Bella Reyes

I rolled out of my Honda Civic in front of the huge house and shut the door. This poor car was getting way too old and squeaky. I bought it with money I had saved up myself, knowing early on that I’d be completely on my own for college thanks to my irresponsible mom. Buying this beat-up little baby was the best decision I ever made.

Tyler was right. This place was massive and screamed money. An arrogant jerk could easily live here.

Then it hit me. I had completely forgotten to ask Tyler one crucial question.

Was the asshole even home?

How could I have forgotten that?

I pulled out my cracked phone to type out the question. It was a little late for that, but I sent it anyway. Thank goodness Tyler’s reply came back almost instantly.

“The asshole is probably at practice. Just go in and grab it. Thanks, babe. You're the best.”

A small smile spread across my lips, though the biting cold air quickly snapped me out of it.

Tyler had guessed right. The front door was completely unlocked. It must've be nice living in such a safe, wealthy neighborhood. It was eerily quiet, too.

Inside, the air smelled strange. It was a blend of rich scents that, instead of twisting my stomach, somehow relaxed me. It made me feel like I could easily curl up and fall asleep in the crisp, quiet space, as if it were my own sanctuary. But I had a mission to complete, and I needed to move.

It had to be the fancy central air and the atmosphere of elite wealth. When was the last time I had stepped foot into a place like this? I couldn't even remember.

I started moving through the house, my eyes scanning the couches and coffee tables. I spotted plenty of things tossed around, but no sign of a laptop anywhere.

My fingers tapped against my phone screen again.

“Remind me what your laptop looks like again.”

Tyler’s typing bubbles danced on the screen. I found myself sinking onto the couch, which was surprisingly plush and soft. For a split second, I actually entertained the silly thought of swapping it with mine, but that would be stealing, and I wasn't a thief.

My phone pinged with an image, refreshing my memory. If I had caught even a glimpse of it earlier, I would have recognized it right away. It was his usual laptop.

“I can't find it. Where exactly did you leave it?” I texted him.

I closed my eyes and breathed in the scent of the room. There was something about this place that made me just want to rest my head and call it a night.

Another ping.

“I don't remember. Where are you? Have you checked the rooms?” he added.

Was he out of his mind? Why would I wander into a stranger’s bedroom to search through his things?

I snapped a picture of the living room and sent it over.

“Maybe the asshole moved it,” Tyler replied.

“What if he tossed it or something? He clearly has the money to replace it,” I typed back.

“He wouldn't dare. Wait a sec, I'll text you.”

Yeah. Call him and ask him where he moved it, I thought silently, too groggy to even type it out. I shut my eyes, practically hallucinating, because there was no way I was actually hearing Tyler’s voice beside me right now.

When had he gotten here?

I blinked my eyes open slightly at the warm touch on my skin, but they fluttered shut again.

“Tyler…” I barely managed to breathe out.

“You smell so delicious,” a voice murmured. His breath fanned across my neck, and paired with the cold air already brushing over me, I instinctively reached up, pressing my hands into his hair to pull him closer.

That scent. “When did you get here?”

His lips grazed the side of my neck, and a quiet giggle slipped out of me. “Did you want to surprise me?”

The warmth of his skin flushed against mine as he shifted higher, his lips trailing up to the base of my jaw. His hot breath fanned over my mouth, letting me know just how close he was, that distinct scent overwhelming my senses again.

As my mind spun in a haze, he pressed his lips gently against mine. My eyes closed completely. The heat of his mouth deepened the kiss, sending a sudden jolt through me that made me pull back, breaking the contact.

“Wait, I'm sorry,” I laughed softly, feeling disoriented. “You smell different, and my head… I'm just…”

I pulled away from his lips, letting my head fall back against the couch cushions, when the loud ping of my phone jerked me back to reality.

My eyes shot open. The figure sitting right next to me, practically on top of me, made my jaw drop.

It wasn't my imagination. The kiss, the heat… it was real.

I touched my fingers to my swollen lips. “Who the hell are you?”

“Shh, no cussing, freak.”

Freak? My brows pulled together in confusion. I scrambled backward, grabbing my phone off the cushion to look at the screen.

It was a text from Tyler: “Seen it, babe?”

My heart began pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. What had I just done?

“Don't call me that,” I said, scrambling to my feet. I quickly pulled down my shirt and wiped at my neck, panic rising in my throat.

What on earth had I just done?

The stranger looked up at me, his eyes dark and unreadable. “You're Tyler’s girl, aren't you?”

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady. “Yes, of course. Why?” I demanded, trying to sound braver than I felt. “I came to get his laptop. And who are you?”

“Aries.” He smirked, looking entirely unbothered. “The owner of the house you just broke into. Nice to meet you, burglar.” He extended his hand for a handshake.

I ignored his hand, casting a quick glance around the massive room before fixing my gaze back on his face. No wonder he had gotten into a fight with Tyler. He was insufferably arrogant.

“Well, I'm not a burglar, and you already know who I am. Tyler sent me here to grab his laptop.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “Where is it?”

“A laptop, huh?” He let out a dark, mocking laugh. “Or maybe he sold you for some…” He rubbed his thumb and index finger together. “…for some quick cash.”

“What? No.” I shook my head, stepping back.

“Oh, sweet girl. You really don't believe me?” He tilted his head, his silver-gray eyes glinting with a dangerous edge. “Wanna see for yourself?”

