Chapter 5

Josephine knew he was daring her and she knows that he would not hand it over to her easily. She just has to play along and then when she gets her hand on the ring, she would escape and go far away, where he would not be able to reach her.

She turned her head away and stared ahead of her. They soon arrived at their destination and the driver stopped the car. He got down from it and went to open the door for Lucas.

“Don’t step out of the car,” he said while staring into her eyes. It was more like a warning and Josephine found herself nodding.

She watched him step out of the car and then the door was shut. From the inside, she could see through the glass, a lady who appeared from inside the house and she saw Lucas walk up to her before giving her a kiss on the cheek.

She looks too young to be his girlfriend, Josephine thought as she watch them and then she saw him give her the parcel. The lady jumped on him, hugging him and then they had small talks before she waved at him and walked back inside the house.

When he came back to sit in the car, Josephine commented, “Your girlfriend is quite young and beautiful. Why haven’t I seen her on TV yet?”

She looked at him, waiting for him to respond and his lips pulled into a smile before she heard him say, “She is my daughter.”

If Josephine was drinking or eating anything at the moment, she would have choked on it. She looked at him with raised brows and then, she asked him, “You are married?”

It seems like there was more to his life that people did not know about, thought Josephine as she awaited his response.

Lucas chuckled and responded, “What makes you think I am?”

A small frown appeared on Josephine’s face before she answered, “You said that lady is your daughter barely five seconds ago.”

“Does calling her my daughter mean I am married?” Lucas questioned her and Josephine almost glared at him for replying all her questions with a question.

Sullivan soon coughed to gain his master’s attention and he asked, “Where should I go next?”

“Go to the nearest restaurant and get me toast with a diet coke. After that, take me to my office. I have a meeting by 1 p.m.”

“Yes sir,” Sullivan responded and started the car before driving on the road.

He couldn’t possibly be ordering for himself alone...or could he? Josephine thought and she felt her stomach grumbling silently. She had not had any food since last night and she had left the house having no money on her. Not that she had the money anyway, as it had been used to pay for her wedding.

Sullivan soon stopped in front of a restaurant and went in to get what his master had ordered, leaving only the two in the car.

Josephine cleared her throat and was about to say something when Lucas chanced her.

“Won’t your husband get mad at you if he sees us together?”

“I don’t have...a husband,” Josephine replied and blinked at the thought of it.

“I was talking about your fiancé. He was supposed to be your husband, right?” Lucas asked.

Being not in the mood to answer questions related to her personal life, she said to him, “Can we not talk about any of that?”

“Okay good,” Lucas replied with a smile and leaned forward to her, holding her chin up with his thumb and staring into her hazel eyes.

Josephine felt blood rush up her face at his sudden behavior and she felt her heart beating at a fast pace.

“Wha-what are you doing?” she questioned him with dread in her wide eyes.

“What I usually do,” came his blunt response.

“What do you usually do?” Josephine asked feeling confused. With the way he leaned closer to her, she wasn’t sure if he wanted to kiss her or to take a bite from her.

“You said you don’t have a husband so I don’t think he would mind, would he?” he asked and lowered his eyes before moving his head to the side of her neck a bit.

Josephine’s body went stiff and she shut her eyes tight with her hands clenched into a fist on her thigh. It was just a bite and it would be over soon, she assured herself and prepared for whatever was going to happen.

Three seconds passed and nothing happened. Josephine then heard a soft chuckle from behind her ear and she opened her eyes. Lucas pulled away from her and sat back in his seat, pretending like nothing happened and Josephine was about to scold him when Sullivan entered the car.

He handed the food which was packed in a brown cover and Lucas collected it. Sullivan started the car and Lucas wasted no time in removing the covers before stuffing the toast in his mouth.

After what transpired between them barely a minute ago, Josephine didn’t think she would be able to ask him why he didn’t get her own so she just stared out of the window and sat still.

They finally arrived at the company and Sullivan went to get the door for Lucas.

“Come with me,” Lucas said to Josephine and she turned her head to look at him but before she could say anything, Lucas got down and the door was shut.

Sullivan was about to get the door for her when she opened it and hit his side. Josephine got down from the car and saw the driver’s body bent a bit while holding his tummy. When he raised his head to look at her, she saw his face contoured in pain.

“Oh my! I am so sorry,” Josephine quickly apologized to him and tried to touch him but Sullivan quickly raised his hand, stopping her.

“It is fine,” he managed to say and he closed the door before moving to the side.

