Nathan is my best friend but I swear if he doesn’t shut the hell up, I just might gut him. “how many times do I have to tell you, no damned pickles in my bloody burgers!” I screeched while spitting the half chewed burger back into the brown lunch bag. At least he had the decency to look terrified, “oh come on, it can’t possibly be that bad” he muttered while obviously trying to hold in his laughter, his brown eyes crinkling at the sides, the moron had done it on purpose. “is this payback? For disappearing to Hawaii? Because trust me you took the worst routes by messing with my burger, would you blame me for attempting to get a natural tan for myself? You have it oh so naturally” I muttered under my breathe.
It was a sunny afternoon and I had decided to invite Nathan over to the park during lunch break, considering he hadn’t seen me since I went to Hawaii on a whim. To say he was upset was an understatement, he was outright pissed, let’s just say the burger has made us even. “you’re mean” I mumbled in annoyance. Turning to face him, I noticed his expression had turned serious and I knew that shit was about to get real “you need to call your father Devonne, I’d hate to have to block his number on your behalf” he said, his mouth drawn into a thin line, he’s upset “he wants me to bring Bri and Josh to him on my next visit and I can’t do that, my mother is gonna shit a brick if she finds out” “you could easily just tell them not to tell her, I think they’re old enough to keep one secret from their mother, especially since it concerns their father” “you say it like its so easy, you underestimate my mother if you think she isn’t keeping tabs on her children”
Our voices had risen at this point, but I couldn’t bring myself to give a damn “you and I know very well you’re just making excuses, they’ll have to know about it at some point, give the man hat he wants before he does something stupid like showing up at your office, or worse at the house” he said, a little too calmly for comfort “well……” I started before the ringing of my cell phone interrupted me, I stared at the caller ID and frowned before excusing myself to take the call.
“Sansa? What’s wrong? Its still lunch break and I’m pretty sure I don’t have any meetings or appointments for the next hour or so…..” “Devonne I think you need to see this, someone is here to see you” she said, cutting me off, she sounded distressed, which is very much unlike Sansa even when she was just a newbie who’d just started working for me.
I went back to where I’d left Nathan so I could tell him that I had to go, only to find his seat empty. I frowned again, today has just become automatically weird. Driving at breakneck speed, I arrived at the office just in time for the clock to signal the end of lunch break. I didn’t bother stopping by Sansa’s table before barging through the doors of my office, knowing she’d follow. What I saw, or rather who, I saw sitting behind my desk, on my chair, had my hands going slack at my sides.
After I’d mastered myself enough to conceal my shock, I scowled at him “what are you doing here dad?” I asked him, my whole body trembling from restraint, he was gonna get me in trouble, judging by the smirk he was sporting, he already knew that. “that’s no way to talk to your father, Devonne,” I’d always liked the way my name rolled off his tongue in that rich Italian accent, but right now I was too angry to care or even notice. And that was when I noticed the next thing that tilted my whole world upside down.

Third person POV
Alejandro had just returned from his late nights at work again and she had decided that she had had enough, the whistling kettle on the stove was loud enough to raise the dead, but all she could focus on,…… all she could remember, was those glowing green eyes, his eyes, the eyes of a monster. She finally turned off the stove and reached for the blowtorch she had kept hidden in one of the kitchen drawers, he’d tried to explain, she had pretended to understand, but what she had seen was against everything she had ever believed was possible. if he was exhausted as she’d gambled he’d be, then she should succeed. She had already sent the children to their aunt “for a sleepover” she had said, only one had objected, one who looked just like him. Devonne. She thought better and grabbed the lighter instead, she went outside to the garage. She didn’t let herself feel remorse as she flicked the lighter open and set the gas drenched building ablaze.
Back to present day
DEVONNE’S POV
My father’s face and skin was as smooth as a baby’s. With all those burn injuries gone, our resemblance was even more striking, the green eyes and the defined jawline, the dark silky hair, the only thing I was missing apparently was his height. I swallowed audibly as he stood slowly and gracefully from the seat.
“I finally agreed to get that plastic surgery and to put the horrible past between me and your mother behind us. You would’ve known that if you had just picked up your phone or at least come to see me” he said, fixing his gaze on me. I had the vague sense of another person entering the office.
