Vera

My gaze moved between Ethan and Vanessa, waiting for one of them to look ashamed. Neither did. That was the first thing that truly frightened me—not the affair, It was the complete absence of panic.

People who got caught were supposed to panic. They were supposed to scramble for excuses, pull their clothes straight, and tell ridiculous lies that no one believed.

“Ethan.” My voice sounded thin and distant, like it belonged to someone else.

I stared at him and felt something ugly growing inside my chest. Six years of anniversaries and shared vacations. Six years of memorizing how he took his coffee.

“Say something,” I said.

But Ethan sighed—actually sighed. The sound landed harder than a slap.

“What exactly would you like me to say, Vera?”

For a moment I simply looked at him, wondering if I was having some sort of breakdown. Maybe I had finally worked too much or inhaled something strange at the gala, because there was no possible way the man standing in front of me could be my husband. My husband would be horrified. This man looked mildly annoyed.

“What would I like you to say?” I repeated. A sharp laugh escaped me. “Oh, I don’t know. Let’s start simple. Maybe explain why you’re in a hotel suite with my sister when we're supposed to be at the damn gala downstairs. Then we can move on to whether I should be upset before or after the family holidays.”

Vanessa winced. Good. At least one of us still possessed functioning nerves.

“I can explain it,” she said weakly.

“Wonderful.” I turned toward her. “I’ve always loved explanations. Especially the kind that begin with finding your tongue down my husband’s throat.”

“Vera—”

“No, seriously. Take your time. I would love to hear how this betrayal happened completely by accident.”

Her face crumpled. Ethan walked calmly to the minibar. That was when I realized something was deeply wrong. Because men who feared losing their wives did not stop for whiskey. Men who knew the game was already over did.

The ice clinked softly inside the glass. “It’s been three years,” Ethan said.

Everything inside me went still. Three years. Half my marriage. I stared at him, then laughed—not because anything was funny, but because if I didn’t laugh, I might start screaming.

“Three years? That’s impressive. Most people can’t commit to a gym membership for that long.”

Neither of them smiled. I looked at Vanessa. “You’ve been sleeping with my husband for three years?” Tears burned behind my eyes. “What did you do? Put reminders in your calendar? Schedule romantic deceit between brunch and yoga?”

Her gaze dropped to the floor. “I didn’t mean for it to happen.”

A bitter laugh escaped me. “That sentence covers exactly one kiss, Vanessa. Not three years.”

I had spent years defending her. And apparently while I was doing all that, she was sleeping with my husband.

“I love him,” she whispered.

The words hit me harder than I expected—not because I believed them, but because she believed she had the right to say them to me, here, like her feelings were somehow relevant.

I turned toward Ethan and waited. I waited for him to tell her she was confused, to deny everything, to show me one tiny piece of the man I thought I married.

Instead, he took a slow sip of whiskey and nodded. “I love her.”

The room tilted slightly at his words. There it was—the funeral service for my marriage which had just been reduced to four words and a glass of whiskey.

I looked around the suite, suddenly noticing details I hadn’t before: the expensive artwork on the walls, the champagne chilling in a silver bucket near the couch, the second suitcase standing beside the bedroom door.

The realization settled over me like ice water. Everything in this room belonged to people who expected to spend the night together—my husband and my stepsister. God, I was standing in the middle of somebody else’s love story. Unfortunately, I was also funding it.

I wiped at my eyes and laughed softly.

“Vera—”

“No.” I held up a hand. “You don’t get to Vera me now.”

For the first time since entering the room, I looked directly at her as just another woman and not my sister. “What exactly was the plan here?” I asked. “Were you eventually going to tell me? Send me a sympathy card? Maybe a fruit basket?”

I laughed again. “You slept with my husband for three years. You looked me in the eye every holiday knowing that truth.”

Her face crumpled.

“You let me help you pick dresses for dates. You let me cry on your shoulder when I thought my marriage was struggling.”

A tear slipped down my cheek. “I spent my entire life defending you,” I said quietly. “Do you know that? Every time somebody or grandfather warned me about you, I defended you.”

“I never asked you to.”

That landed hard and I clenched my fists. Then a horrible thought struck me so suddenly it made my stomach twist.

