Lucia’s POV

I woke up spluttering as water was poured on my face.

Sitting up, I stared into a pair of unfamiliar forest green eyes. “Who the fuck are you?” I snapped.

His face twisted in disgust. “The proper thing to say would be thank you.”

I tugged at the ropes around my torso. “Kidnappers these days must be rather interesting. Being mannered and everything.”

He scoffed, straightening. “Last time I am saving the life of one of your kind.”

Your kind?

The hairs on the back of my neck stood straight. “What are you?”

“The Ghost of Christmas Past,” he replied sarcastically, rolling what looked like a ball of dirt between his palms. “Open your mouth.”

“What the hell are you doing?” I snapped, jerking in my chair.

“Open your fucking mouth,” he said, prying my jaw open. “Before I rip it off.”

He fixed me in place and forced the ball of dirt down my throat. I swallowed and immediately started trying to make myself gag.

“Who sent you to kill me?” I asked, wondering how long it would take the poison to work and if I would be able to negotiate my freedom before then. “How much did they pay you?”

“You overestimate yourself,” he said, wiping his hands on a rag.

After shuffling around the room for a few minutes, he turned on the lights.

I looked around. It was a cabin.

“Do you live here?” I asked.

“Are you always this stupid?” he retorted.

I waited for a minute, watching him as he went about what looked like a nightly routine.

“When are you going to let me go home?” I asked again, this time more politely.

It would not be in my best interest to keep being rude when I did not know where I was.

He walked past me and snapped off my restraints. “You can leave whenever you want, but a friendly warning: the wolves are roaming the forest, looking for the young lady who injured their Alpha.”

As if on cue, a loud howl echoed in the night, followed by a harmony of other howls.

My hands trembled. I was not prepared at all to face so many.

“How far are we from South City?” I asked.

“By plane, train or bus?” he asked, shaving his face like we were not in imminent danger.

“Please,” I said, hating how desperate my voice sounded. “My brother and bodyguards could be looking for me right now. If they roam into the forest, they could be in danger.”

His hand froze. “How old is your brother?”

“Sixteen…why?”

“They would probably take him to be a plaything for their warriors, instead of killing him. That was what they did to Alicia.”

His voice was dark, heavy. It must have been a trick of the light but I could see gold specks in his eyes.

“Who is Alicia?”

“My little sister,” he replied curtly. “Don’t worry. She is dead.”

“Shit.” I let out a choked sob, not even sure why I was crying. “Do you have my gun? I need my weapons.”

He looked at me through the mirror. “On the table.”

As I turned to the table, I paused. There was an intricately carved bow leaning against it and a pack of arrows beside.

“You were the one who saved me from Reese,” I stated. “Thank you.”

He did not respond, going back to his shaving. I was about to leave the house when I paused, glancing back at him.

“Hey, can you…can you join me?”

His brow raised at my words. My hand clenched around the doorknob as I awaited his reply. “You have nothing I need.”

Living in a cabin in the middle of the woods meant that he was self-sufficient. If he were not, he would have sought out one of the human settlements.

But…

“How about the heads of as many wolves as you want?” I said. “If you want, I can tie them up on a board and let you use them as target practice.”

I gestured to my gun. “You have seen what I can do.”

He scanned me from top to bottom and then turned back to the mirror. I did not expect him to agree instantly anyway but the seed had been planted.

“South City is in that direction,” he said, pointing to the right.

So this was the neutral territory between South City and the other human settlements. He might know a bit about them.

“I will be back later with questions,” I said, heading into the night.

“Sure thing,” he muttered in response.

I started with a slow jog, vigilant of my environment as I moved. The leaves crunching under my feet seemed to echo in the quiet night.

Fifteen minutes had passed when I came across the first wolf. We made eye contact and before he pounced on me, I jumped on the tree nearest to me, climbing onto the highest branch I could manage.

As he threw his head back to howl, I shot him right in the throat.

His eyes bugged as he fell backwards onto the damp floor. The rest of the wolves had heard the gun go off and were now bounding in my direction at full speed.

I used the few seconds I had to take stock.

Two anti-lycantrope smoke bombs. Two injections. Eight bullets. At least two dozen wolves.

I was pretty much screwed.

“Lucia Everton!” Kathy yelled over the howls of her pack members.

“I didn’t know the slut went out on assassin missions. What? You need this many people to kill one human?”

Kathy paused, her words catching in her throat at my insult.

“Be kind to me, okay?” I said, aiming my first bomb right at her. “I am a human after all.”

As the bomb detonated, all hell broke loose.

