*Tessa*

I hear the ringing in my head, so loud that I am sure it will live with me for months. Knox acts fast, pulling me with him. I try to turn around, searching for my friends, but he doesn’t give me the liberty as he keeps moving farther away from the sound.

At the end of the hallway, he stops and pushes me behind his body. A gun appears in his hands. “The attacker is shooting from the parking lot,” he explains. “You are safe here, unless there is more than one of them.”

Fear works its way through me. "What happens if there is more than one?"

He shrugs. “You pray you don’t die yet.”

"Knox," I whisper. "My brother pays you to guard me, and that includes keeping me from death."

He gives me a look. “So, now you are willing to recognize that.”

Another bullet rings through the air, and I flinch. "My friends, Wes…"

"Your little boyfriend is going to be fine," he says a little too harshly. "I don't want you going out looking for him. Stay put until you are absolutely certain it is all right to come out. Are we clear?"

“But Knox…”

“Are we clear?”

“Yes.”

“Perfect.” He touches my chin lightly before racing towards the direction of the shooter, leaving me trembling, partially from fright and partially from the absolutely platonic touch of my chin.

But I still feel his fingers there minutes after he leaves, tingling me despite the situation.

The gunshots get louder and more insistent, and I slide to the floor, covering my ears with my hands. I hear a loud groan, and my heart squeezes. I hope it isn't someone I know. It can't be someone I know.

After what feels like an eternity, the ringing in the air stops. With a whimper escaping my lips, I pull myself to my feet and gaze around warily. Knox asked me not to come out until I am entirely certain it is safe to, so I linger a few more minutes before stepping out.

A crowd has gathered in the parking lot around something, and I find myself running in that direction, dread finding its way through me. I push my way through the crowd until I am at the front of the circle.

There, I see Knox on top of a man, pinning him to the ground. The man looks like he has a bullet wound on his calf, as he is bleeding from that point. His gun has been knocked out of his hands, and everyone is staring at Knox like a hero.

The cops arrive on the scene, and the crowd pushes back to let them through. Knox gets on his feet and leaves the man with them, taking the faces of those around him. And when our eyes meet, he heads in my direction.

“You good?”

I nod, unable to find my voice.

“The school has cancelled all classes for the day. Let’s get you home.”

“I have to find Wes and Marin first,” I whisper, still not recovered from the incident.

“The man didn’t come for your friends. He came for you.”

“What?”

"Marcus will get a lot of enemies naturally since the position he is running for is quite coveted. It is the reason you cannot run away as you please, Tessa. He only came in here because the instructions left him no choice. He was supposed to make the attack look like a random school shooting."

It is hard to wrap my head around it. Nodding slowly, I allow him to lead me to the car. The cops stop him for a few minutes to talk to him while I continue to the car. For the first time in a while, I do not feel like running away.

Seated in the back seat, Marin walks over to me. "Oh my God! Thank God!" she gushes, pulling me into her arms. "I looked everywhere for you. I just found your hot bodyguard, and he told me where you were."

“Can you stop calling him that?”

“But he is hot,” she maintains, eyeing him from the window. “I am just so glad that he was here on time to save everyone, because I don’t know what would have happened if someone had gotten hurt.”

“Me too,” I sigh. “What about Wes? I haven’t seen him anywhere.”

“Fucking coward,” Marin mutters. “He ran off the minute the shooting started. The fucker didn’t even bother checking on either of us. You see what I have been telling you for ages? Wes isn’t in love with you. He only likes the idea of you. Break up with him.”

I shake my head insistently. “Just because he ran away doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me. Maybe he just panicked.”

“What if your hot bodyguard had panicked too?”

I roll my eyes at her choice of words again, but refrain from talking about it. "That is different. It is his job to protect me, and that was what he did today."

“Whatever you say, honey,” she murmurs. “Scoot over. The handsome hunk has allowed me to hitch a ride with you guys today. My driver isn’t picking up his calls.”

“So we are dropping you off?” I ask as I move inside.

"No," she answers. "I am going home with you. My driver will come to get me later in the evening. You need someone to talk to after what happened today, and I think I need that too."

We wait a few more minutes for Knox before he appears around the corner, dark shades shielding his eyes. I find myself swallowing just as my best friend's mouth hangs open.

"He is one sexy Greek god," she whispers beside me, not bothering to hide her drool. "The things I have imagined him doing to me already."

“Ladies, are we set to go?” he asks as he gets into the car.

“We are,” Marin chirps with an unfounded excitement. Nodding, Knox pulls out of the parking lot and heads in the direction of our house.

His phone rings halfway into the journey, and he taps on the receiver attached to his ear.

“K.”

I cannot hear the person on the other side, but I am certain that his expression falters.

“Okay,” he says. “I will be right there.”

