MasukI never wanted a bodyguard. Especially not Knox Pierce. Cold, dangerous, and too sexy for his own good. He waltzes into my colourful life like a drab of black, controlling my every move. I hate how much I want him. I hate how much he makes me want him. But Knox isn't here to protect me. He is here with a secret, and when I find out the truth, I realize that I am the pawn in a game that has no end.

The message I have been waiting for all night comes in. “I just arrived at the location. You have roughly twenty minutes to be here before the doors close. Please try to make it this time.” And then, another one enters. “I love you.” Marin peers at my phone from over my shoulders. "You should stop grinning so wide if you want your bodyguards to suspect your intentions." The smile on my face dies immediately as my eyes scan the room, searching for them. The first one is standing by the door, dressed in a dark suit that stands out so annoyingly in the loud club. Even the neon lights bouncing all around do nothing to change its colours. “She looks so serious,” Marin mutters, rolling her eyes. “Do you think she is as dumb as she looks?” I giggle under my breath. “Shall we find out?” Marin nods eagerly, falling into step with me as we sneak out through the side doors of the club. The doormen outside give me a look, but I tip them enough to let me off just this once. Clutching onto my best friend’s hands, we stay glued to the wall, our breaths raging all around us and our knees bent how. We don’t stop until we reach the stairs by the side of the building. But rather than go up, we hide underneath it, finally letting our laughter out. “That was fun,” Marin breaths, holding on to her chest like we just ran a marathon. “Remember the last time we did this and your brother fired every one of them? Do you think that will happen a second time?” “I hope it does,” I reply, pulling down my dress to reveal just the right amount of cleavage. “And this time, I hope he doesn’t hire any more. I’m tired of them following me around like I am some President’s daughter.” “You might as well be on the path to that,” Marin reminds me. “If your brother wins the elections, he isn’t going to stop at the Senate level. None of them do.” I groan loudly just as a shuffle of footsteps halts in front of us. A frustrated sigh follows next. Marin and I hold our breaths. The next few minutes will determine whether we make it out of here undetected. “Shit! I can’t believe you lost her again!” The leader of the security detail that protects me yells to the rest of them. They are ten in number. Ten. Who do they think I am? "I'm sorry, Sir," the lady blurts. I would have felt sorry for her if she didn't scowl at me each time I asked to be left alone. "She was right on the dance floor with her friend and then, suddenly…" “All your excuses won’t matter if something happens to her!” he snaps. “Find the kid and take her home.” Instructions are belted out, and footsteps follow until I cannot hear any of them. “Do you think it’s safe to go out now?” I whisper, turning to look at Marin. “All we have to do is make it out to the streets and flag a taxi. By the time they notice us, it will be too late.” "Okay," I say, excitement coursing through me. Wes, my boyfriend, has been waiting for us in the second location. Marcus has no idea he exists, and honestly, I prefer it that way. God forbid the boy gets scrutinized a million times because he's my boyfriend. “On the count of three,” Marin mutters, taking my hand. “One, two, three!” We don't see him coming. One minute, we are bolting down the road to flag down a taxi, and the next, I am slamming into a brick wall. "Hey, pretty girl," he sneers, a sick smile on his face. His friends are not far behind, flanking him like a pack of wolves. Marin stays glued to my side, her eyes jerking all around. “Where do you think you are headed?” "Don't touch me," I warn in a low tone. "My security detail is just around the corner. If you mess with me, I promise that it will be the last thing you do in a while." “Oh!” He mock-trembles, wrapping his arms around his face. “I’m so scared. Please tell your security detail to go easy on me.” “They are big and scary, you know?” Marin mutters weakly, conveniently pushing herself behind me. “Right.” The man looks around pointedly. “So, where are they?” He takes a slow step forward, and I take a corresponding one away from him. He smells of liquor and smoke in large amounts, and his eyes look unfocused. My gaze darts from where I am to the road, gauging how long I have to run and what my chances are. Where are those bloody security details when I need them? The man keeps walking until my back hits the wall. He presses his face towards mine, and I look away at once, shutting my eyes so tight and praying for a miracle that I have never believed in until tonight. Marin's gasp echoes through the night, and next, I hear something slam into another body, hard and fast. My eyes crack open slightly just in time to catch the man standing in front of me drop to the ground with a thud. The other men back off at once, but the other men in suits come out of nowhere, a minute too late. The man who attacked the one who was going to harass me takes a step closer, planting his imposing self in front of me. The first thing I notice is his brown eyes, devoid of light and life. They seem to suck into my very existence, causing me to remain rooted to the spot. I open my mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. Not even a whisper. The stranger sweeps my feet off the ground abruptly without a word and stalks in the direction of a jeep waiting on the curb. And the scary part? None of the other guards bats an eyelid. “What the fuck is this?” I scream, my tongue finally working. “Let me go!” But he doesn’t budge, his feet hitting the terrace in a rhythm until he reaches the jeep and pulls the door open. “What are you all doing?” I yell at the other security detail. “This man is kidnapping me. Marin? What the hell!” They all stare at me in silence, with an indecipherable expression behind their eyes. He pushes me into the back seat and holds on to my face firmly, forcing me to look into his eyes. “Your brother might think you are cute, but I don’t. So, if you don’t want to get tossed out of a moving vehicle, shut the fuck up.”