Lexi's POV

The smell of coffee filled the apartment before the sun fully rose. I stood barefoot in the kitchen, wearing one of Brandon’s oversized sweaters that I had accidentally taken from the laundry pile last week and never returned. The sleeves were too long, the hem brushed my thighs, and I hadn’t bothered with pants. The fabric was warm, safe, and somehow familiar in an unfamiliar way. It was probably wrong of me to wear it, but at this point, I didn't really care, it's not as if he's ever home to catch me. I would just wash it again and return it before he noticed it was missing, if he even noticed at all.

The only sounds in the kitchen were the low hum of the fridge and the faint bubbling from the coffee pot.

Routine. I needed it today more than ever.

I prepared two mugs: one with oat milk and a drizzle of honey for Aria, and one black and strong for myself.

I placed them on the table and then went to the counter, where the small white pill bottles sat quietly in a neat line

  • It's Just Business    "Unexpectedly"

Brandon's POV The sound of the elevator doors closing behind me was the only real noise in the apartment. Everything else was still. Quiet. Controlled.Just how I liked it.Or at least, how I thought I did.I walked across the penthouse, loosening my tie as I headed for the whiskey decanter on the side table. It had been a long day—longer than I’d anticipated. Meetings, calls, back-to-back conversations with investors, and, of course, ensuring every medical detail for Aria’s surgery was perfectly arranged.I didn’t like relying on hospitals, strangers, or the promise of protocol. I trusted logistics. I trusted my team. I didn’t trust chance.I poured scotch into a glass and stared out the window.Lexi hadn’t texted me all day.Not that I was expecting her to.Except deep down, I was.Ever since the fundraiser, something had shifted, slightly…subtly. But it was there. That kiss on the terrace, her move, not mine, had thrown me off balance for a moment. And that moment lingered in my mi

  • It's Just Business    Let the Countdown begin

Lexi's POV The hospital walls were too white, sterile, cold, and unforgiving, just like the day itself. I hated the way the fluorescent lights hummed overhead, how the waiting room chairs were just a bit too stiff, designed to remind you that you didn’t truly belong here, at least not for long. I was used to hospitals by now, but that didn’t mean I liked them. I don’t think anyone does. Except for the workers, of course.Aria sat next to me, swinging her legs, trying to look casual as if this was just another one of our regular check-ups. But I could tell she was nervous. Her hands kept folding and unfolding in her lap, and her bottom lip was caught between her teeth. Today, she wasn't wearing any makeup. She looked pale and small.“Stop chewing your lip,” I murmured. She glanced at me and rolled her eyes but did it again anyway. Typical. We were here for the full preoperative appointment, scheduled to last most of the morning: bloodwork, vital signs, infection screening, medication r

  • It's Just Business    After the Applause

Lexi's POV The car ride was quiet. Not the peaceful or restful kind of silence; no, this was the thick, aching variety, heavy with things left unsaid. I sat with my back pressed against the cool leather seat, my eyes fixed on the blur of lights outside the tinted window. We didn’t speak.Brandon sat beside me, his posture straight as usual. One hand rested on his lap while the other curled near his jaw as he gazed out the opposite window. His silence wasn’t new, but tonight it was different. It was measured, almost as if he were restrained.Maybe he was trying to keep himself from saying something he’d regret.Or maybe I was.The image of his father, Bernard Wilson, was still burned into my brain. He had stared at me as if he were carving me open with his eyes. His questions had been sharp and laced with judgment, while his wife struck me as a snake, nice on the outside but plotting something sinister on the inside, I knew her type having to deal with her type regularly. She smiled a

  • It's Just Business    A Stage of Wolves

Lexi's POV I didn't think; I just acted. The second I saw the shadow out of the corner of my eye, the kiss just happened. My brain hadn't caught up yet, but now it had, and it was screaming that of all people to almost catch us mid-fight, it had to be him. I just hoped he hadn't heard too much. Silence. I didn’t move, but I was spiraling inside. Neither did Brandon. Bernard Wilson stood just outside the terrace door, flanked by shadows and judgment, his steel-blue eyes fixed on us like a hawk watching its prey. The air shifted the moment he spoke. The warmth of the kiss vanished, and even the chill of the night air seemed to retreat. “Father,” Brandon said, his tone as flat as polished stone. It was as if he had become even icier; I didn't think that was possible. “Enjoying the night air, I see,” Bernard replied, stepping closer. The door clicked shut behind him. I stepped back instinctively but not far. My pulse was steady. Barely. Bernard’s eyes flicked to me, slowly. He

  • It's Just Business    "Game On"

Brandon's POV The camera flashes began the moment I stepped out of the car. I could hear them, click, click, click, one after another, like the rattle of gunfire. And in a way, they were. Each flash was a bullet, each question a landmine waiting to be stepped on. I turned to the other side of the car and took her hand, helping her out. Alexis stood beside me, perfectly still. Her hand slid into mine right on cue. She smiled, not the nervous kind of smile you’d expect from someone suddenly thrust into a world they didn’t belong to. No, she smiled like she owned the night. Her black dress shimmered under the lights, hugging her curves and baring her shoulders, dipping low across her back with a pattern that seemed drawn on her skin. There was a slit that cut dangerously high up her leg,but somehow, it still looked elegant. Her dark hair was swept into a bun at the base of her neck; she looked like she had stepped straight out of a magazine shoot. Even her makeup was flawless, with
