Chapter 6

Thirty minutes had passed since Josephine walked inside Lucas office with Michael and she now sit on a chair with her back leaned against it and her legs crossed. Opposite to where she was sitting was Michael, his eyes on her and Josephine felt uncomfortable. She had adjusted herself so many times within those minutes and she can’t seem to stop moving her body from time to time as wild thoughts crossed her mind.

She heard her stomach grumble and she groaned, rubbing it with a tired expression on her face. Raising her eyes to look at Michael, she deliberated on either to ask him if there was anything she could eat or not and she set her lips into a thin line.

Seeing her expression, Michael asked, “Is there anything you want to ask me?”

“Huh?” Josephine raised her eyes and said, “Oh that, I was just wondering if you could please order something for me?” she said with doubts in her voice. “As you can see, I am very hungry and your boss hasn’t been kind enough to even offer me water. He wouldn’t even let me go home,” Josephine grumbled and readjusted herself on the chair.

“But my boss didn’t tell me to give you anything,” Michael said and Josephine felt infuriated almost immediately.

“Do you have to do everything your boss says?” she raised her voice at him before calming herself down. “Is this how you babysit someone? You need to make sure I am okay and well fed. If I die, I won’t spare any one of you. I will haunt you till you end up in the grave and I won’t go easy on you even in the afterlife.”

“Wait a minute,” Michael suddenly said as he leaned forward on the chair he sat. “Are you not the lady who is supposed to get married the next week but got replaced by another lady?”

Josephine blinked at his words and her jaw dropped. How did he know when she has never seen him before now and she doubt if he has seen her before, or did the news spread? It was just yesterday that the incident happened so how come he knows? She thought before Michael’s words brought her back to reality.

“You are the one, right? You must have felt so bad,” he said with pity in his voice.

Josephine found her voice and she asked him, “Is your boss aware of that? And how did you know about that?”

“I doubt if my boss is aware even though I heard it as a rumor. I have seen you somewhere before with a man. You once came to one of our offices, looking for a job but there was no available position at that time. I think that was when I saw you. Not long after that, I saw that same man with another lady in our jewelry company. He was checking out a ring...”

That must have been her engagement ring, thought Josephine and she wondered if Maya had chosen it for her, until she heard Michael say,

“...but he didn’t purchase it. I think I saw them take a picture of it before returning it back,” he said and Josephine frown her brows a little.

“Honestly,” Michael continued, “ever since I saw that man, I have known him to be a player. But it is good that you dumped him before it is too late. It is just sad that someone like you had to fall victim to his game. Your relationship would not have last long or have a happy ending if you ended up marrying him anyway.”

Josephine stared at Michael as he continued to talk but she was not listening anymore. She thought back on the day she met Brian. She couldn’t deny the fact that she liked him and even though she tried not to be too forward with her feelings, Maya had persuaded her and pushed her feelings out for her. But how could she not know that Maya always does anything and everything if she wants to have something to herself? She has always been that way. Even the first guy she liked while they were still at school, soon after she confessed her feelings to her, Maya had started going out with him and Josephine had withdrew her feelings back because she considered Maya to be her sister.

Now that she came to think of it, Maya had always got what she wanted while hurting her feelings. At least, she was the one who introduced Brian to her in the first place before they started dating. She must have wanted him to herself and used her as the bait to get him. She had been too blinded to notice.

Josephine looked away from Michael who had stopped talking when he noticed that she was deep in thoughts and she brought out her phone. She would call the wedding planner and ask for a refund. She was about to power it on when she stopped.

How could she ask for a refund when the wedding is in a week’s time?

Josephine put the phone back and leaned back on the chair while facing the other side. All she wants is to travel out of the country and settle somewhere else where no one will be able to reach her and she didn’t care if they think she is dead.

Hours passed and Josephine glanced at the door several times to see if Lucas would come inside any time but he didn’t and soon, Michael left the office after informing her that the boss wants him to run an errand for him, leaving only her in the office.

Josephine yawned and sighed after hours of waiting in the empty office and she felt her body starting to turn weak due to hunger. She soon got bored and after some minutes, she fell asleep on the chair.

Shortly after she fell asleep, Lucas entered the office but Josephine was too deep in the sleep to hear a sound.

Lucas moved to where she was and stared at her face, a smile creeping up at the corner of his lips. He brought his hand forward and made it hover above her head before pushing her hair backwards.

A knock was soon heard on the door and he moved away from her. The door opened and Michael walked in with a small bag in his hand.

“Here is what you requested,” he said and handed the bag to Lucas which he received and he dismissed him immediately.

Lucas walked over to his table and sat on his comfy chair. He unzipped the bag and brought out two small blood bags before relaxing his back and crossing his legs on the table.

He tore the lid away and pulled his head back a bit before downing the contents in less than ten seconds. He did the same to the second and later disposed them in his trash bin beside where he sat.

He brought out his tongue and ran it across his fangs before his eyes changed to dark red as they stared at where Josephine was, fast asleep.

Lucas watched Josephine with humor in his eyes as he listened to her heartbeat which was beating at the normal rate. He thought of ways to instill fear into her mind by manipulating her sleep and he smiled at the thought. He was still patient with her because he has all the time in the world and he would take his time, slowly.

She was bold enough to step foot into his bar when she could have got killed and her body would have been disposed. Also, the audacity she has to spill his drink on the white rug. Not that he minded about the rug being stained but it was his drink which he had planned on taking earlier in the morning that had made him want to make her pay.

Even if he let her go, it means she would have to die because compelling her would not be enough for him as it could break anytime. Aside from that, he can feel how she was hurting inside even though she tried to put up a bold face. Lucas does not take pleasure in people’s pain but still, it was fun to watch how everything will unfold.

When Josephine opened her eyes after she felt that the sleep was enough, she saw Lucas who seems to be asleep as his eyes were closed and his back leaned on the chair with his legs crossed on the table.

She wondered when he came inside and seeing that he was asleep, she sensed that he must have been in the office for some time now. She checked her phone for the time and she saw that it was past six in the evening. Her eyes raised a bit in surprise as she could not believe that time would have gone so fast. She looked at Lucas again and seeing him not awake yet, she thought if it was her lucky chance to escape from him.

She pursed her lips together and watched him for some seconds before slowly raising her body from the chair. She clutched her bag to herself and started to tiptoe towards the door, making sure that she made no sound to wake him up.

When Josephine was a feet away from the door, she let out a satisfied sigh and stretched her hand, but before she could reach for the handle, she heard a voice behind her which sent cold shivers down her spine.
