LOGINEMILY
~Flashback to Six Years Ago~ “Hey, four eyes!” Troy, Cole’s best friend, called from behind, and laughter erupted from their group. Even Cole was laughing. “Please, Troy.” I said quietly, keeping my eyes down as I walked faster. “I’ve told you to stop calling me that.” But the seven of them surrounded me like a pack of predators, blocking every escape. “Aw, don’t be shy now,” one of them sneered. “You love the attention, don’t you?” “Maybe if you stopped stuffing your face, we’d actually see your eyes behind those glasses,” another added. I swallowed hard. “Please, Troy. Stop.” “But I’m not lying, you smelly, fat girl,” he mocked, pouting dramatically. More laughter followed. My throat tightened painfully, but I refused to cry. Not again. “I’m not doing this with you,” I muttered, trying to move around them. “I have a chemistry class.” Before I could take another step, something yanked me backward. “Not so fast, fatty.” Troy gripped my backpack tightly. “Where do you think you’re going?” “I told you, I have a class.” My voice trembled despite my effort to steady it. “Please let me go.” “Emily, Emily…” he taunted. “Trying to be feisty?” Then he ripped my glasses off my face. My world instantly blurred. “Please, Troy,” I begged, panic rising in my chest. “I need my glasses. I can’t see without them.” Sneakers scraped against the tiled floor as they circled me. “Maybe she doesn’t need them,” someone snickered. “Yeah. She probably just hates looking at herself.” The first tears slipped down before I could stop it. “Please,” I whispered again. “Give them back.” “Report me then,” Troy scoffed. “Oh wait, you can’t.” He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “You’re here on a scholarship in my grandfather’s school, remember? One complaint and it disappears.” My stomach dropped. “Alright, enough.” Cole finally spoke. His voice was calm, but firm enough to make the others quiet down. “Give her back her glasses. We’re going to be late for Jules’ party.” Troy sighed dramatically. “Fine. Since our captain says so.” He tossed my glasses onto the floor, making them skid across the hallway. “Can’t believe we wasted time on her.” Their laughter faded as they walked away. I quickly grabbed my glasses and pushed them onto my face before hurrying down the hall. I didn’t stop until I burst into the girls’ restroom. My breath was uneven, my vision blurry all over again, this time from tears. I barely noticed someone walking out before I slammed straight into them, sending us both to the floor. “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry,” I babbled, scrambling up immediately. “Emily?” I froze at the familiar voice. Relief hit instantly. “Lillian.” She looked at me with wide, worried eyes. “What happened?” And that was all it took. I broke down completely. Lillian wrapped her arms around me without hesitation, rubbing my back while I cried into her shoulder. “You’ll be fine, Emily,” she whispered softly, cupping my face once my tears finally slowed. “I’ll always be here for you, okay?” I nodded weakly. Hoping she was right about everything getting better. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ~Present day~ I missed Lillian. She had always been there for me, and it’s been years since we last spoke. Part of me wondered if I’d run into her now that I was back in New York. “Earth to Emily.” Annie’s whisper and the light kick under the table snapped me out of my thoughts. I blinked quickly. “What?” “It’s your turn to introduce yourself,” she whispered back. “And just a heads up, everyone’s looking at you. Including the boss.” My stomach dropped. I glanced down at my trembling hands. You’ve got this, Emily. Don’t let him ruin this for you too. I slowly stood, smoothing my damp palms against my dress. “Uh…” glanced up, and froze the second those dark hazel eyes locked onto mine. “Go on,” he said smoothly. The sound of his voice sent an unwelcoming shiver down my spine. “My name is Emily Carter,” I began, forcing a polite smile. “And it’s an honor to work with such brilliant minds.” “Brilliant minds?” Someone muttered from the back. “What is she, fifty?” Laughter rippled across the room. My fingers curled tightly beneath the table. Don’t cry. Don’t shrink. You’re not that girl anymore. “That’s enough.” Cole’s voice cut sharply through the laughter. The room immediately fell silent. His expression remained unreadable as his gaze swept across the room. “This is a professional workspace.” His tone hardened. “Am I understood?” “Yes, sir,” everyone chorused. “You may sit, Ms…” “Carter. Emily Carter.” I lowered myself back into my seat, my pulse still racing. He gave a curt nod before continuing. “Now that introductions are over, we’ll move on to basics.” He began talking about the company’s vision and future goals, but I barely absorbed a word. My thoughts were spiraling. Was it really him? Cole Calloway. Does he recognize me? No. I forced myself to stay calm. He wouldn’t recognize me Not after six years. Not when everything about me has changed. Eventually, he glanced at his watch and closed his laptop. “I have another meeting to prepare for,” he said smoothly. “Any questions before I go?” A few people raised their hands., and he answered each one with calm authority. I just sat there, watching him. Waiting. Part of me prayed he’d remember me. Remember the girl he hurt. Another part prayed he wouldn’t. When he finally started towards the door, relief slowly loosened the tightness in my chest. But then he stopped. Slowly, his eyes found mine again. “You,” he said, pointing directly at me. My stomach dropped. His gaze lingered a second longer than necessary. “Follow me.”COLE I didn’t need to check my security feed to