chapter 8

I didn't know how long I had been unconscious. When I woke up, I found myself still connected to a breathing machine.

I tried to move my fingers to wake Mark, who was lying next to my bed. His head weighed heavily on my hand, causing a tingling sensation to spread through my fingers.

"Are you awake? How do you feel? Do you know you went into shock?" Mark asked.

...I was in shock, how would I know?

My attention was drawn to his stubbly chin and bloodshot eyes.

He was nothing like the cool, dignified, and self-assured Mark I knew.

I wanted to speak, but I had no strength left. In the end, I gave up and lay still, letting the doctors and Mark do whatever they needed.
