MAEVE I turned towards where the path had been and stared in confusion while struggling with the crippling feeling that I had made a terrible mistake. “Don’t let that bother you, it happens often” the strange man called out and I turned my gaze to him.His full form came into view and my confusion intensified; he had a humanoid form with wings sticking out of his back but his figure seemed to shift periodically. One second, you’re seeing a man, the next a bird, and as he walked towards me, I felt like I needed to run in the opposite direction. An unusual wave of fear enveloped me when he stopped a few steps away from me and stretched out his hand.“Who, who are you?” I stuttered. His wings flapped open and a black swirling hole appeared behind him. The hole seemed to pulsate with life, I felt like it was calling out to me but what stood out more was the certainty that I had seen it somewhere before. I just couldn’t remember where and something about his expression thr

MAEVE “Definitely,” I replied. “And you better not waste any second to reach out to me once you get somewhere safe.”She squeezed my hand then let go, “I’ll go after you,” she said and stepped back.“You’ll need supplies,” I began and started fiddling with the bag, trying to open it when she stopped me.“Keep it,” she said and I rolled my eyes.“How’re you going to…” I started to protest but her expression stopped me in my tracks. She looked like the colour was draining from her face and her eyes held the pain she didn’t express with words.“I’ll be fine,” she said with a sad smile. The rustle came again and we looked around nervously. “You should go, now,” she urged and I turned towards the path.I walked towards it with quick strides and turned to look at her before crossing the threshold but she had lowered her head in a bid to hide the tears which streamed down her face. I swallowed and turned around, if I didn’t leave right away, I would succumb to my emotions and sta

MAEVE “The path’s also dark on the map,” she said in a shaky voice. I stared at the path and chuckled, pleasantly surprised that my theory had turned out to be true. When the map changed after the cloaking spell, I had a hard time processing what was happening but I began wondering if the forest wanted us to shed our human form momentarily. The more time I spent staring at the path before me, the more I felt inclined to try out the theory. I didn’t know a lot about the Waddock but being here felt like I had stepped into a much different and powerful realm than what I was used to, it felt nothing like the books back home had described, I could feel a low hum under my feet like the ground was vibrating and that unnerved me as much as it fascinated me. I inhaled as a cold familiar tinge slowly crept on me, I could tell that it came from the path and another idea had already begun forming in my mind but I needed Aisling to turn too to be certain I wasn’t getting ahead of myse

MAEVE “Something’s wrong,” Aisling said as her feet touched the ground. Her wings slowly dissolved into thin air as she morphed back into human formI wanted to say something sarcastic but her expression stopped me, she seemed like she was in a daze and I swallowed at the thought of our problems continuously compounding. “What is it?”She cleared and gestured around, “the forest it’s… it’s changing” she answered and I glanced at the trees which seemed to be unbothered by the presence of two lost beings.“Changing?” I asked and squinted at her then back at the trees. “What do you mean?”She took the map from me, stared at it for a moment then shook her head. “I don’t know how to explain it aptly but when I flew up to look for a way out,” she raised her to lock eyes with me. “I saw the trees rearrange themselves.”“Are… are you sure?” I stammered and she nodded, handing the map back to me.“If we could understand the map, I’m sure we’d be able to find our way out but how are

MAEVE Getting the map was the easy part, leaving the realm unnoticed was another ball game. Aisling was right, the soldiers might be distracted but they weren’t all stupid. A few of them hung around the entrance, they looked disturbed by what was happening on the other side of the realm but knew they had to stand their ground and watch the area. I could see why we needed a form of distraction and a secret entrance to make it this far, but the real problem was getting towards the barrier and slipping through unnoticed. I turned to Aisling and could see that she was already thinking about a way around it. We had made it past our first hurdle which was getting out of the palace grounds unnoticed, hopefully, we make it past this one. I turned around and imagined what it would be like if we simply took a boat and sailed away but that was wishful thinking. Neither of us knew how to sail correctly, the map we had was one of the enchanted forest and travelling by water would g

MAEVE “You found it,” Aisling said in a hushed tone as soon as I stepped into the room. She was wearing a rose in her hair and her eyes held her excitement. I shut the door behind me and winced a little as the faint smell of garlic lingered in the air but I had spent enough time outside and even more within these walls with the bulbs that had been replaced so it had little to no effect on me. I smiled wistfully and made my way to the middle of the room where she was standing and took her hand in mine. She pulled me into a hug and let go as soon as our bodies touched, her eyes shone excitedly as she clapped excitedly then quickly went silent. She smiled as she walked to the bathtub to run a bath and hummed a low tune as she picked up the jars containing oils and dripped some of them into the tub. “Word travelled as fast as I expected, she told you didn’t she?” I asked as a thin smile spread across my face. I stared at her silhouette and my thoughts drifted to life back

MAEVE You could almost taste the tension in the atmosphere the next few days after the party. When I stepped into the room with Aisling, everyone watched keenly till we found seats away from everyone else. Then they promptly turned their attention to the food in front of them and the glass

I know, I'm just trying to think.” Sweeney shoved his hand into his pockets and stared into the distance. “I never thought this would happen, they had no reason to attack us.”“You’re not making any sense, Sweeny, what's going on?” I asked, concern etched across my face. “The sea raiders, we recei

Being a highborn in the realm of Leprechauns, Goblins and Fairies was an added advantage but being in vampire with no other vampire in sight besides the soldiers that stood sentry at my door and the personal guards that followed at a respectable distance when I took walks in Sweeney’s

  • Irish Midsummer   4: Siege!

I spent the early hours of the next day locked up in my room. Aisling and the other servants stood sentry outside the room as they tried to persuade me to open up the door but I sat by the small round table in my room ignoring their pleas to be let in and continued studying the map of the Brock
