*Knox*

Kara’s call changes the plan for me to drive Tessa and Marin home because I can't let Tessa leave my sight for a moment.

I drive both of them to an open field, where Kara and I are to meet. I ensure to stop in a space open enough for me to keep a close eye on the girls while they stay in the car.

“I'd be back in no time,” I say before getting out of the car.

Kara stands ahead in a black body suit. Her wavy hair was packed up in a bun, making her tall posture look alluring.

“Gosh, that lady is beautiful!” Marin exclaims as I get down from the car.

I hear whispers from both of them as they discuss her. They could see her but she couldn't see them. Despite being unable to see them, she glared at the car like she was up for a fight.

“Here's the document of what you asked. There's nothing much about his family. They are stupid rich and are breeds of generational wealth. The rest is in the file.” Kara hands the file to me, but something is still off about her.

“This can't be why you called me to come,” I ask as I slowly take the file from her hand, with my gaze fixed on I notice dull looks on her face.

“Davis died.”

David is one of the trusted ex-military friends we had on our team of pulling down evil senior officers.

I had not seen him in a while, as he was away on a mission to hunt down the man who labelled him for a crime he didn't commit, also got him imprisoned and eventually removed him from the military.

“How did this happen?”

Kara use her hand to brush over her hair from front to back, letting down her bun by mistake.

“That fucker got to him first.” She groans.

This is a really sad thing to note, and I know how this must feel to everyone in the team.

It saddens me more because I know how much my presence with the team will strengthen everyone in a time like this, but I've been away being a bodyguard to Tessa and I can't see them anytime soon.

“That's why I need you to remember why you're here. I feel strongly that you're getting carried away and being too protective of this girl. I'm sure she's inside the damn car right now!” She growls, panting back and forth.

“This has nothing to do with Tessa. Don't worry about me, I'm still on track.”

“I don't think you see it, that's the problem. You're securing her too much, and if you are making her too secure, you're also doing so indirectly for Marcus!”

What Kara said was true about caring for Marcus indirectly, and I know it. But I don't think now is the time to let anything happen to Tessa. I need to gain her trust to get access to Marcus the way I need. I can't just loose sight and behave irrationally because of my emotions.

“I have this under control,” I say firmly.

“Are we still going because I'm hungry?”

I didn't know when Tessa stepped out of the car. Her voice catches our attention, and Kara turns away from her direction so she won't have a clearer look at her face.

“I need to leave now. I'd see you some other time.” I say to Kara. I know she wasn't satisfied by the fact that Tessa interrupts our opportunity to spend time discussing in person like we used to.

She turns and takes a much closer look at Tessa, who didn't go inside.

Her green eyes look closely, as though she could scan through her inner self.

“I'm sure this girl will bring you so many problems. I can see it all over her.” She says in an irritable way.

It's clear Kara cannot like Tessa. I don't know why anyway. But I know if she gets to know her a little more, she might as well just see that she's a soft girl who can cause no harm.

I know the thought can't be the same for Kara so I don't bother pushing.

“A minute,” I yell back to Tessa. Otherwise, I know she will start to groan.

“Have fun dealing with all that,” Kara says at the same time and walks off.

“It's nice seeing you,” I say aloud as I watch her swing her hips in a very sexy way.

I know I miss being around her so much.

Taking long strides, I reach the car as fast as I didn't want to delay them any further.

“Sorry. I had to have that meeting.” I hop into the car, tucking the file I received from Kara into my bag, and I zip it in place before igniting the vehicle.

“Is she your girlfriend? Why does she seem so mad at you?” Marin asks.

I laugh.

Why would they think K is my girlfriend? K is too cold to be in a relationship with anyone. I don't even think she has ever been.

“No, she's not my girlfriend,” I say, almost bursting into a laugh.

“She's real cute though. She definitely likes you. I mean, you're a hot body, she's a hot body, the both of you would be a hit together.” Marin assures.

I shake my head. I wonder what kinds of discussion they must have had for her to make up that assumption.

“I’d let her know you think she's hot.”

“Oh, no. Please.”

I can see her reaction in the rearview mirror as she acts irked by what I said.

“I knew she couldn't be your girlfriend. A full-time bodyguard sure isn't allowed to have relationships. That even makes sense because how will the care for someone when all they do is follow someone else around?” Tessa says roughly and shrugs.

The air in the car thins out after she said that.

I didn't even know what to use in responding to what she said.