*Tessa*For some odd reason, everyone seems to be smiling at me as I walk into the class, Wes. All asides, Marin.Certainly, I don't expect Marin to be happy with what she is seeing but I didn't have a choice, and Wes is still my boyfriend because Knox won't even let me break up with Wes for him.“What's going on? Is it just me, or why do I feel like everyone is staring at us and smiling oddly?” I whisper to Wes. Wes smiles widely before stopping in the middle of the class and saying loudly, “Hello everyone, listen up.”I feel so uncomfortable watching him do that because I was not expecting him to do anything like that. “I'd like to use this medium to appreciate my girlfriend, the only woman I will ever wish to have my kids with, a wise and very funny lady. She has always been the woman of my dreams, and I'm sure she will continue to be mine.” Wes smiles widely at me, pulling me to the centre of the classroom where he stands. I feel so embarrassed at this point, but I just remain
Tessa's POVI get out of my room to check through the stair railings. I find Wes standing downstairs fully dressed in his uniform.“Wes, why are you here this early?”“How come none of you in this house is awake by this time?” Wes responds, surprised. I know for sure that Knox is up. He probably didn't want to wake me up to go to school. Perhaps he doesn't want me to see Wes just yet. “Well, you've done your best to wake us all up.”“That's because I'm picking you up today, and I will be taking you to school today.”It doesn't sit well with me, knowing Knox will never agree to allowing Wes to take me to school.“Would you like Knox to drive us to school in your car, or where exactly would you like to fix Knox into?”“Of course not. Just get dressed for school first. I know what I'm doing. You have ten minutes and please don't take longer than that.” Wes says and walks off without letting me speak back to him.I grumble before going into my room to have my bath. I don't want to have
Tessa’s POVKnox's silence doesn't feel so good to me. Even though he was the one who asked me to call Wes. I am not so sure he really wants me to have the conversation we were having because of the plain look on his face. Knox smiles softly and nods as I look into his eyes, hoping to read either approval or disapproval on his face so I can know the right response to give to Wes. I didn't want to go anyway, so it wouldn't be an issue if he said I should not. In fact, I'd be happy to know he doesn't want me to go because that would mean he's more interested in me as well. “Tess, let me worry! I wish to see you. I don't even know what it's like to have you with me anymore. I barely see you in school since all that has happened, so I don't even get to spy on your pretty face. I miss you so much, Tess. I miss us.” Wes says plainly. He speaks with so much depth, and I miss that part of him for a moment, but it didn't have the effect like it used to.Knox keeps his smile and nods continu
Knox's POV I think about the request I put to Tessa indirectly, knowing fully well that she could get in a lot of trouble if Marcus finds out that she ever tried to take something from him without his permission. Talk more about a document like that. And I couldn't even trust Tessa with such a task. She's a little too delicate for that. I look at her, smiling with my eyes. “You don't have to worry about it. Whenever I need your help concerning such, I'd let you know. .“Are you sure? I know you might think it's risky for me to do such a thing! I love playing games with Marcus and doing all secret things with him. You can trust me that he will never find out. He just seems like he has a lot of things under his hands. He actually doesn't.”Tessa says plainly. It feels as though she knows the implications of what I might be asking her to do and she's ready to be more of a team with me. I smile widely at her before saying, “It's fine, Tess. I still don't want you to worry about any of
*Knox*I still can't wrap my head around the new ways Kara is behaving. “What do you mean by I sound like a female? K? Do you know how disrespectful that statement is to me? What has really come over you?” I begin to take offense at how she is speaking to me. “Do you know how sad it is for me to feel like you've become so distant and so misunderstood and still having no option but to choose to remain still like nothing is going wrong right under my nose? Do you know how disheartening it is for me?”“I don't want to know. You made your choices yourself and these are the repercussions of the choices you made. Why should I be burdened by how you feel also?” Kara snaps back at me.I know I have done many things and taken up initiatives by myself, without involving her. Knowing fully well that she doesn't like that. But I don't think I've done anything that contradicts the goal that we have set together. “Why have you become this bitter?” I ask Kara. Genuinely hoping I can understand the
*Knox*Tessa finally gives in. I could feel it deeply as she rested on me and swelled. I hold her tight. I feel terrible watching her act so vulnerable. Despite knowing it isn't the right time to make her feel like I care so much about her, I couldn't help but hold her so tight, like I'd never let go. “You don't have to be bothered by anything. I'd be here with you, and that's me giving you my word.” “What about your girlfriend? Would you be there for? Her too? I see pain in her eyes when she looks at me like I'm just a small girl trying to take her man away from her. I really don't want problems as much as I don't want to lose you to anyone.” Tessa says, her head still pressed into my chest as she speaks. “K isn't my girlfriend. Just like I'm not saying this because we are in a relationship.” I hold Tessa up so I could look her in the face, “Tessa, you know I can't be in a relationship with you, right? It's dangerous for both of us, and Marcus will never accept such between us.