I had no words for what I was looking at.
“there is a whole lot that you do not know Devonne, time is not on our side, I’d prefer it if you let me see my children. Now”
Josh’s school had no qualms letting him off for the rest of the day, and Brianna hadn’t gone back to New York just yet, so I called them both in to the office, this was going to be ugly……..and I couldn’t do a darn thing about it.
“call your mother too, I think its about time she explains to me why exactly it is she’s been trying to get married without properly divorcing me first” my father added after I was done making arrangements for my siblings to come.
“like hell I’d do anything like that, if you want to set my building ablaze with family issues, bear it in mind that I will not allow it, you guys will take it up somewhere else!” I said in almost one breathe.
“tsk tsk tsk, why Devonne, you could give your mother a run for her money when it comes to your tempers” he chuckled before adding “since you’re not going to call her, I’ll just do it myself” he had his phone to his ear before I could do so much as to protest.
************
I paced in my office, unable to sit still, my father on the other hand and….. Nathan just sat calmly, watching me move back and forth in front of them. How could they be so relaxed, this is a disaster waiting to happen. How Nathan had known to come here was just beyond me. Few minutes after I had arrived here, I gave Sansa an order to evacuate the building, just in case my mother was considering starting a fire again, for unknown reasons.
My mother was the first to arrive, I watched as she paused, and then watched as her face crumpled and she tried to walk back out the door, but was interrupted by the shocked expression on the faces of Brianna and Josh behind her. I, just masked my face with cool indifference before kicking off my shoes and lying down on one of the couches in the office, using a cushion to keep my head elevated, I laced my fingers behind my head. Well… we might as well get this all over with.
“Hello Jenna” my father said, a little too softly for my liking, he was fighting a smile and I was a little concerned as to why he was happy to see the woman who had put him in the hospital for several years and made him isolated for years after that.“Alejandro” my mother whispered, her voice lost due to some emotion I couldn’t quite place.Bri and Josh had broken out of their trance and Had gone to tackle our father in what I’d describe as a bone crushing hug. Bri was sobbing, while Josh just gripped my father’s suit like he could just disappear anytime soon. The guilt hit me almost immediately, they hadn’t seen him in twelve whole years but I shoved it down, down to where I could easily forget about its existence, surely if they were going to be upset about my role in all this, then they might as well shove our mother off a cliff.“what happened Dad?” “where have you been?” they asked almost at the same timeOn second thought……….. “Sansa? Please get me some a burger and a coke plea
It was completely dark outside when I finally woke up in my office sweating profusely, feta gripping my heart like a vice. I wondered if this was how I was going to die, the pain was gone but it felt like it was still there, hiding, waiting. I crawled towards the bed in my office chambers and promptly passed out again. I woke up early and started getting ready for the work day. Considering most of the clothes in my closet were actually just blazers, I took out a white one and smoothed it down with one hand. Paired with a skirt, just how I like it. I grinned at the mirror before wrapping my hair into a neat bun at the top of my head and applying some lip gloss. Just as I was stepping into my office, my phone rang, startling me with how loud it was, it clattered to the ground from my hand. I hurriedly picked it up and answered the call, “Hello Devonne” “Who’s this?” I asked one hand holding the phone to my ear and the other putting my table in order. “It’s Edward” “Errrrrr hi” I s
“Aren’t you curious even in the slightest?” Mela asked again, it’s been three days and I’d managed to master the art of ignoring her. At this rate, I could just go home. But with what she was ranting on and on about a full moon, I didn’t want to risk it. I remember my curiosity getting the better of me last night and I had tried to google lycanthropy but soon remembered that there was no internet this deep in the woods. I’ve also managed to talk to it……. her, whatever the fuck she claimed to be, without muttering to myself like a crazy person. “I could tell you a lot of things that you do not know……”“You will not annoy me, you will not talk to me…… you are going to leave me alone” I said, not bothering to stop myself from saying it out loud. “I need to prepare you for the shift! Stop being so stubborn!” She screeched and blinding pain shot throughout my body. “Shit!” I exclaimed. I got up and walked into the kitchen, because for some reason, I was famished even though I just a
