Chapter 4

Author: Mister Rhapsody
Something about the shape of her face looked familiar, but no matter how hard I glared at her, I could not remember who she was.

Her eyes widened above her mask, then filled with mockery. "So, it has started for you?"

She knew something! She had to know why I was trapped in this loop!

Being murdered twice was more than I could bear. I gritted my teeth and growled, "Who killed me? What do I have to do to stay alive?"

She did not answer.

Rosa jumped off the building again.

The woman looked toward the spot where Rosa had died, smiled, and shook off my grip. She disappeared into the panicked crowd.

It took me a long time to calm down.

Was she hinting that Rosa was behind my deaths and the time loop? Every time I came back to life, I returned to the moment Rosa died. And whoever kept killing me wanted revenge for Rosa.

Two terrifying deaths and another bizarre regression had left me close to breaking down. Nothing mattered except ending the loop and getting my normal life back.

This time, I told the police everything.

"Jaina drove Rosa to her death. Fiona, Wendy, and I helped her..."

I had not had a choice. My family was barely better off than Rosa's. I had to finish college. How could I face my parents if I did not? If I refused to do what Jaina said, she had plenty of ways to force me to drop out. I had been forced to give in.

Over and over, we had put rats and dead snakes in Rosa's bed and smeared her clothes with foul-smelling chemicals that would not wash out.

She had been too afraid to report us. Jaina knew which hospital her mother was in and had enough influence to arrange a "medical accident" there.

Her mother was the only family she had. Rosa had endured three years of humiliation just to protect her.

But she had refused to fall. She still had excellent grades and held her head high. Her strength only made Jaina hate her more.

Jaina wanted to destroy her.

One rainy night a month earlier, Jaina had hired people to hurt Rosa on her way back to campus from her part-time job. Rosa had returned to the dorm with her clothes in tatters and a vacant stare, barely aware of her surroundings. She had not said another word for the next month.

We had thought she was strong enough to get through it on her own. But without warning, she jumped from the seventh floor...

When I finished, the officer clutched his fists and stared at me with cold disgust. "Do you realize what you've done? An innocent person died because of you!"

I knew.

I also knew they would arrest Jaina soon. Whatever happened to her, her family would take brutal revenge on me. But at the very least, I could save my life. I would be alive.

I could not bear dying horribly over and over again. I could not take this loop anymore...

"It had nothing to do with me! I swear! I hired those men to teach her a lesson. They never sexually assaulted her! Besides, I haven't even bothered her in a month! Why didn't she kill herself then? Why now? Something else made her do it. It had nothing to do with me!" Jaina struggled, but it did no good.

She was handcuffed and put in a police car. Fiona, Wendy, and I were taken to the station for further questioning too.

We were accomplices. Even though we had not directly caused Rosa's death, we were still legally responsible for it and could face prison time and fines.

I had no regrets. All I felt was relief and freedom.

Rosa had not died for nothing. Now that the truth was out, surely the killer would stop trying to get revenge? Besides, I was locked up at the police station. He could not kill me there.

The holding cell was miserable, but I slept soundly.

Suddenly, a sharp click stirred me from sleep and I opened my eyes in grogginess.

Then I jolted fully awake!

He was here!

I recognized his physique! He was the man who had killed me twice! I did not deserve to die! Why did he still want to kill me? How had he gotten into the police station?

There was no time to think and nowhere to hide.

He slammed a heavy, blunt object into the back of my head. I screamed in pain and collapsed. I tried desperately to crawl away by instinct.

But I was still too slow. He straddled me and struck again, and again, and again…

Blood ran down my face, turning everything I could see into red. Just as I was about to pass out, several police officers rushed in.

But… It was too late.

By the time they restrained him, I was barely conscious. All I could see was a document that had fallen to the floor in the struggle.

What I read surprised me.

I finally knew who the culprit was. And I finally knew how to break the loop!