know she’d been standing there the whole time Vanessa was in here. The pink stain on her cheeks was enough proof. I had one top rule I made sure everyone working here followed, and that was no romantic or sexual relationships during work hours. But today, I broke it. I let Vanessa come into my office despite knowing what she was there for. She was a married woman. Married to a man who made me his nemesis after I withdrew from working with him. Richard and I went way back, but unbeknownst to him, so did Vanessa and I. Whenever he went around parading himself with other women, she came running back to me. Unfortunately for her, I was a man who believed in not mixing business with pleasure, so I always turned her down. The past few days had been playing mind games on me, making me think of doing unspeakable things to someone I shouldn’t have been thinking about. My body and mind needed something forbidden,
EMILY The last file slipped into its folder, and I leaned back in my chair, rolling the stiffness from my shoulders with a yawn. Outside my cubicle, most of the office had already emptied, leaving only a handful of employees finishing up for the day. I’d spent the entire day buried in reports, budgets, and project timelines, breaking only when Annie practically dragged me to the lunchroom for lunch. Now, with the fake project finally mapped out, all that was left was to meet Cole to show him what I’d put together. With my bag in one hand and the files tucked under the other arm, I turned off my desk light and headed to his office. As I arrived at the door, I came to an abrupt halt at the sound of a feminine moan. “Do you like what you see, big daddy?” The woman said in a husky voice. I should have taken that as my cue to leave, but instead, my curiosity got the best of me. I pressed my ear against the door, waiting to hear what Cole was going to say.
EMILY ~7:15 am the next day~ My heels clicked against the polished marble floor of the office as I walked down the quiet hallway. At this hour, the only other person in sight was one of the janitors pushing a cleaning cart from one cubicle to the next. After Jack left, a sick feeling settled in my stomach, making it unbearable for me to sleep. I spent part of the night lying on my couch, wondering what kind of business proposal Cole would possibly want to see me so early for. Cole and I alone in a room were never a good fit. We either ended up arguing, or we ended up saying or doing something stupid—like in the car when I kept leaning against him because I was terrified of the thunderstorm. Then there was what he said about ‘Throwing me over his lap and giving me a little punishment’ before leaving me standing in my hotel room with my mouth hanging wide open. Despite the number of times I tried pushing those words away, they always flashed through my mind like a
EMILY “Mommy! Guess what happened today!” I smiled before I could stop myself. “What happened, sweetheart?” “Grandma took me to the park, and this girl pushed me.” My smile vanished. “She pushed you? Are you okay?” “Mhmm.” I heard a tiny sniffle. “I fell on my knees, but grandma took me to the clinic.” Relief loosened the knot in my chest. “Did the doctor take good care of you?” “Yep! And I got a Barbie plaster.” Her excitement returned in an instant. “It’s pink! Wait, look!” A brief silence followed. “Oh…” she murmured. “You can’t see.” I laughed softly. “No, baby. It’s not a video call, so I can’t.” “It’s really pretty, though. Grandma said I was so brave, and then she bought me chocolate ice cream because I cried.” “You cried?” “Just a little,” she said quickly. “Only because it really, really hurt.” I listened as she told me about her day— the new friends she’d made at school and at the park, the toys grandma had bought for her— and I co
COLE “Welcome back to New York, sir,” my driver said as Emily and I stepped off the plane. “Jack,” I said as I handed him my carry-on. “You came early.” He threw his head back in a laugh. “I did actually. I came yesterday to pick you up, but I was told your flight had been moved to this morning, so I booked a room nearby for the night.” “I see,” I said as I stepped onto the tarmac. “Good morning, ma’am,” he greeted Emily before taking her bag. We walked over to the black Range Rover parked by the curb, and once we were all settled in, Jack asked, “Are you going home or to the office, sir?” “I have a lot to catch up on, at the office. But you’ll be taking Ms. Carter to her place.” I caught the sharp snap of Emily’s head from my paripheral vision. “I have work too.” “No you don’t,” I shot back despite wanting to watch her complain through thousands of emails and paperwork, I knew she needed a familiar space to rest. “But—” “No buts, Ms. Cart
EMILY While on my way back to the hotel, my stomach growled, making me realize I hadn’t eaten throughout the day. So, as soon as I got into my hotel room, I ordered a burger and fries with extra ketchup. After everything that had crashed into me like a tidal wave, all I wanted to do was eat and sleep. But first, a steamy hot shower. I stepped out of the shower and stood in front of the mirror, letting my eyes trail down my naked body. They first landed on my right arm, which was beginning to turn a shade of purple from where Richard had grabbed me. I mentally noted to put some ointment on it before my gaze continued lower and settled on the scar below my belly. The scar was faint, but I knew exactly when it began and ended from memory. It wasn’t just a c-section scar. It was a mark that carried so much history—a reminder of why I had to become strong so I could finally spread my wings and fly free from the shadows of my past. “My sweet Aria,” I whispered with