My chest tightened as I stared at him. What was he saying? Tyler loved me. He would never do something like that to me.

10Bella ReyesRunning was not going to save me now. I knew he would catch up, but I attempted it anyway. Aries Hadid was a hockey player. Running and hitting were practically his day job, something he breathed like air, so it wasn't surprising how quickly he towered over me from behind.“Bella, wait!” His hand clamped around my wrist so tight that I just wanted to slump to the floor in pure exhaustion.Or better yet, have the ground open up and swallow me whole. He held me tightly, and when I tried to force a few more steps forward, he loosened his grip slightly, allowing me to walk, but still refusing to let me go.“Please, listen to me,” he panted, his breath ragged. “You have to listen to me, okay?”My own breath came in choppy gasps that heaved my chest. I could barely see where I was going, just walking blindly down the corridor. Why had he fucking announced something like that to the entire student body of Terraria University? Couldn't he have just walked past? Couldn't he have

09Bella ReyesIt was stupid of me to think I could escape him that easily. “Bella, please wait!”I sidestepped students, almost breaking into a full run. I was so focused on getting away that I didn't realize how fast he was gaining on me until he grabbed me by my shirt, bringing all my movement to a sudden stop.“Bella, please.”“Please what?” I whipped my head around so fast my vision shattered into a dizzying spell. The muscles in my arms gave out, causing my bag to slip from my hands and hit the ground. My vision cleared just as Tyler dropped to his knees to pick up my scattered things.Standing up, he held my bag out to me. I hesitated to take it, wishing with everything inside me that he would just go to hell and never come back.“Are you okay?” His voice sounded soft and full of concern, and the absolute absurdity of it made me want to laugh.“I'm fine,” I said coldly, snatching my bag from his hands and clutching it tight against my chest as I turned on my heel.“No, Bella, p

08Bella ReyesI didn't deserve to live backed into a corner like this. I hadn't offended anyone. I hadn't done anything wrong in my life to be backed into a corner like a piece of garbage. That was the single thought that forced me out of bed this morning. It held me together just enough to take a shower and actually show up for class, after rotting away in my dorm room like a piece of furniture for weeks, without speaking a word to anyone.I was sick. Physically, and in my head. But mostly in my head for letting Aries use me so easily like that. Even though weeks had passed, it still didn't feel any less demeaning or damaging.Every time I opened my eyes to a new day, a morning that used to feel bright and full of hope, I was met with a vile, sickening knot in the pit of my stomach. My new routine consisted of throwing up the contents of my stomach, then scrubbing my skin in the shower as if I needed to scrape off an entire layer of myself. The fact that I had completely ruined my l

07Bella ReyesAgainst my own judgment, I nodded.“Oh, Bella.” The low raspy way he said my name sent a wave of liquid heat rushing straight down between my thighs. “You shouldn't. You're far too gorgeous to be crying over someone like him.”“Aries?” I asked softly, my voice barely working as I tried to regain my footing. “Why are you here?”“For you, Bella. I came here for you.”My eyes snapped open. “No, you can't be. Please, you need to leave.” I tried to spring off his lap, but his thick arm wrapped around my waist, yanking me back down against him. This time, my back was flushed completely against his broad chest, and my ass was pressed so tight into his groin that I could feel the thick, heavy outline of his length nestled right in the curve of my cheeks.A mixture of ice and fire sent a shiver down my spine. His fingers pinned my jaw, firm yet surprisingly tender, turning my face toward his until his hot breath fanned over my lips. “Aries...”“Fuck, the way you say my name dri

06Bella Reyes“You wouldn't, Rhea.” I shook my head, feeling pathetically weak.“Oh, I fucking would. Who do you think you are?”“No, Rhea. You can't. Please. This is my future on the line.”“Go fuck yourself and your future. I don't give a damn. You really thought you could have Tyler? That I was just going to let you?” She scoffed, letting out a cruel laugh. “Now look at your pathetic self.” She gestured toward me like I was a piece of trash. “Like I said, if you beg nicely, I'll leave your name out of it so people have to guess. Isn't that generous of me?” She smirked, turning her eyes toward Tyler. “Right, baby?”Baby? I could barely process the insult before the sting of that word cut straight through me.I watched in total disbelief as Tyler agreed. “Right.”Rhea gave a confident giggle, locking her eyes back onto mine. “See? I'm so generous.”There was no way I was going to beg her. I couldn't take the bait. I knew Rhea too well. She would pull out her phone, record me on came

05Bella ReyesI slammed open the door to my dorm room, not caring if I broke the hinges, my eyes frantically searching the space. Tyler wasn't there.Fuck. I was going crazy. God help him if any of this turned out to be true. I had seen the transaction receipt and the message thread, but my brain still couldn't fully process it.Tyler wasn't capable of doing something so cruel to me. It had to be fabricated. For all I knew, Tyler and Aries had bad blood, and this was just a twisted scheme to ruin him.Tyler loved me. We loved each other. There was absolutely nothing Aries could throw at us that would tear us apart. My rushed steps faltered right outside the door to Tyler's room as laughter drifted into the hallway. But that could be anyone. It could be his roommate hanging out with his girlfriend. It could be anyone, and I was stepping way over the line.If this all turned out to be a mind game orchestrated by Aries, I would still have to face Tyler's anger for doubting him. But I ne
