Chapter 2

Author: Dawn Luckwell
He stuttered and stammered, trying his best to talk me out of doing something rash.

"With the scorching heat at the end of the world, that guy won't last long. We need to focus on gathering supplies right now!

"Do you want to get even with Jennifer? Why not have her come and wait on us, be our gofer?"

"That's your plan, huh? All right!" I could not help but laugh at his suggestion.

'Ha! Gavin, do you think you're the only one who got a second chance? I thought you were my best friend, but you betrayed me and now you dare to lie to my face! This time, I'm going to make both of you pay!' I thought angrily.

I have heard of people getting caught for cheating on someone, but never someone who would admit it willingly.

Right after Gavin got his second chance of life, he came to me and spilled the beans about Jennifer cheating on me.

Then he had the audacity to help me stock up on supplies as if nothing happened.

Thinking he suddenly grew a conscience and wanted to make things right? No chance.

I still remember back in our sophomore year of high school during finals, Gavin took money to help someone cheat on a test.

I warned him not to risk it, but I was the one who almost got caught.

While the teacher was looking away, Gavin tried to sneak the paid-for answers to the other student, but the note ended up by my feet.

He made all sorts of faces, trying to get me to pass it along.

The wad of paper under my foot just would not stay still. Right as I was about to kick it away, the exam monitor caught me.

"What's that under your foot? Give it here!"

The monitor picked up the paper ball, unfolded it, and his face went pale.

"Teacher, it wasn't me..."

"No excuses!"

He would not hear me out and snatched my test away in an instant.

He grabbed me by the collar and handed me off to the head teacher who was on duty.

I could not betray Gavin and tell on him for cheating, that's not what friends do.

When I did not confess or say a word, the head teacher made me stand outside the classroom as punishment.

Gavin snuck over to stand with me.

"Wesley, you're a true friend for not snitching!

"You know I've been short on cash, trying to earn a bit. However, if my mom finds out, I'm toast!"

I tossed my head with a grin. "It's all good! We're best friends, right?"

"If you have to write an apology, I will do it for you. And if there's a girl you like, I'll help you win her over!" He slapped my shoulder like he was the one doing me a favor.

However, he did not own up to his mistake and let me take the fall.

I ended up in trouble, my parents were called, and my dad gave me an earful.

I thought I was being loyal.

However, that sense of pride turned into a joke when it came to Jennifer.

Jennifer was the prettiest girl at university, and I fell for her the second I saw her.

I was too scared of rejection to talk to her.

Gavin promised he would help me win her over.

After we got her number, we started hanging out, always on my tab.

Looking back, I guess they were together from the start.

So, when everything went crazy at the end of the world, people showed who they really were.

They took over my house, my bed, the last of my stuff, and even tried to take my life!

Gavin came back to life and found me. He wanted to see if I had come back too, and he was also looking to take more of my things.

"Wesley, what's up with you? You're spacing out," Gavin asked, looking worried.

I took a deep breath and snapped back to reality. "I'm just trying to remember if we forgot to buy anything," I said, holding back the urge to punch him.

Gavin said "Oh," and rubbed his hands together. "You know I'm always broke before payday. I am totally out of cash.

"However, weren't you saving up to buy a ring? Since you're over Jennifer, you might as well spend that money on food and drinks.

"With this crazy heatwave, who knows how long it'll last? We should stock up."

It did not take long for Gavin's nasty side to show up.

He planned to use my stuff to buy a bunch of supplies and keep them for himself, then shack up with Jennifer.

