Grace was hit by the car. Pain spread through her whole body.
Her vision blurred, and soon she lost consciousness. The car screeched to a halt. A tall, handsome man stepped out quickly.
He walked over to Grace, bent down, and lifted her in his arms in a bridal style. Without hesitation, he carried her to his car. After laying her gently on the back seat, he slid into the driver’s seat. His cold voice echoed as he made a call.
“Cancel my flight. Something came up. I won’t be going on this business trip.”
The man drove her straight to the hospital.
While unconscious, Grace drifted into a long dream of her childhood. Thirteen-year-old Grace stood in front of a huge mansion with her adoptive father, who had just brought her from the orphanage.
She smiled brightly at Mr. Adrian Wells. “It’s so big, Uncle,” she said with excitement.
The man gave her a soft smile. “From now on, call me Dad. I’ll introduce you to your mom and brother. I brought you here because your mom isn’t well. We lost our daughter, Emily, and she’s been in depression since then. I hope you’ll make her happy.”
Grace believed her father had adopted her out of love, to be their daughter because they had lost one.
Adrian took her inside. A woman was sitting in the living hall.
“Look, Lily, who is here,” Adrian said warmly.
The woman turned around, quickly stood up, and rushed toward Grace. She cupped Grace’s face with trembling hands, tears brimming in her eyes. “Adrian… she has the same eyes as our Emily,” she whispered in a choked voice.
Adrian nodded. “I adopted her. From now on, she’ll be our daughter.”
Lily hugged Grace tightly. “You are our daughter now. I’ll make your favorite strawberry cake for you.”
Grace didn’t like strawberry cake, but she stayed silent. She ate it quietly, thinking she would tell her new mother someday that she hated strawberries and loved chocolate instead. She had always wanted to eat chocolate cake baked by a mother. But that day never came.
Her adoptive mother always made strawberry cake. It wasn’t just the cake—Grace also disliked pink dresses and never enjoyed playing piano. Once, she even tried to tell Adrian Wells about it.
But he only said coldly, “These were Emily’s favorite things to do.”
That was when Grace realized the truth. She wasn’t adopted to be the Wells family’s daughter. She was adopted to be a substitute for their lost Emily.
Grace woke up from her dream with a start. She was lying in a hospital room, her head aching painfully.
A doctor entered and hurried to her side, helping her sit up. “How are you feeling now?” he asked gently.
“I… I feel pain in my head,” Grace replied in confusion.
The doctor checked her vitals and said, “You have a head injury. It’s normal to feel pain. Don’t worry, you’ll recover soon.”
Grace was puzzled at first, but then the memories returned. She had broken up with Lucas and drunk too much.
After that, she had thought about ending her life and stepped into the road.
“So… I tried to take my own life while drunk,” she thought bitterly.
She looked at the doctor. “Doctor, who brought me here?”
The doctor shook his head. “I wasn’t on duty last night, so I don’t know the details. But I heard you were hit by a rich man’s car. His driver was the one behind the wheel. They say that rich man scolded his driver harshly because of hitting someone by his expensive car.
Grace said slowly " it's not that driver's fault. I was the one who was at fault. "
After hearing this the doctor shook his head pitifully" you should be careful while walking on the road. That driver is really kind, he might lose his job because of you but still he brought you to hospital."
Guilt pricked Grace’s heart. She had never thought her reckless act could cost someone their livelihood.
“Where is that driver? Can I meet him?” she asked softly.
While adjusting her IV drip, the doctor replied, “He must be outside. I’ll inform him that you’re awake.”
After finishing his checks, the doctor left the room.
Just then, a colleague approached him in the hallway. “What are you doing here? Come on, let’s go see the drama. Remember the girl who was hit by a rich man’s car last night? People are saying she’s his mistress. They claim she tried to kill herself in front of his car just to take revenge. That poor driver is innocent. Now her family is creating a huge scene in the hospital. Let’s go and watch.”
The first doctor frowned. “But isn’t that the girl I just came from checking?”
His colleague tapped his shoulder. “No, idiot. The girl you checked was the one hit by CEO Ethan Marino’s car—the head of the Marino family himself.”
Without waiting, his colleague grabbed his arm and dragged him off to see the commotion. The doctor left will his colleague without knowing he just caused a misunderstanding.