I slowly turned toward Ethan. He was watching me with a calm expression.

None of this felt emotional to him, not the betrayal and definitely not me.

Then my mind landed on the documents he's been asking me to sign. Over the years Ethan had brought home stacks of documents—business forms, authorization requests. I had trusted him. Why wouldn’t I? He was my husband. The man knew my coffee order and my allergies. Apparently he also knew exactly how trusting I was.

I stared at him. “Those papers.”

His expression didn’t change. “What papers?”

The casual answer made my skin crawl. “The documents you’ve been bringing home for years. The authorization forms, the voting approvals, the trust amendments, the property documents.”

A smile slowly spread across his face. The sight made me feel physically ill.

“What about them?”

My heart began hammering. I suddenly didn’t want the answer, but I already knew there was one. “Tell me the truth.”

VeraThe words echoed in my head until they became unbearable. “What does that mean?”No one answered. The silence stretched on as I looked from one man to the next. These were the three rulers of the Central North Territories. News channels called them kings, warlords, and worse, but never merciful. Yet they had saved me. How? And why?“I asked you a question,” I said.Jude stood with one hand in the pocket of his black trousers, watching me with an unreadable expression. “You shouldn’t be standing.”I blinked. “What?”“You shouldn’t be standing,” he repeated.“I don’t care. I asked why I’m here.”Heat rose to my face when he stayed silent. The blond man leaning against the wall folded his arms and gave a small smile. “I like her.”Jude didn’t glance at him. “I didn’t ask.”“That’s exactly why I said it.” The blond man pushed off the wall and looked straight at me. “I expected tears. I expected screaming. I expected gratitude. I didn’t expect attitude.”I stared at him. “And who ex

VeraPain had a name.It tore through my body so violently that my eyes flew open on a ragged gasp. Air rushed into my lungs, as if breathing had become something my body no longer knew how to do. For several seconds I couldn’t move. I simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling above me, blinking slowly while my heart pounded against my ribs. It was white and smooth, nothing like the rough concrete of that rooftop or the endless gray sky I had been falling toward.I swallowed, and the movement sent another wave of pain racing through my throat and chest. My eyes darted around the room. It was a large bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows covered by dark curtains, cream-colored walls, and a cold fireplace beneath a framed landscape painting. Everything looked expensive. My gaze dropped to the thick blanket covering me, then to the white bandages wrapped around both arms. My right wrist was splinted and several fingers were wrapped individually. I lifted my hand instinctively. The motio

I suddenly didn’t want the answer, but I already knew there was one. “Tell me the truth.”“Why?”The question stunned me. “Because I’m your wife.”“No.” The answer came immediately, without hesitation. My chest tightened. “No?”“You aren’t obligated to know anything now Vera.”The room seemed to tilt as I turned to Ethan. “Then what were they?”His smile widened. “The documents?”“Yes the documents.”“They weren’t authorization forms.” For a moment I forgot how to breathe. “They were transfer agreements.”The words hit me like a physical blow. I shook my head. “No, you can't be serious.”“You signed them.”I stared at him as the room felt smaller and the air thinner. Every instinct screamed that something terrible was happening. “What did I sign?”His eyes never left mine. “You signed away voting control of Carter Holdings. You signed away majority ownership. You signed away trust access.”“No.” I barely recognized my own voice. Because he had to be lyi

VeraI could forgive the cheating. It was the murder that felt excessive.Affairs happen. People fall out of love. Hearts break every day. There are lawyers, divorce papers, and expensive therapy sessions for things like that. Most reasonable people don't solve marital problems by throwing their wives off forty-story buildings. But then again, my husband had never been particularly reasonable. The funny thing is, if someone had asked me that morning whether my marriage was happy, I would have said yes without hesitation. Not because it was perfect—perfect marriages didn't exist. But because I loved him. And when you love someone long enough, you ignore all the red flags.Looking back, I can pinpoint a hundred moments when I should have known. The warning signs weren't hidden. I simply trusted the wrong people. The rain had started sometime that afternoon, drumming steadily against the windows of our penthouse while I stood in front of the bedroom mirror fastening a pair of diamond ear