*Tessa*I couldn't help but notice how Knox keeps up with an act that shows something is wrong with him. I couldn't help but continue to notice how uninterested he was in the things he normally took joy in doing in the house. I'm supposed to have my bath this morning, but I intentionally wait for Knox to come to my room. The way he has been acting like he doesn't care about whatever I was doing makes me feel like making sure he does. “Aren't you going to get up?” Knox finally opens my door and walks in. His voice is raised than normal. I pretend like it's his voice that woke me up, and I drag my feet while walking to the toilet. “Can you pass me my towel?” I intentionally left it on the hanger because I want him to get it for me.“You'd need to come over and get it for yourself.” He says curtly. I stood, glaring at him because I wasn't going to get the towel by myself if he didn't get it for me.“Why are you standing there?” “I'm not moving an inch if you don't help me get the t

*Tessa*Knox barges in on us and couldn't even give us the time by trying his best not to irritate me. His firm voice startles Marin and me, and he keeps to his word, insisting we will not leave with any jewellery we plan to take without formally requesting it. “Pleaseeeeeee, let us keep just this one. We promise you, Marcus will never find out.” Marin begs, trying so hard for him to buy her puppy eyes.Knox insists. “If you're not given, you're not leaving here with it. That's it. Both of you should get your bags. We need to leave right now.”“You can't treat us like that. You'd have been punished if not that we stepped up and cared to ask Marcus to reach you. The least you can do to appreciate our efforts is to give us this opportunity to take them. Marcus probably got them for those girls he carries around. He wouldn't know or care if any went missing. It's not our first time taking these things from him, and he never notices.” I snap and say, without trying to beg him like Marin

*Tessa*I didn't know what happened to Knox at the party. All Marin and I know is that he made sure we arrived at the room safely, and he told us he would be back, but he never came. It's now hours after, and Marcus is saying he hasn't heard anything from Knox. That's very unlike Knox, and it makes me worry if this time he isn't going to be back anymore.“You shouldn't just sit back and expect him to be back. What if something has happened to him? Why don't you care for your workers at all? He had been safeguarding me with his life since you hired him. I want to know if he's alright or not. That shouldn't be too much to ask.” I am not pleased with how Marcus is indifferent about Knox. “He will be back when he's ready. What happened yesterday wasn't a big deal. I'm sure he went out on his own will, and he will come back to a query because he left you and your friend behind. It shows how he wasn't keen on his job. He should know better.”I arch my brow, unable to bear the nonsense that

*Knox*A kiss from Kara didn't feel unexpected to me, but I do not know what he'd expectations must be with that kiss, and I know I'm not ready to be in a relationship with her or anyone so I wouldn't want to make her think there's something where I don't want there to be anything within us. I kiss her back gently but avoid kissing her deeply. “What's going on?” Kara moves away from me and asks.“Why?” I act like I didn't know she was asking why I am acting all distant with her. “Why are you acting like I'm forcing myself on you? Don't you want to be here as well?” I can barely see her face, but I know she wasn't in a good mood with how she grumbles. “You keep distancing yourself as I try to lean in. I don't want to be here anymore. Just take me back to the camp.” She nags.I knew I couldn't do that, and if I tried that, it would make things worse between us. I hold her by the chin and pull her face close to mine, “Is that why you're speaking to me like that?” I say, using my othe

*Knox*Kara gently follows after me, tapping the body of the combat vehicle, which begins to move after she does.“Why don't I feel connected to everyone anymore? Is there something that I don't know? They don't seem to respect me as they used to. I can read it in their faces.”Kara turns to me, her eyes glaring firmly. What I was saying doesn't seem relevant to her. “You've been away for far too long. What do you expect? Every time we tell you the next move we thought of and planned that it should work well in destroying Marcus and all that he has, you keep telling us to wait till another time, or you tell us you don't think that's necessary at the moment, or you tell us you don't buy the idea of Tessa taking the pain for Marcus. You've stopped being on our side since you started working for Marcus. Better put, since you met Tessa.”I arch my brows at her in sheer disappointment. “What do you mean since I met Tessa?"She scoffs, “What don't I mean? Look at how you protected her toni

*Knox*What I feared from happening finally did as I saw Dwayne walking over to Marcus with a knife in his hands. All that came to my mind was to ensure the safety of Tessa and Marin first. I know he isn't going to make it to Marcus because of how many bodyguards surround him.I warned Kara that Dwayne isn't fit to see Marcus face-to-face because the pain Marcus causes him is too recent for him not to act out of grief. “Let's move. Now!” I push Tessa and Marvin, who were frightened already at that sight, towards the room, shielding them with my body. While we approach the room, I catch sight of Kara as she watches me move them out of the main hall that is now filled with confusion. My earbuds vibrate. I leave it ringing till I successfully lock both Marin and Tessa into the room. Knowing that no one could access it unless they opened the door. “Knox, I'm scared,” Tessa says. I know she worries more about the safety of Marcus despite how much she insists on hating him.“Is Marcus g