Grace glanced at the man driving beside her. Only then did she realize—she didn’t even know his name yet. Gathering courage, she asked softly,“You never told me your name.”Ethan’s hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. He couldn’t reveal his true identity to her. Keeping his eyes on the road, he replied casually,“Noha Willson.”Grace smiled faintly and nodded. “I see… I haven’t properly introduced myself either. My name is Grace.”Of course, Ethan already knew everything about her, but he only responded with a slight nod, saying nothing more. Soon, the car stopped at the address Grace had given him.She stepped out and looked at him gratefully.“Thank you for the lift. Actually, I want to thank you properly. Can you tell me when you’ll be free? I’d like to treat you to a coffee for saving me and giving me a ride.”Ethan’s lips curved in the faintest smile. “I’ll be free tomorrow evening.”“Perfect,” Grace said brightly. “Then tomorrow after office, coffee is on me.”Wavin
Lucas was about to say something when an employee walked in and said,“Sir, your uncle wants to meet you.”Lucas looked at Emily and spoke gently, “I’ll go see him. You wait for me in my office.”Emily nodded, and Lucas left. As soon as he was gone, Emily turned to Grace with a smirk.“I hope you’ll enjoy your time here, sister.”Grace didn’t bother replying. She simply ignored her and continued with her work.On the other side, Lucas reached his uncle’s office. He knocked, and when he heard “come in,” he stepped inside. Ethan was sitting at his desk, reading a file with a serious face.Lucas felt a little nervous. “You called me, Uncle?”Ethan closed the file and looked at him. His tone was cold.“Yes. I heard you brought the Wells family’s daughter into our company.”Lucas nodded slowly. “Y-yes, Uncle. She wanted to work here.”Ethan’s voice turned sharper.“Do you think this company is a charity? That anyone who wants to work here can just join? Does she even have the qualification
Grace looked toward Ethan and Noha after hearing the employee greet them with, “Good morning, CEO.”She turned to Noha in shock. “Are you… the CEO of this company? I… it means you are Ethan Marino?”Ethan quickly spoke up to cover, “You are right. He is the CEO of this company.”Grace felt her mind go blank. She thought she had finally cut all ties with Lucas, but now she owed money to his uncle. She had always heard from Lucas that his uncle was a strict and cold man. She had never seen him before, but Lucas had said enough for her to believe it.Ethan and Noha noticed Grace spacing out after hearing the name Ethan Marino, but they chose to stay silent.Grace forced a polite smile. “I will take my leave now, Mr. Ethan. I will pay back the money slowly.” After saying that, she turned and left.Ethan’s lips curved in amusement. Grace hadn’t reacted the way he expected. He thought that even if she didn’t know who he was, after hearing Noha’s name as Ethan Marino, she would definitely tr
Albert’s brows furrowed when he noticed the bandage on Grace’s forehead. His voice was cold, almost sharp.“What happened to your head?”Grace’sreplied with indifferent and flat tone "Nothing. Just a small accident.”Without waiting for another word, she turned to head upstairs, ready to pack her things. But albert 's cold voice stopped her “Where are you going? I’m not done talking.”Grace turned back, her gaze icy. There were no emotion on her face. “What do you want to talk about? Did your precious sister again complain about me?"Albert’s jaw tightened at her tone.“Don’t pretend to be innocent, Grace. Why did you slap Emily last night? She was crying the whole night. Did you insult her again?”In the past, Grace would have tried desperately to defend herself, begging them to believe that she didn't do anything wrong. But tonight, she didn’t bother. Instead, a bitter smile curved her lips. She said coldly "Yes. I slapped her. So what? I actually wanted to slap her more, but unfortu
Ethan had already made up his mind—he would pretend to be poor, just to test Grace. His sharp gaze shifted toward Noha, who was staring back at him with a confused expression. Ethan gave the slightest shake of his head, a silent signal only Noha could understand. He couldn’t reveal the truth to the girl.Grace, however, caught none of this silent exchange. Her eyes remained fixed on Noha, filled with hope and desperation. “Mister, are you even listening to me?” she asked softly, her voice trembling. “Please forgive him… don’t punish him for my mistake.”Noha hesitated, torn between his loyalty to his boss and the girl’s pleading eyes. He glanced at Ethan, seeking instructions.Ethan cleared his throat, lowering his head as if ashamed. “The boss is furious,” he said, feigning helplessness. “He told me I’ll have to pay four thousand dollars for the damage I caused. I’ve begged him countless times, but… he won’t forgive me.”Then he turned his eyes to Noha , pretending to be pitiful “Bos
Grace felt terrible for the driver. Because of her recklessness, he was about to lose his job. The thought weighed heavily on her chest, and she decided she would apologize to him and do whatever she could to protect him from getting fired.A few minutes earlier, before Grace had woken up, Ethan Marino was sitting quietly in the hospital room, waiting for her to regain consciousness. Just then, his phone rang. It was his assistant. He didn't want to disturb the unconscious girl, so he stepped out of the room to take the call.“Sir, I’m already outside the hospital,” his assistant said from the other side of the phone.“I brought a new set of clothes for you.”“Good. Come up to the fifth floor,” Ethan replied in his cold, deep voice. “And what about the business trip I told you to cancel last night?”“I informed them you won’t be attending the France meeting due to personal reasons.”“Fine. Hurry up to the fifth floor. I’ve been stuck in these bloodstained clothes since last night. It’