Ryan’s POVDaniel appeared on the compound at four am with the excitement of a person who did not quite know what they signed up for yet.“We are doing a lap around the city.”“Eh?”“Let’s go,” I said, jogging ahead of him. After the first half mile, I had to slow down for Daniel to catch up.“Wait. Wait a minute,” Daniel said, panting. “Rest break.”It was just fifteen minutes and I was starting to regret agreeing to this.“Is this how you plan to impress your wife?” I asked.Daniel flinched. “That’s not fair…”“Life is not fair. If you do not learn to protect yourself now, the day will come when you will watch helplessly as a knife is stabbed into your chest.”I took a step closer to him. “That is what weakness does to you, Daniel.”Daniel gulped, straightening. I looked him over once. “Good. Now, let us keep going.”We ran for another half hour, Daniel powering through on sheer grit.“Let's stop here for today,” I said.Daniel protested, though he swayed on his feet. “I can do more

Lucia’s POV“Cole, do you have any idea how we can reach a country in Europe? Portugal?”Cole did not stop rummaging through my fridge. He visited my house so often that I started to wonder if the monsters in the forest between the South and West were exaggerated.“Europe? Why?”Suddenly, he paused. “Portugal is the entry point to Europe. I have seen it on the maps. Are you planning to sail there?”Twenty ships were double the number of ships Reese had in my past life.Even if half of the ships sank, that was still ten left. Enough to hold thousands of wolves.First, the pill, and now this. Reese must have found himself a damn psychic.“The wolves should be headed for Europe in a few months, once their ships are ready,” I explained. “Their first checkpoint will be Portugal.”Cain set down his food, his eyes glossy as he thought. “They are going to slam the doors in our faces. No one is going to believe a story about werewolves.”I was about to speak when he added. “Not unless we force

Lucia’s POVThe city’s petition appeared on my desk early the next morning. The first signature at the top was Edward Webb.“The city’s council is asking me to come in for an audit,” I said, twirling in my chair. “They must have been waiting for me to make a mistake all this time.”In my past life, the moment I agreed to marry Reese, the council deposed me and replaced me with Daniel as a puppet leader.“If you go, they will rip you alive,” Peter said.“If I don’t go, they will try to do it anyway.” I got to my feet. “Get Daniel for me.”Daniel walked into the room fifteen minutes later, annoyance radiating off of him.“You have a little something,” I said, pointing to the lipstick stain on his neck.He continued glaring at me. “What is it?”“The city council has summoned me and you are coming with me,” I said, my tone leaving no room for arguments.Daniel grumbled, sulking as he followed me into the car.The council building was in the very center of the city. A mistake that I planne

Lucia’s POVThe news of Daniel’s marriage spread through the city like wildfire. As they were talking about Amos, they were talking about Daniel in the same sentence.“Why do I need a stylist?” Daniel protested as the stylist powdered something onto his face. “I am just going to school.”I stood in the doorway. “You are the new face of our city. Your image is everything.”Daniel looked at me through the mirror, a thoughtful expression on his face. “You are becoming more like Mum.”Yes, I got the idea from her to do this. She had done the same thing with me when I was fourteen. It also let me transition smoothly into becoming the leader of the city. But there was no need to burden Daniel with that yet.“How do I look?” he asked, turning back and forth in front of the mirror.“Like a man ready to make me proud…but no pressure,” I said, dumping massive pressure on his shoulders. “Now, where is Jodie?”I walked to her room and she was hiding in the closet, her stylists urging her to come

Lucia’s POVPeter caught me as I stumbled into the main part of the church, dragging Amos’ body behind me.“Why are you limping?” he asked, scanning my body.“Fear. I’ll be fine but we need to get all of them out of here now!”“Why–”There was a loud slam against the walls downstairs. “The wyverns,” Ryan muttered.“Move it,” Peter yelled to his men. “Empty the building.”“Ryan!” I yelled, darting up another set of stairs to where I knew Amos’ office was. “Take the bedroom.”He had the better instinct to find things if they were hidden. Amos’ office was pristine. My eyes raked the shelves, scanning for anything that looked the slightest bit suspicious.“Lucia!” Peter yelled through the church.“Office!” Peter appeared in the doorway. “Come help me move this thing.”Despite his protests, he helped me move the shelves. Folders were tucked behind them. “Lucia, we do not have time for this.”“Less talking and more packing,” I snapped at him. A screech echoed in the building.Peter’s interc

  • Killed By My Alpha, Reborn For Revenge   Chapter 20

Lucia’s POVPeter looked like he wanted to pull his hair out of his head.“How do you accidentally create toxic fumes?”I paced excitedly in my office. “I was trying to create poison so of course, half of the things I use are poisonous.”I bit down on my fingernails. Would it work on the wolves? I needed a sure way to try it out.“Amos,” Ryan reminded me.I snapped my fingers, grabbing the half-completed poison and the extra ingredient to make it gaseous. “I will be back in a bit.”Peter blocked my way before I could slip out the door. “What is it?”“And if it does not work?” he asked, worry creasing the space between his brows.I would swear that Daniel and I gave Peter half the worry lines on his face. The other half came from my mum.“You can come with me,” I conceded.“Too suspicious,” Ryan said curtly, kicking off the wall to come to me.I quirked my brow at Peter. He nodded once, angry, bending to whisper something low in Ryan’s ears.Ryan could not care less, following me out t