*Tessa*I strongly detest how Marin responded to Wes, but I say nothing about it. Wes moves closer to me and asks, “Are you fine?” I force a smile and nod. “Yes, I am.”He smiles immediately like he didn't really care about whether I'm deeply fine or faking it. “Great! Finally, we can leave for our hangout. I saw your bodyguard at the car park. He was standing in front of the car, waiting for you.” Wes laughs. “He has a name, Wes,” I say sluggishly. I did not like how he kept referring to Knox as my bodyguard. It just feels as though Wes intentionally says that to belittle Knox. It's not like he's a mere bodyguard, so it just sounds very wrong that Wes doesn't accord him any respect when referring to him.“Yeah, yeah,” Wes says, dismissing my words again. “I have the perfect plan.” He adds mischievously. I watch as he excitedly explains all that he has in mind for us to do, just so Knox will miss the opportunity of knowing when we leave the school premises. “There’s actually th

*Tessa*For some odd reason, everyone seems to be smiling at me as I walk into the class, Wes. All asides, Marin.Certainly, I don't expect Marin to be happy with what she is seeing but I didn't have a choice, and Wes is still my boyfriend because Knox won't even let me break up with Wes for him.“What's going on? Is it just me, or why do I feel like everyone is staring at us and smiling oddly?” I whisper to Wes. Wes smiles widely before stopping in the middle of the class and saying loudly, “Hello everyone, listen up.”I feel so uncomfortable watching him do that because I was not expecting him to do anything like that. “I'd like to use this medium to appreciate my girlfriend, the only woman I will ever wish to have my kids with, a wise and very funny lady. She has always been the woman of my dreams, and I'm sure she will continue to be mine.” Wes smiles widely at me, pulling me to the centre of the classroom where he stands. I feel so embarrassed at this point, but I just remain

Tessa's POVI get out of my room to check through the stair railings. I find Wes standing downstairs fully dressed in his uniform.“Wes, why are you here this early?”“How come none of you in this house is awake by this time?” Wes responds, surprised. I know for sure that Knox is up. He probably didn't want to wake me up to go to school. Perhaps he doesn't want me to see Wes just yet. “Well, you've done your best to wake us all up.”“That's because I'm picking you up today, and I will be taking you to school today.”It doesn't sit well with me, knowing Knox will never agree to allowing Wes to take me to school.“Would you like Knox to drive us to school in your car, or where exactly would you like to fix Knox into?”“Of course not. Just get dressed for school first. I know what I'm doing. You have ten minutes and please don't take longer than that.” Wes says and walks off without letting me speak back to him.I grumble before going into my room to have my bath. I don't want to have

Tessa’s POVKnox's silence doesn't feel so good to me. Even though he was the one who asked me to call Wes. I am not so sure he really wants me to have the conversation we were having because of the plain look on his face. Knox smiles softly and nods as I look into his eyes, hoping to read either approval or disapproval on his face so I can know the right response to give to Wes. I didn't want to go anyway, so it wouldn't be an issue if he said I should not. In fact, I'd be happy to know he doesn't want me to go because that would mean he's more interested in me as well. “Tess, let me worry! I wish to see you. I don't even know what it's like to have you with me anymore. I barely see you in school since all that has happened, so I don't even get to spy on your pretty face. I miss you so much, Tess. I miss us.” Wes says plainly. He speaks with so much depth, and I miss that part of him for a moment, but it didn't have the effect like it used to.Knox keeps his smile and nods continu

Knox's POV I think about the request I put to Tessa indirectly, knowing fully well that she could get in a lot of trouble if Marcus finds out that she ever tried to take something from him without his permission. Talk more about a document like that. And I couldn't even trust Tessa with such a task. She's a little too delicate for that. I look at her, smiling with my eyes. “You don't have to worry about it. Whenever I need your help concerning such, I'd let you know. .“Are you sure? I know you might think it's risky for me to do such a thing! I love playing games with Marcus and doing all secret things with him. You can trust me that he will never find out. He just seems like he has a lot of things under his hands. He actually doesn't.”Tessa says plainly. It feels as though she knows the implications of what I might be asking her to do and she's ready to be more of a team with me. I smile widely at her before saying, “It's fine, Tess. I still don't want you to worry about any of

*Knox*I still can't wrap my head around the new ways Kara is behaving. “What do you mean by I sound like a female? K? Do you know how disrespectful that statement is to me? What has really come over you?” I begin to take offense at how she is speaking to me. “Do you know how sad it is for me to feel like you've become so distant and so misunderstood and still having no option but to choose to remain still like nothing is going wrong right under my nose? Do you know how disheartening it is for me?”“I don't want to know. You made your choices yourself and these are the repercussions of the choices you made. Why should I be burdened by how you feel also?” Kara snaps back at me.I know I have done many things and taken up initiatives by myself, without involving her. Knowing fully well that she doesn't like that. But I don't think I've done anything that contradicts the goal that we have set together. “Why have you become this bitter?” I ask Kara. Genuinely hoping I can understand the
