Chapter 1

Author: Goodtale
My parents had never been anywhere in their lives. The second they heard I was taking them on a trip, they had their bags packed a whole week in advance.

Mom went into town to get her hair dyed, while Dad went around telling everyone he knew, grinning the whole time.

On the morning of the first day of the long holiday, Amelia Hurst and I drove over to pick them up. They were already sitting out front in brand-new clothes, waiting for us.

But once we reached town, Amelia first pulled into a gas station and spent 20 whole minutes fueling up. Then she grabbed a rag and started wiping the windshield at a snail's pace.

A sinking feeling hit me, and I couldn't help speaking up. "We can wipe it when we get back. Let's just get going."

Amelia's expression darkened. She was clearly annoyed.

"The whole front of the car is covered in bugs after driving on the highway. You didn't pay for this car, so of course you don't care."

My parents tugged at my arm, so I bit my tongue and said nothing else. An hour later, she finally put the rag down.

But then she headed straight into the restroom and spent another half hour in there.

Just when I thought she was finally done, she went into the convenience store. She spent 20 minutes buying a single bottle of water.

By this point, my parents had awkward looks on their faces. They asked me hesitantly, "Is Amy upset because we brought too many things with us? We've never traveled before, so we don't really know what's appropriate…"

I was so frustrated I couldn't take it anymore. I got out and practically dragged Amelia back in. When she finally started the engine, I breathed a sigh of relief.

Smiling, I turned to my parents. "Buckle up. It's going to be a three-hour drive."

What I didn't expect was for the car to swing right around and stop at the Pac Burger next door.

Amelia went in and ordered a meal for two, which consisted of two burgers, two sodas, and an order of fries.

She plopped it down in front of my parents. "You can't have fun on an empty stomach, so do eat first."

My parents hurriedly picked up the burgers and took a bite. "This is pretty good. Amy, you really know how to pick a spot."

"Yeah, this is really tasty."

Amelia kept her head down, playing on her phone without responding. I dug my nails into my palms, not daring to rush her.

I was afraid she'd suddenly lose her temper, throw a fit, and refuse to take us anywhere.

Once my parents ate every last bite, Amelia glanced over, then went right back to scrolling through short videos. "Give the food some time to settle. Being too full before a drive isn't good for you."

Somehow, that little break lasted until 4:00 pm. She finally put her phone away and headed back to the car. "It's pretty late now. We'll go tomorrow."

The next day, she didn't get up until noon. We drove around town for a bit, only to end up parked outside Pac Burger again.

I stared at the sign, my fists clenching hard. Amelia ordered the meal for two again. This time, she added two pieces of fried chicken on top.

"You guys were practically fighting over the food yesterday, so I ordered some fried chicken as well. Dig in."

My parents felt so awkward that they didn't even know what to do with themselves.

I couldn't take it anymore.

In the spring of the second year after my divorce, I got promoted to department head. My salary went from 13,000 dollars to 22,000 dollars a month. When HR handed me the new contract, I read it three times. Going from 13,000 dollars to 22,000 dollars meant a 9,000-dollar raise—and 9,000 dollars was a big deal to me.That was close to what I'd needed when my mom was in the hospital, when I couldn't pay and had to borrow 10,000 dollars from a coworker. It was more than what I'd been missing when my dad turned 60, and all I could give him was a cake. It was enough to buy two of the coats I'd wanted last year but couldn't bring myself to splurge on.I moved out of my rental and bought a small apartment near work that had two bedrooms and a living room.I went alone to sign the contract. When the agent asked whose name to put on it, I answered, "Mine."I handed over my ID, and when my pen touched the paper, my hand didn't shake one bit. After signing the contract, I sat alone in

I ignored Julie. The next day, security talked her into leaving. On the third day, she was waiting for me at the entrance to my apartment building.I saw her as soon as I stepped outside. She looked a lot older than she had a month ago. Her hair had turned mostly gray, her back was hunched, and that cashmere sweater of hers was pilling."Kenneth."The way she said my name was so gentle that I barely recognized her voice. "I just want to have a word with you.""Ma'am, if you have something to say, do it here."She froze for a moment. I'd called her by her name for five years, after all.Julie tried a different approach. "Kenny, I know I haven't treated you well in the past. You and Amelia should get back together."I said nothing in response."Amelia knows she messed up. She's been bringing her own lunch to work every day and has lost over 15 pounds. Come back, and you can still have the final say in the family."I've accepted your parents, too. From now on, whenever they visit

The divorce went through faster than I'd expected. We had no children, and I bought the house before we got married, so it wasn't subject to division. There was exactly 573,000 dollars in the account. 286,500 dollars went to her, and the rest was mine.My lawyer asked if I wanted to fight for more. He said that since I'd covered almost all the household expenses for five years, I'd have a solid case for claiming a larger share.I told him there was no need and to just split the money down the middle. My lawyer was a man in his 40s. When he heard that, he took off his glasses and studied me for a moment."I've handled a lot of these cases. By this point, most people would want to get as much as they can. So why don't you want to?"I told him I wanted a clean break. "Every extra cent I try to get from her means one more reason to stay tangled up with her. I don't want anything to do with her anymore."He nodded and put his glasses back on. "Alright. Then we'll keep things as clean

Amelia stood there frozen for three seconds, and in those three seconds, a lot ran through my mind. I thought about everything I'd been through over the past five years. She laughed all of a sudden. "Divorce?""Yes."She pointed at me, her finger trembling. "Kenneth Chambers, you took my money, threw out my stuff, forced my parents to stay in a hotel, and now you want a divorce?""That's right.""Who the hell do you think you are?" she shouted, and every head in the lobby turned.I simply stared at her calmly. She took two steps toward me, getting right up in my face."When I married you, what did your family have? You were a country bumpkin whose family lived in a shack. And how much did your parents even make in a whole year? I did you a favor by marrying you!"Staring at her, I said, "You're right. My family lives in the countryside. But my parents have never spent a single cent of your money."As for when your mother needed to be hospitalized, I was the one who put down th

I didn't call or text back. I just spent the three final days of the long holiday in Koroville. After checking out the beach on day one, we visited the pier on day two. On the third day, I dragged my mom to the mall and bought her two complete sets of new clothes. While trying on clothes, Mom kept checking the price tags. "Kenneth, this is way too expensive.""Just wear them, Mom."She stood in front of the mirror in her new clothes for a long time. The woman in the mirror stood with her back straight. Dad was smoking outside. When he saw Mom come out, he froze for a moment."Wow."That was all he said. Mom blushed and gave him a playful smack. On the morning of the fourth day, we planned to take the subway to the train station. It was Mom's first time on the subway. When the gates swung open, she didn't dare walk through, so I took her hand and showed her how to tap her card.On the escalator, she gripped the handrail with both hands for dear life. "How does this stairca

I didn't reply, simply letting my phone buzz on the table all night long.Amelia's messages kept coming in. "What is the meaning of this, Kenneth Chambers? My parents have been stuck waiting at the airport for three hours.""You took my money! Don't think you can just run off with it. If you don't give the money back, I'll make sure you can't keep your job."The last message came in at 2:00 am. "Kenneth, don't force my hand."I flipped my phone screen-side down and went to take a shower.By the time I came out, it was almost dawn. I went over every moment of the past five years in my head. When I was done, I opened the closet.Amelia's clothes took up two-thirds of the space. Her clothes hung by color, her dresses were tucked in garment bags, and her heels were lined up in pairs on the shelves.I'd bought every last one of them with money I'd saved up.I took all the clothes down one piece at a time, folded them, and packed them into cardboard boxes. Even more stuff was i