DEVONNE’S POV“What are you doing there?!” Came Nathan’s voice through the phone, I moved the phone away from my ear for a bit. Putting it back, I said “Hello Nathan, it’s very nice to hear from you, also, how many times have I told you not to track me?” A sigh on the other end, the sound of something crashing and then…. “it’s for your safety, now please tell me where you are, and what you’re doing in the middle of nowhere” “I’m at the top of a mountain, took me all day to climb it, and it was just me too, well…. me and Mela” my eyes widened at my unexpected confession about Mela. “Who the fuck’s Mela?” Nathan asked and I knew he was scowling and probably running his other hand through his brown, now black hair (I bullied him into dying it)“Just a friend I made up in my days of loneliness” that earned a derisive laugh from Mela herself “You will come back home tomorrow, Devonne, I’m not telling you a second time, you know very well that whenever you decide to go MIA, I automatic
Waking up without remembering how I actually fell asleep seems to be the new normal. I moved my head and winced, well…. Add having a headache and a mouth that tastes like ash, not that I’d ever tasted ash anyway. My phone was ringing, was that my phone ringing? Why was it ringing? Where was it? I spied it across the room, next to my closet. I dove for it before the call could end“hello?” gosh, even my voice sounded like shit “Devonne, you have a meeting with…….” “ahhhhhh!!!!”“Devonne, I know you’re about to ask me to clear your schedule, but hear me out first” I paused “go on” I later grumbled, I knew it had to be important though, Sansa had enough sense not to bother me when I didn’t want to be bothered. Its annoying, I’m the boss, no? I shouldn’t be working, but no, the business owners of Cali had decided I had to work to get anything out of them, piece of shit, uptight, tight asses.“………..so that’s basically it…..what do you say? its a pretty good offer, think we should take i
“Thanks to the work force you sent, work has been going smoothly, but someone has been sabotaging the productions” Edward began almost immediately we got into my office.I looked towards the streets and watched as Bob got into his car and drove off “well I guess we know who it is already, I’m so sorry about this, I promise I’ll take care of it” he nodded and was about leaving, “is that all you came to tell me?” I asked, bending my head to the side as I studied him, “it may be my company’s money in this, but it is also the labor of your men” he just said and walked out, his shoulders tight, well that was awkward, he could’ve just told me that over the phone. I sighed and perched on the side of my table, the last few weeks have been undeniably annoying, I don’t even know how to feel about that. But one thing was clear, my mother had two options, its either she works out her twisted marriage to my father or she fixes her taste in men, I think its about time I laid it all out for her.I
Arriving at my apartment, I was already exhausted, Tanya had a way of draining me without actually trying. The dress that Sansa had picked out was a quite simple and beautiful, it had a note attached, “this was designed by one of your designers at the fashion house” Bridget MatthewsIt was a lilac dress with spaghetti straps, one that clung to my body except for the thigh high slit running up the left leg, and below the dress……I laughed “what do you know? There’s a cloak in here” fur lined and …….a deep purple. I made a quick work of putting it on, curling my hair, I didn’t bother with make-up. At least I’ll look colorful.Stepping out of the limo, I was nearly blinded by camera flashes, at least they had the sense not to shove a mic in my face, because I may have accepted to come for this opening, but it didn’t mean I knew shit about it. That’s how t
I wonder, if Edward is gonna answer me if I ask him what Bob meant, because that statement has been bugging me. I would just write it off as nothing but its just not working that way at all.My phone was ringing again, one day im gonna have to throw that thing in the ocean and live a life away from technology. “oh Devonne, you didn’t forget my birthday was next week now did you?”“no, no no, of course not my beloved Tanya, in fact I just got off the phone with the guy for the fabrics” I said through my teeth, “oh did you now? And beloved?, that’s new” the last thing I heard before she hung up was her laughter, it sounded evil. I shoved more ice cream into my mouth, from my peripheral vision, I could see that Nathan just got out of the bathroom. “was that Tanya on the phone?” he asked and I glared at him “oh you mean your crazy ex girlfriend who’s hell bent on making my life miserable ,then yes, yes that was Tanya” “oh come on, she used to be a sweet thing, we’re still very good frie
