Chapter 5

Author: Washing Wheat
"What did I lack?" That was Monica's caption for the video.

Ingrid was so furious that she slammed her hand on the table. "This is bullshit! That male intern was only responsible for backend work. He didn't even have access to any project data!"

The head of the PR department was anxiously scratching his head. "Ms. Campbell, public opinion is against us right now. Everyone is accusing us of workplace bullying. Shouldn't we release a statement to clarify the situation?"

I nodded. "A statement is indeed necessary."

But it wasn't going to be a clarification. Instead, it was to announce the lawsuit I had filed against Monica for spreading false information and damaging Rockstone Tech's reputation.

My actions once again enraged the Kovane family.

Soon, Graham contacted the TV station and arranged a live confrontation. He asked if I had the guts to show up.

I was about to agree when Milo hurriedly stopped me. "Don't, Rachel! He's already contacted tons of media outlets and paid off the host and guests for this live broadcast.

"They've even arranged the entire script. The moment you show up, smear articles are destined to flood the internet!"

I listened quietly and only asked him, "Can you get control of the live broadcast feed?"

He instinctively nodded. "I can, but—"

"That's all I need."

Immediately, I texted Graham back. "See you there."

After putting down my phone, I walked into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. The woman staring back at me wore a dark gray tailored suit. Her back was straight, her posture unwavering.

From the night Mom died a tragic death to this very day, I had waited 20 years for this very moment.

I looked at my reflection and whispered, "Mom, the day has finally come."

The live broadcast was scheduled for 8:00 pm three days later.

When I arrived, Milo was waiting for me at the entrance. He lowered his voice. "The studio is packed. Graham invited more than 20 media outlets. His people filled the entire front row.

"The host is Eric Stone. He's worked with Kovane Group for years. Are you sure you want to go in?"

"I'm already here," I answered. "Might as well, right?"

Milo looked at me for a second and didn't say anything else. He simply squeezed my hand gently.

When I entered the studio, Graham, Selena, and Monica were already seated across from me. The moment I sat down, Eric turned his attention toward me.

"Ms. Campbell, according to our information, Ms. Kovane performed exceptionally well during her internship at Rockstone Tech. Not only were her results outstanding, but she also led a project that brought substantial profits.

"And yet, at the final stage of the full-time conversion evaluation, you dismissed her without a reason. Could you explain your decision to us?"

Immediately, Monica's eyes turned red. She squeezed out a few perfectly timed tears.

"I… I really don't know what I did wrong. I just wanted to work hard and prove myself. But during my internship, Ms. Campbell constantly made things difficult for me. She even used baseless accusations to attack me."

As soon as she said that, whispers of sympathy spread through the audience.

"What a cruel CEO. She saw how beautiful the young woman was and decided to terrorize her."

"I bet she's jealous that Ms. Kovane is young, talented, and capable. She's nothing but someone who slept her way to the top. Who does she think she is?"

Eric looked pleased with the audience's reaction and passed the microphone toward me. "Ms. Campbell, can you tell us the truth? Or is there something you are unable to reveal to the public?"

Every camera in the studio panned toward me.

For the first time in years, I smiled from the bottom of my heart.Later, I brought Milo to meet Cassandra Miller, who had been Mom's closest friend. After everything happened, she became the woman who raised me as her own.Cassandra looked Milo up and down. Tall, handsome, and unfailingly attentive to me, he couldn't have made a better impression. She smiled so broadly that she could hardly stop. Then she took my hand, her eyes slowly filling with tears. "Jane, your mother is watching over you from above. She can finally rest in peace seeing how happy you are."Indeed, Mom. I finally had a family of my own.Later, while in prison, Graham repeatedly sent word through other people, asking to see me. He said he knew he had been wrong and had regretted everything. He also said he wanted to acknowledge me as his daughter again and make up for all the years we had lost. He insisted that everything had been Selena's fault, that he had been blinded by that vicious woman. He begged me t

The officer spoke solemnly. "Selena Langford, you are suspected of unlawful imprisonment and child abandonment. Please come with us."Selena's legs gave out beneath her, and she collapsed to the floor.Monica threw herself at Selena, wrapping her arms around her as she cried, "You can't arrest my mom! You have no right to do that!"Nobody responded to her.Graham was pulled to his feet and escorted toward the exit. Halfway to the door, he turned back to look at me. His eyes were rimmed red. "Jane, I've always cared about you. You're my daughter…"I turned away, showing him nothing but my back.Milo ran out of the control room and draped his jacket over my shoulders. I pulled it a little tighter around myself and walked out of the studio without looking back.Overnight, the Kovane family crumbled. When the ship went down, the rats fled. All the powerful figures, media outlets, and business partners who had once crowded around them now wanted nothing to do with them.Every membe

"I am the child they kicked out of the family 20 years ago. My mother's name was Dahlia Moone. She was Graham's first wife," I announced to the crowd."20 years ago, she suffered severe bleeding during childbirth, and he transferred all the doctors away to treat Selena's headache. My mother and my unborn brother both died on the delivery table."I took a step forward and looked at Graham, who was sitting helplessly on the floor. "I came back to collect the debt you owe my mom and my brother."The studio fell into complete silence. Every camera flash went off at the same time.Graham sat on the floor, staring up at me. His lips trembled for a long time before he finally spoke. "You… Didn't you run away with some thug?"I froze, then laughed. "I did? Is that what Selena told you?"He snapped his head toward Selena. Her face had gone frighteningly pale, and her eyes darted around awkwardly."You told me she was sent to boarding school, got involved with some delinquents outside the

"Bribery, violence, and misappropriation of company funds…" I slowly stepped in front of Graham and looked at him. "Mr. Kovane, your company has been named an outstanding enterprise year after year. You've received countless awards as an exemplary entrepreneur."But be honest. Have you ever truly had a day with peace of mind in the past 20 years?"He slowly lifted his head, still forcing himself to remain calm.20 years had passed. Graham had aged, but even then, he still wore a look of his usual arrogance."Are you wondering how I got these pieces of evidence?"I leaned down and lowered my voice, making sure only he could hear me. "Do you really think Monica sneaking into my company was because she was capable? The code she copied had a program embedded in it long ago."These pieces of evidence were all copied directly from your own computer, Mr. Kovane. You sent your daughter to infiltrate my company because you wanted to destroy it and take the opportunity to acquire it."But

I instinctively looked across at the Kovanes. Graham and Selena sat on either side of Monica, as if silently shielding their precious daughter. The scene was eerily identical to the day I was kicked out of the Kovane residence 20 years ago. The only difference was that this time, I was no longer alone.I turned my head toward the control room and nodded. The next second, the giant screen in the studio lit up, and everyone went quiet. The footage showed the office area of Rockstone Tech. The timestamp displayed 2:00 am. A sneaky figure appeared in the empty office late at night. It was none other than Monica, who sat across from me, crying pitifully just seconds ago. She skillfully unlocked my computer, plugged in a USB drive, and quickly copied something. After finishing, she carefully deleted the operation records before leaving the company as if nothing had happened. The entire process was captured clearly by a hidden security camera. The studio was eerily silent. Everyone star