Josephine felt sorry for him but she knew there was nothing she could do. She looked ahead of her and saw Lucas standing, waiting for her and she moved her feet to meet him before they started walking inside the company.

Immediately they stepped inside, Lucas was greeted by several people who were at the down floor and Josephine saw the way he didn’t respond but instead, he continued walking. The stares of the people directed at her didn’t go unnoticed and she clutched her purse tightly. Her legs started to turn weak as she was nervous. She had never walked next to someone like Lucas Gray and the feeling was getting the best of her, but in another way.

When they got to the front of the elevator, Lucas pushed the button and the door opened. He stepped inside and Josephine dared to breathe a sigh of relief as she was away from the people staring at her. She was about to step inside when her knees gave way but before she could go down, Lucas wrapped his arm around her body such that her front was pushed against his chest, closing the gap between them.

Josephine raised her eyes to meet his green ones and at that moment, she heard someone call;

“Boss!”

She looked at the front of the elevator and saw a young man who had glasses on with a backpack, running towards them, but before he could get inside the elevator, the door closed.

Now that they were alone, she realized the position they were in and she immediately regained her balance before stepping away from him, his hand sliding away from her waist. She gulped down nothing and pushed the hairs that had come to settle on her face behind her ear.

“Thank you,” she thanked him and saw him gave a nod before staring ahead of him.

Josephine wondered if something had got him upset from the moment he stepped down from the car because his mood had changed since that time and she wondered if it was because of her. Not like she begged him to make her walk next to him anyway, she thought and discarded it.

The elevator stopped and the door opened. Lucas got out first, with Josephine following closely behind and she took her time to stare around while also making sure she didn’t lag behind.

“It’s so beautiful,” Josephine muttered to herself and just then, she bumped into someone at the front.

“Ow!” she yelped and rubbed her forehead before raising her eyes to see that it was Lucas.

He was about to say something when someone interrupted him,

“Boss!”

Josephine moved her eyes to see the young man from earlier who was running to catch up with the elevator.

Is he is PA? Josephine thought as she stared at the man who now came to meet Lucas.

He breathed out and smiled before greeting him with his head bowed, “Good afternoon Mr. Gray. You have a meeting with the board now.”

Lucas gave him a knock on his head before he could raise it up and he squealed, rubbing his head.

“As you can see, I am already there. Did you just want to waste my time further? And not to talk of the fact that you are just coming, late,” Lucas scolded him and Josephine saw the young man push his glasses up.

“Sorry boss,” he quickly apologized and his eyes met briefly with Josephine before quickly looking away.

Josephine found him to be sweet and his face looks like a baby to her but she wondered if he was another vampire like Lucas, hiding behind that cute innocent face.

“I won’t spare you the next time,” Lucas said to him before looking at Josephine. “This is my guest,” he said, referring to her and she saw the man nod before waving his hand at her.

“Hello, I am Michael. It’s nice to meet...Ah!” Lucas gripped his hand tightly when he stretched it towards Josephine.

“You are wasting more time Michael. I want you to take her to my office and babysit her till I return.”

Josephine frown her brows immediately on hearing his words and she asked him, “Whom are you babysitting?”

Lucas released his grip from Michael and turned his body to face Josephine. “Unless you want to roam around and eventually find a way to escape from me which I would not attempt to do if I were you. Allow him to look after you while I am in the meeting. Michael is a sweet young man and I am sure you will come to like him,” he said and gave a bright smile which Josephine found to be weird.

Lucas turned back to look at Michael before turning to leave, walking in the opposite direction, leaving the two alone.

Josephine fumed and tapped her heel on the ground furiously. She felt like yelling at his back as he was leaving but this was a company where lots of people are and she could not bring herself to do that.

“Ma’am?” Michael’s voice made her turn to look at him and she raised a brow at him.

“Do I look like a ma’am to you?” she glared at him and he straightened his back.

“Please, follow me,” he said and started walking but stopped and turned back when he saw that she was not following him.

“Are you really going to babysit me? Do you realize I am an adult? Are you going to listen to what your boss really said?” Josephine questioned him with a glare.

Michael looked around, making sure that no one was nearby and he said with a serious expression, “If I don’t do what he asked me, I will lose my job but not only that. If you fail to follow me, he might send you to the dungeon and torture you till you learn to follow his orders. I don’t want that for both of us, so please, follow quietly.”

“Are you threatening me right now?” Josephine asked and scoffed, but seeing him not respond and instead, he started walking, Josephine hesitated a bit before moving her feet.

“Sweet young man my foot!” she muttered and glared at his back while also cursing her fate.
