LOGINSophia's POV
I woke up the next day feeling weak and drained. The pain in my heart was too much for me to bear. I still can't believe that I had lost my child, my sister was in prison, and the world believed I was dead. They didn't question the lies, they didn't wait for the truth, they simply decided. And in that moment, I realized justice doesn't exist for people who have no power. I understood that I couldn't fight them alone, not with a ruined name. If I want them to pay, I need to become someone they couldn't silence. What I needed was power, and if marrying Marcus was the price of that power, then I would pay it. I turned my head slightly and saw Marcus sleeping beside me, his head resting awkwardly on the edge of the bed. I gently adjusted it so he could sleep more comfortably. He caught my hand before I could pull away. "You're awake," He said slowly. He straightened up and said, "Do you feel okay? Should I call the doctor?" I looked at him without saying a word. Even though he had the same face as the man who ruined me, I still don't know why I felt safe with him. "I'll get married to you," I said, my voice steady as I met his gaze. "What?" He asked, with shock flashing across his face. "I said," I repeated calmly, "let's get married." The silence after my words stretched between us. Marcus didn't speak, he just watched me. "You don't have to get married to me if you don't want to," he finally said. "I want to," I replied calmly. "But only on my terms." His jaw tightened slightly. "Then tell me your conditions." I took a slow breath, steadying myself. This wasn't a proposal, it was a contract. "First," I said, my voice firm, "this marriage is strictly business, no love and no romance should come between us. We'll live as husband and wife in name only. We'll share a last name, power, and common enemy, nothing else.” Something flickered in his eyes, but he didn't interrupt, he just nodded. "Secondly," I continued, "you'll never touch me, unless I allow you to. Thirdly, my past stays mine, your past stays yours, nobody should dig into anybody's past." I said. "Okay," he responded immediately. "There's more," I added sadly. "You need to protect my sister, I don't care what it'll cost you, but you need to, she's the only one I have left, if anything happens to her this marriage means nothing." He leaned forward, "I already plan to protect her, you've my word." I studied his face for a long moment, searching for deception, pity or control, but I found none. "Lastly," I said quietly, "if either of us starts to feel something we shouldn't feel, we walk away from it." He swallowed hard, before saying, "agreed.” I exhaled slowly. "Then we're cleared." Marcus stood up and extended a handshake. "Business partner," he said. I placed my hand in his, "business partner," I echoed. ****** A week passed quietly. I stared at my reflection in the mirror across the room. The bandages are gone now, leaving a face that's not entirely mine. My cheekbone is a little higher and the curve on my jaw is now sharper. My chest hurts every time I think of Alessia behind bars. But pain wasn't the same thing as regret. If Alessia was free, Mattoe wouldn't hesitate to finish her. He'd silence her the way he tried to silence me. Marcus had promised me one thing, that she's safe as long as she's in custody, no one will touch her. And for the first time since everything shattered I believed someone, not because he asked me to, but because he's proven it. This wasn't the life I wanted for my sister, but it wasn't a life sentence either. I would carry this guilt if it meant she'll stay alive and be safe, till I figure out how to destroy the people who put her there. The door opened softly behind me, but I didn't turn. "Marcus," I said quietly. "I don't want that name anymore. They buried Sophia already, and I can't fight them bearing that name again. I finally turned to face him. "If I'm going to walk back into that world, "it won't be as the woman they broke." I said. He went into a prolong silence before he finally spoke. "What name do u want?" He asked gently. I looked back at the mirror. At the stranger staring calmly back at me. "From today, Sophia is dead.” I said, my voice firm and final. “My name is now Astrid.” I exhaled slowly, like I'd been holding my breath for years. Marcus, tilted his head towards me, “No problem if that's what you want. Shall we?” He asked, extending his hand. "Or we'll be late for our wedding." I took his hand, and we left the room together. Adrian was already waiting for us outside. We got into the car and drove straight to the courthouse. The ceremony took less than ten minutes, names were spoken, papers were signed and a stamp sealed it all. We collected our marriage certificate, and by the time we walked out, I was no longer Sophia. I was now Astrid Vitale.Sophia's POV The doctor looked at me for a long time and then he spoke.“He's out of danger now.”For a moment I didn't understand his words.“He lost a significant amount of blood,” the doctor continued, “but we're able to stabilize him. The surgery was successful.”My knees almost gave up beneath me.Thank God Marcus is alive. The breath I released felt like it had been trapped in my lungs for hours.“He's not awake yet,” the doctor added gently. “But for now he's stable.”“Can I see him,” I asked, my voice barely audible.“You can see him in the next few minutes,” he said.I nodded but tears were already sliding down my face. I didn't even try to stop them.Beside me, Harris exhaled deeply, rubbing a hand over his face like the weight of the world had just been lifted. But mine hadn't, because Nathaniel was still out there.I wiped my tears and straightened, as my anger returned. That's when Harris said quietly, “I'll speak to the administration. Marcus's identity has to be confid
