiety into its walls. Chalk dust, old wood, and the particular cold seeping through Gothic windows installed long before anyone thought about insulation. Around us, other students settle into their assigned pairs, voices dropping to the productive murmur of people who can actually focus. I envy them, briefly and bitterly, before the feeling curdles into something closer to dread.I can't focus.Weston's voice is still running underneath everything, a current I can't shut off no matter how hard I try to drown it out with syllabus logistics and the dry comfort of required reading. It surfaces at the worst moments, filling the pauses I should be using to think,

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance    The Seed

POV: Silver PrestonThe walk to Chapel Street gives me just enough time to almost turn back. Twice.I don't.The bar Weston picked is exactly what I would've guessed, if I'd let myself guess. Exposed brick. Edison bulbs hung at precisely calibrated heights. That warm, low light that makes everyone look like they belong in a more interesting life than the one they're actually living. The whole place is built to make ordinary conversations feel important, and I hate that it's already working on me before I've even ordered a drink.Weston's at a corner table when I walk in, tucked into an alcove with a clear view of the whole room. Of course he picked that seat. He's dressed like the evening was arranged around his schedule instead of the other way around. He half rises when he sees me, a gesture so practiced it should feel hollow, but it lands anyway, and I catch the small, traitorous flicker of flattery before I can stomp it out.I sit across from him and order something with citrus th

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance    The Lamp Goes Off

POV: Silver PrestonThe latch clicks behind me. I lean against the door, letting my full weight settle into the wood for a moment, as if it might hold up more than just my body. In my left hand, the manila packet is thick, stamped in purple administrative ink from the Dean's Affairs Office. The sealed corner is still cold from the walk across Old Campus. On the front, my legal name sits opposite Weston's, filed barely forty minutes after we deposited Marina Volkov's clinic logs into the secure athletic board lockbox. The phantom sensation of his lips against my knuckles sits on my skin with the particular persistence of something designed to linger. Not affection. A performance for whoever was watching from the quad windows. A deliberate marker.I open my eyes.Americus is watching me from her bed.She sits cross-legged, her dark hair caught in a pencil-secured bun that looks one sharp movement from total collapse. Her arms are folded across her chest. Her expression is the organized

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   August

POV: Eli HayesI watch her shuttle pull away from the curb at four-oh-three.The May afternoon does what it does, warm and unhurried, the kind of day that does not have opinions about departures.I stand at the edge of the Branford entrance and watch the shuttle turn the corner onto Elm Street and disappear. Then I go back through the gate. The courtyard is empty in the late afternoon. The trees fully leafed. The security lamps not yet on, unnecessary in this light. The Gothic stone warm in a way it has not been since October.I walk to the center of the courtyard.I stop at the cobblestone. The one that sits slightly higher than its neighbors. The one she was looking at when she said I'm going to miss this specific cobblestone with the expression that belongs to the actual person and not the performance of the person.I look at it for a moment. The same stone. There is a version of this year in which I walked through a jet bridge at Bradley International and took a shuttle to campus

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   See You In August

Silver PrestonThe box of medals comes out from under the bed last.I have saved it deliberately.Everything else has been packed in the careful systematic way I approach things now, without the frantic energy of someone trying to outrun their own feelings. Textbooks boxed with the syllabi tucked inside them. The Yale hoodie, worn through at the right cuff, folded on top because it will go in my bag rather than a box. Thomas's letter in the inside pocket of my jacket where it has been since March.Americus has been packing in the way Americus does everything, which is dramatically and with significant sound effects and occasional musical accompaniment from her rhinestone speaker.Across the room, Riley is already mostly finished because Riley has been organized since the day she arrived and has maintained it through every circumstance including a snowstorm, a gala, and a semester that tested everyone's organizational systems in ways that had nothing to do with academics.I pull the b

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Cobblestones

POV: Silver PrestonUp close, Yale looms even larger than it did from the shuttle window. The Gothic spires press into the late afternoon sky, their shadows cutting long and dark across the courtyards below. I have competed in arenas built specifically to intimidate, designed with high ceilings and

POV: Silver PrestonThe question won't leave me.If I couldn't skate, who was I?It follows me through every MRI scan, every consultation with specialists who speak in careful, measured tones about torn ACLs and damaged meniscus tissue. It echoes through physical therapy sessions at the San Jose sp

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Who Are You Without the Ice

POV: Silver PrestonShe looks like she just stepped out of a board meeting.Perfectly pressed navy blazer without a wrinkle. Blonde hair pulled back in the same severe chignon she wore at the arena. Makeup completely intact despite however many hours she spent in a waiting room down the hall.Leona

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Diagnosis

POV: Silver PrestonThe world comes back in pieces.First, the sound.A steady electronic pulse that echoes from somewhere far away, then closer, then inside my skull.Beep. Beep. Beep. Each tone feels like a small hammer tapping against my consciousness, dragging me back from whatever dark place m
