Chapter 3

Author: Mister Rhapsody
But… Something did not add up! That hand did not look like Wendy's. Was she even strong enough to choke me?

But there had definitely been something wrong with the beer she had given us!

As I tried to decide whether Wendy was the killer, her voice echoed from the darkness. "What are you talking about, Jaina? I woke up because I had to use the bathroom. I was just walking past your bed on my way to the bathroom."

"You're lying! Stop the act, Wendy!" Fiona sounded close to tears. "There was something wrong with that beer you gave us! Tell us the truth! Are you trying to get revenge for Rosa?"

Wendy let out what sounded like an angry laugh. "She thought I was her best friend, and I betrayed her. The only person she hated more than me was Jaina. Why would I want to get revenge for her?"

Jaina scoffed. "You still won't admit it? If I can force that witch Rosa to her death. You think I can't handle you?"

Jaina and Fiona got out of bed and attacked Wendy. Within seconds, all three were fighting together.

I was about to climb down and help when I heard a series of beeps. Someone was entering our door code!

My scalp prickled. Was someone else the culprit all along? Before I could think any further, the door opened.

"Who are you?!"

"Who let you in?! Get out!"

Jaina and the others had noticed the intruder. He answered with a sinister chuckle and attacked.

I heard the sound of a blade sinking into flesh. Wendy screamed and collapsed into a pool of blood. Jaina and Fiona were brutally murdered next.

In less than a minute, he had killed all three of my dorm mates. The air reeked of blood…

But, who was he? How did he know the code to our dorm's digital lock?

Before I could figure it out, he came toward me with his bloody knife.

I shook with fear, my throat too tight to make a sound. I kept shrinking back until I had nowhere left to go.

He extended his hand and grabbed me easily. He was incredibly strong and ruthless. Once he had pinned me down, he drove the knife right into my heart.

I fought with all my strength, fear of dying makes me struggle with all I have. However, the knife sank into me anyway, and the pain clouded my mind.

I tried to reach up and pull off his mask to see his face, but I could not.

All I knew was that he was a man.

His blood-covered hand was the one that had smothered me before. The pain overwhelmed me, and I lost consciousness...

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the afternoon of April thirtieth.

The familiar voice whispered in my ear like a repeating nightmare. "It's your turn."

This time, I grabbed the woman and held on tight. "Who are you? Why am I alive again? Am I stuck in some kind of groundhog day?"

This time, I told the police everything I knew, including my own crimes. I begged them to protect me and told them Michael was going to kill me. If I accepted the punishment I deserved and he had no way to get to me, surely he would let me go? Would that end the cycle of dying and regression? I prayed it would. If this did not end soon, I was going to lose my mind. "Don't worry. You'll be punished for your crimes. We won't let anyone take the law into their own hands!" The officer's firm assurance made me feel a little better. This time, officers guarded my holding cell around the clock. Michael had no way to get to me. I thought my nightmare was finally over. Then, an unbearable pain suddenly tore through my stomach. "The water! There's something wrong with the bottled water!" By the time I realized what had happened, it was too late. I died from the poison regressed yet again. I was going insane. The instant I heard "It's your turn," I lunged at the woman in despera

Before cutting my throat, he narrowed his eyes, savoring what was coming. "Soon, everyone from your dorm will be back together again. You're all going to accompany Rosa in Hell!" I realized that nothing I said would make him let me go. So, I laughed too. The words burst out in despair. "You think you're some kind of hero? "We're not good people, but neither are you! Even the law wouldn't sentence us to death, but you want to kill every last one of us! Even if Jaina and I deserve to die, what about Wendy and Fiona? Jaina threatened them into helping her!" As I finished, Michael cut my throat. Just before I died, I heard him say, "No, no. None of you are just accomplices. All of you have a hand in her death! Why else would Wendy volunteer to die to make up for what she did?" When I opened my eyes again, I was too stunned to think for a long time. Wendy had chosen to die? That explained how Michael knew our door code and why she had drugged our beer! She really had wanted us

As I listened to his side of the story for ten minutes next, I saw a completely different side of him. He said he had always loved Rosa deeply. He could not stand up to Jaina, so he had flattered her without meaning any of it, hoping she would leave Rosa alone eventually. But he had underestimated how distorted Jaina's mind was. Even after he distanced himself from Rosa, Jaina was still jealous and kept harassing her relentlessly. His secret help and encouragement had been the only things keeping Rosa alive. Then, a month earlier, Jaina had arranged for Rosa to be sexually assaulted. Rosa had not been able to take it anymore after that. She had been devastated. She was numb and unresponsive every day, a shell of her former self. Michael had noticed the change in the woman he loved, but no matter how much he asked, she would not tell him about the assault. He had started investigating and spent a month finding out the truth. Thirtieth of April. Five in the evening. He had

Who was it? The killer? How did he find me? "No..." I muttered, reassuring myself. "It has to be a homeless person or someone walking by. It can't be the killer!" I picked up a rock to defend myself, crept to the edge of my hiding place, and peeked out. My blood ran cold the next moment! There he was, walking slowly toward me with a sharp knife. His hoarse voice was cruel, like a hunter toying with prey he had already caught in his trap. "Quinn River… I found you…" My eyes widened in terror as I pulled back under the bridge. I wanted to fight, but I was too scared to lift the rock. It slipped from my hand and landed hard on my foot. I felt nothing. Fear had numbed all my senses. "Michael!" I shouted, my voice hoarse. "Why are you trying to kill me? Are you doing this to get revenge for Rosa? But... But Jaina was the one who drove her to her suicide! I did something wrong, but I can repent! I don't deserve to die!" By the time I finished, Michael was already under the

When I opened my eyes again, I was back just before Rosa's suicide. The strange woman whispered in my ear again. "It's your turn." As soon as she finished, I reached for her mask as fast as I could, but she dodged sideways as though she had expected it. The way she looked at me was filled with scorn. "How many times has it been now?" The third time. But I had confidence that this would be the last. Nothing would happen to me again. I no longer cared who the woman was. I ignored her and headed off campus. I knew who the killer was and how to avoid him. All I had to do was hide until he killed my other dorm mates and the police caught him. Then I would be safe. "Go back!" "Someone has committed suicide, and the campus is now on lockdown! You can come in, but no one's allowed out! Didn't you get the notice?" A security guard stopped me at the campus gates. I was too late again. No matter how much I pleaded, he would not budge. The campus had apparently issued stric

Something about the shape of her face looked familiar, but no matter how hard I glared at her, I could not remember who she was. Her eyes widened above her mask, then filled with mockery. "So, it has started for you?" She knew something! She had to know why I was trapped in this loop! Being murdered twice was more than I could bear. I gritted my teeth and growled, "Who killed me? What do I have to do to stay alive?" She did not answer. Rosa jumped off the building again. The woman looked toward the spot where Rosa had died, smiled, and shook off my grip. She disappeared into the panicked crowd. It took me a long time to calm down. Was she hinting that Rosa was behind my deaths and the time loop? Every time I came back to life, I returned to the moment Rosa died. And whoever kept killing me wanted revenge for Rosa. Two terrifying deaths and another bizarre regression had left me close to breaking down. Nothing mattered except ending the loop and getting my normal life