Marcus’s POVA knife went into my stomach and for a second I didn't feel it.My grip loosened around Nathaniel's shirt as something warm spread across my abdomen. The room started spinning. Then he stabbed me again. The second thrust forced the air out of my lungs. My body gave up beneath him.He pushed me and I hit the floor hard. Then, Nathaniel disappears through the backdoor.I tried to move, but pain shot through me so hard that I gasped for breath. My fingers pressed against my stomach instinctively. When I lifted my hand, it was covered in blood, too much blood. At first, I heard the sirens from a distance, then it grew closer. My vision blurred but I forced myself to stay awake.Boots thundered into the house.“Marcus!” Harris' voice called as his heavy steps rushed towards me.“Jesus–get EMS now!” He barked. His hands were on me, pressing it hard against my wound. It hurt so badly that I nearly blacked out.“Stay with me,” Harris said sharply, gripping my shoulder. “Stay with
Nathaniel's POV I pushed him off my body weakly and quickly slipped through the back door.I walked tiredly without direction until I reached a secluded building where I could hide as I struggled to catch my breath.I slipped my hand into my pocket to bring my phone, it wasn't there.I checked the other pocket. Nothing. That's when it hit me that I must have left it at the house while struggling with Marcus.“Shit!” I cursed under my breath, dragging my hand over my face. How was Sophia and Marcus alive? The question kept pounding in my head.I killed both of them with my hands.I need to inform Magaret and Mattoe about this.I was still lost in thoughts when a man walked into the building. He froze the moment he saw me. His eyes widened in shock. Then I heard what was playing on his phone.{Podcaster: “breaking update, sources confirm Nathaniel Rowe stabbed a man in his house tonight and fled the scene….”}I gritted my teeth as the man slowly began stepping back.I moved towards hi
Nathaniel's POVSmoke filled the room, curling slowly toward the ceiling.A glass of wine was in my hand, and a cigarette burned between my fingers. My mind was clouded with the thoughts of who could be behind the stolen evidence. But one thing was sure, the person behind it was someone who knows me.My phone rang sharply, bringing me out of my thoughts. The number wasn't saved, but I know who it was.I almost ignored it, but I picked up after the second ring.“Speak,” I said coldly.“Evidence was brought to the station not quite long.”“What type?”“Voice recorder and videos of old cases we had buried.”The cigarette Ash dropped onto the floor.“And?”“The lab result we switched, they know it was tempered with.”My jaw tightened, but my voice didn't change.“Which detective is the evidence handed over to, and who are the people who delivered it?” I asked.“Harris is the one, and you know how tough he's, he doesn't take bribe. And the people, I'll send their pictures to you.”I walked
Marcus's POVI woke before the alarm rang, and for a moment, I didn’t move. I just lay there, staring at Astrid’s face beside me. The morning light slipped through the curtains, resting softly on her skin. She looked too innocent and peaceful for everything circling around us.“I pray this ends soon,” I murmured under my breath.I leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.I was about to get up when her fingers curled into the edge of my shirt, holding me there.A small smile tugged at my lips. Even in sleep, she was still holding onto me.I carefully removed her fingers and stood, watching to make sure I hadn’t woken her. She shifted slightly but didn’t open her eyes.I went into the bathroom, brushed quickly, and let the cold water hit my face longer than necessary. When I was done, I changed into something simple and headed downstairs to make breakfast.By the time I finished making breakfast, the smell of toast and eggs filled the kitchen.I heard her footsteps before
Mattoe's POV The air in the living room changed in a split second.Vivienne’s breath hitched beside me but I didn’t turn immediately.“What exactly,” my mother repeated, her heels clicking slowly against the marble floor as she descended, “did the two of you overhear?”I finally looked up.She stood halfway down the stairs with one hand resting lightly on the rail and her expression was calm.“It’s nothing important, Mom,” I said, but my voice betrayed me. It trembled slightly.A small smile curved on her lips.“That’s interesting,” she replied softly.I don’t know where Vivienne found the courage, but she exploded.“We overheard your conversation with Nathaniel!”The room went silent instantly. For a moment, my mother didn’t move. Then she continued descending down the stairs, slowly.“Why should I suffer for the crimes you committed?” Vivienne shouted, her voice shaking now. “Why should I stop chasing my future because of you?”“That’s enough, Vivienne,” I snapped, turning toward