This time, I told the police everything I knew, including my own crimes. I begged them to protect me and told them Michael was going to kill me. If I accepted the punishment I deserved and he had no way to get to me, surely he would let me go? Would that end the cycle of dying and regression? I prayed it would. If this did not end soon, I was going to lose my mind. "Don't worry. You'll be punished for your crimes. We won't let anyone take the law into their own hands!" The officer's firm assurance made me feel a little better. This time, officers guarded my holding cell around the clock. Michael had no way to get to me. I thought my nightmare was finally over. Then, an unbearable pain suddenly tore through my stomach. "The water! There's something wrong with the bottled water!" By the time I realized what had happened, it was too late. I died from the poison regressed yet again. I was going insane. The instant I heard "It's your turn," I lunged at the woman in despera

Before cutting my throat, he narrowed his eyes, savoring what was coming. "Soon, everyone from your dorm will be back together again. You're all going to accompany Rosa in Hell!" I realized that nothing I said would make him let me go. So, I laughed too. The words burst out in despair. "You think you're some kind of hero? "We're not good people, but neither are you! Even the law wouldn't sentence us to death, but you want to kill every last one of us! Even if Jaina and I deserve to die, what about Wendy and Fiona? Jaina threatened them into helping her!" As I finished, Michael cut my throat. Just before I died, I heard him say, "No, no. None of you are just accomplices. All of you have a hand in her death! Why else would Wendy volunteer to die to make up for what she did?" When I opened my eyes again, I was too stunned to think for a long time. Wendy had chosen to die? That explained how Michael knew our door code and why she had drugged our beer! She really had wanted us

As I listened to his side of the story for ten minutes next, I saw a completely different side of him. He said he had always loved Rosa deeply. He could not stand up to Jaina, so he had flattered her without meaning any of it, hoping she would leave Rosa alone eventually. But he had underestimated how distorted Jaina's mind was. Even after he distanced himself from Rosa, Jaina was still jealous and kept harassing her relentlessly. His secret help and encouragement had been the only things keeping Rosa alive. Then, a month earlier, Jaina had arranged for Rosa to be sexually assaulted. Rosa had not been able to take it anymore after that. She had been devastated. She was numb and unresponsive every day, a shell of her former self. Michael had noticed the change in the woman he loved, but no matter how much he asked, she would not tell him about the assault. He had started investigating and spent a month finding out the truth. Thirtieth of April. Five in the evening. He had

Who was it? The killer? How did he find me? "No..." I muttered, reassuring myself. "It has to be a homeless person or someone walking by. It can't be the killer!" I picked up a rock to defend myself, crept to the edge of my hiding place, and peeked out. My blood ran cold the next moment! There he was, walking slowly toward me with a sharp knife. His hoarse voice was cruel, like a hunter toying with prey he had already caught in his trap. "Quinn River… I found you…" My eyes widened in terror as I pulled back under the bridge. I wanted to fight, but I was too scared to lift the rock. It slipped from my hand and landed hard on my foot. I felt nothing. Fear had numbed all my senses. "Michael!" I shouted, my voice hoarse. "Why are you trying to kill me? Are you doing this to get revenge for Rosa? But... But Jaina was the one who drove her to her suicide! I did something wrong, but I can repent! I don't deserve to die!" By the time I finished, Michael was already under the

When I opened my eyes again, I was back just before Rosa's suicide. The strange woman whispered in my ear again. "It's your turn." As soon as she finished, I reached for her mask as fast as I could, but she dodged sideways as though she had expected it. The way she looked at me was filled with scorn. "How many times has it been now?" The third time. But I had confidence that this would be the last. Nothing would happen to me again. I no longer cared who the woman was. I ignored her and headed off campus. I knew who the killer was and how to avoid him. All I had to do was hide until he killed my other dorm mates and the police caught him. Then I would be safe. "Go back!" "Someone has committed suicide, and the campus is now on lockdown! You can come in, but no one's allowed out! Didn't you get the notice?" A security guard stopped me at the campus gates. I was too late again. No matter how much I pleaded, he would not budge. The campus had apparently issued stric
