It Was, A Beautiful Breakup

ZORIANNA'S POV

I hummed dreamily, as I watched_from my slightly elevated position on the high rock in the campus mini garden_ the winter breeze blowing softly over the large trees, their leaves falling down in a slow rhythmic motion.

It's winter again.

I inhaled softly with eyes closed, as the familiar scent of Christmas the harmattan breeze seem to bring every mid December, greeted my nostrils.

I had just finished writing my last exam for the semester and decided to have a quiet time at my regular spot in the university before returning to the hostel and preparing for my trip back home, to spend the winter break.

I smiled as a dry leaf fell on my lap. I picked it up and carefully examined it for a while.

The sudden ringing of my phone interrupted me. I tossed the leaf away and reached for my backpack beside me. I quickly retrieved my phone and soon rolled my eyes on seeing the caller ID.

Carter! The only thorn in my flesh.

"Hello, loser," He began as soon as I received the call.

I rolled my eyes as I sucked my cheek in.

"Oh, great! You're still alive?!" I retorted with mock enthusiasm.

"Amazing way to greet a friend you haven't seen in months, huh?' He said, feigning offense.

I chuckled.

"Carter darling, you know you can't fool me right? So save all that unnecessary nagging and tell me why you called. You and I know you won't just call without any serious reason."

"Whatever. I'm not surprised since you've always been such a kill joy. Anyways, Cassy says to remind you not to forget about the stuff you guys talked about earlier. We'll be coming back home soon for the xmas break." He said.

I thought as much. This loser never calls except he's implied to do so by Cassidy.

To think that he's my Best friend. What was I even thinking...

"You see, I was right just now Carter. How's Cassy doing? When are you guys leaving KD?' I asked excitedly.

It's only been months but it feels like forever since I last saw my childhood best friends. Cassidy and Carter. They are twins and yes, they're identical.

Carter may be such an annoying freak but I love him greatly. Strangely, his pestering makes me feel like a normal human sometimes.

"It's a secret so I won't spill. But if you beg me a little, I might consider giving you a hint." He said teasingly.

The idiot. Of all people, he should know I won't even think about his ridiculous offer.

"You know I won't. Besides if you refuse to spill, I'll just ask Cassy or Mom." I said, smirking like he could see me.

"Argghh! Zori how is it that till now no matter what I do, it doesn't just get to you? Are you sure we are even best friends?"

I was just about to answer his dumb question when I heard him hollered.

"Ouch! Cassy!"

I laughed, Cassy must have smacked his head.

"Idiot, she's our bestfriend and will always be." My grin widened when I heard her voice.

Seems like she already snatched the phone from Carter.

"Heyyy, girlie!" I squealed, almost jumping.

"My love, how have you been? Don't mind Carter. I'm sure I don't need to explain him to you as it seems you know him better than I do." She said.

"Don't bother about him please. I've been great. I finished my exams today so I'll be heading home from campus soon. Carter tells me you guys would be returning soon. When would that be?' I asked as I pulled my hoodie over my head.

"Saturday, the next Saturday, not tomorrow o," she laughed.

"Wow, that's great! I'll prepare as we discussed earlier. But then, I thought you are through with your exams, what's keeping you from coming home earlier than that?" I asked again.

"Well, you know babe. But I'll just spill anyway. Jayce wants us to spend some time together before we travel and Carter wants to take Claire shopping this week. So we just have to stay back a few more days." She explained.

"Ohh," I laughed. "You know how we run things ma'am. Don't you dare get back here without something great for me." I added playfully.

"Of course, I wouldn't dare to, ma'am." She retorted and we laughed.

"Alright, hun. Do take care of yourself." I said.

"Wait, before you go, I've been wanting to ask if you've seen Owen of late." She asked.

"No dear, I haven't." I said. "But If I do before I return home, I'll let you know." I added.

"Okay dearie, bye for now and take care too." She said.

"Bye! Coconut head, you know I love you right?" Carter shouted from the background.

"Idiot!" I laughed. "I love you too, goodbye. Say me hi to Jayce and Claire." I added, my voice still laced with laughter.

"Alright dear. Goodbye." Cassy said before she hung up.

I smiled and carefully climbed down the rock.

Needless to say, Jayce is Cassy's boyfriend and Claire is Carter's girlfriend.

Unlike myself, my childhood best friends decided to school somewhere outside the capital. So they chose University of Kaduna and they got admitted there. Now they are in 300 level in different departments.

Myself, I've always been a home girl, I didn't want to school far from home so I applied Bingham University here in the federal capital and thankfully I received the admission letter to study Mass Communication three years ago.

My name is Zoriana Gregory, I'm the second born and only girl child amongst my siblings. My parents are healthy and we live comfortably in our own house in Gwagwalada. My home is a bit far from the University so I stay in the campus hostel during school sessions and go home on every break.

I'll be 22 soon, in just a matter of weeks to be precise. I'm light skinned, pretty as many always say, a little bit more than slender and I'm about 5'7 ft tall. Plus I'm blessed with a really long black hair.

I've been in relationships before and yes, I've gotten my heart broken severally, so I quit.

As far as I'm concerned, I won't be dating anyone again except he's my destined future husband.

The problem is, how am I supposed to know if he'll be?

A brilliant thought occurred to me just now. I should give it a try right?