The ground was scorching, and I tried to get up, but my back was broken, and I could not move.I could only watch as the sun cooked me.That kind of terror, most people could not handle it.Then, to make things worse, I saw Gavin and Jennifer eat me like I was a dried-up roast lamb.Snapping out of it, I realized my back was drenched.I put down my chips and gulped down a bottle of Earl Grey tea to calm down. When I looked back at the screen, Jennifer was lying in a pool of blood.Gavin was beside himself with excitement, scooping up her blood with empty water bottles. He kept muttering, "Can't let it go to waste, can't let it go to waste!"This time, it was not me on the menu, it was Jennifer.I quickly saved a copy of the video.Even though the internet was spotty, I managed to video call Gavin. He was thrilled to see me okay and could not wait to show off his latest wins."Wesley, Jennifer cheated on you again, but I got back at her for you. I'm a true friend, huh?"I

"I think he's got lots of stuff, he just hasn't told anyone."Upon hearing this, Jennifer flipped over and sat up, a slight smile forming on her lips. "Are you thinking of taking his stash?""Taking?" Gavin shook his head, a crafty glint in his eye.He pushed himself up from the couch and sat by the bed, holding Jennifer's hand firmly."Jennifer, why don't you go see Andrew and request some food and water?" Gavin suggested.Jennifer grasped the implication behind Gavin's words. She jerked her hand away and shouted, "Gavin, you're the worst!"Gavin remained unruffled, simply maintaining his smile."It's not as if you haven't cheated before. I am not as rigid as Wesley. We're just trying to make it through!"As Jennifer looked at Gavin's smug face, she could not take it anymore and slapped him hard across the face, several times.Gavin's face swelled from the slaps, but he continued to grin at Jennifer. However, a sense of unease crept over me as I observed Gavin's smile."Je

However, I was not celebrating Gavin's big payday. I was celebrating because he had finally used up all the food and water on the top shelf. When Gavin realized the fridge was empty and went to get more from the storeroom, he found an empty box. He stared at the box, wondering if he had made a mistake because he was so stressed out. He opened another box from the huge pile of drinks, and it was empty too. He rubbed his eyes and opened a third one: empty again."Jennifer!" he yelled.Jennifer came in slowly. "Gavin, you're not making me get water again, are you? Do you think I am your slave?""I am not making you do anything! Where's the water in these boxes?"Gavin pointed to the empty boxes on the floor and even showed Jennifer another one: still empty."No way! Why are all these boxes empty?"Jennifer could not believe it. She checked the other boxes, none of them looked like they had been opened before, but they were all empty. Gavin and Jennifer checked everything else, but

Gavin and Jennifer were hiding behind the door, listening to all the sounds outside, super excited. They even had a bottle of cold champagne ready to celebrate their big score in the middle of the scorching apocalypse, which felt like the end of the world. However, the small amount of water they had was far from sufficient for the extremely thirsty and irritable neighbors. That night, two individuals from apartment 603 could not bear the heat any longer and snuck into apartment 401.Gavin and Jennifer were a bit tipsy from the champagne and did not notice the looming danger. There was some shuffling at the door, but they did not catch on.I called Gavin right away.I was not going to let Gavin and Jennifer take advantage of my belongings, so I certainly was not going to let the other neighbors off the hook that easily."Hello?" Gavin picked up, sounding all sleepy.I yelled, "Gavin, I saw what's going on in the group chat and I'm worried. You think the people who can't buy wat

I rolled my eyes but kept up my innocent act. "I haven't lived through what they have, so I can't really feel it. Didn't you tell me to forgive Jennifer? These folks are nicer than her, aren't they?""Oh, come on!" Gavin was so mad he threw his phone down and grabbed a baseball bat, heading to the front door.He peeked through the peephole before he locked it up tight.Jennifer rested her head on his shoulder and whispered, "What's going on?"Gavin frowned. "Wesley blabbed about our supplies. I'm worried we'll get robbed tonight.""What?" Jennifer gasped, ran to the kitchen, and came back with a chef's knife. They both crouched by the door, ready for anything.I watched it all on the monitor and could not help but smile a little. No one would dare to try anything tonight. They were not desperate enough yet. However, Gavin and Jennifer could not let their guard down, not even for a moment. This vigilance went on even after the backup power gave out from the heat. Then, darknes
