Vera

My heart began hammering. I suddenly didn’t want the answer, but I already knew there was one. “Tell me the truth.”

“Why?”

The question stunned me. “Because I’m your wife.”

“No.” The answer came immediately, without hesitation.

My chest tightened. “No?”

“You aren’t obligated to know anything now Vera.”

The room seemed to tilt as I turned to Ethan. “Then what were they?”

His smile widened. “The documents?”

“Yes the documents.”

“They weren’t authorization forms.” For a moment I forgot how to breathe. “They were transfer agreements.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. I shook my head. “No, you can't be serious.”

“You signed them.”

I stared at him as the room felt smaller and the air thinner.

Every instinct screamed that something terrible was happening. “What did I sign?”

His eyes never left mine. “You signed away voting control of Carter Holdings. You signed away majority ownership. You signed away trust access.”

“No.” I barely recognized my own voice. Because he had to be lying. I wasn’t stupid. I read contracts. I attended board meetings. I knew business. Didn’t I?

Then why couldn’t I remember reading any of those clauses? Because I never looked. Because Ethan had always handled the details. Because I trusted him. Because I was an idiot.

A broken laugh escaped me. “You know what’s embarrassing? I actually thought I was the smart one in this marriage. You managed to rob me blind while convincing me I was helping.”

“Money changes people.”

“No.” My voice hardened. “It reveals who they truly are.”

Something dark flickered across his face. Apparently monsters didn’t enjoy mirrors. I swallowed hard as a realization registered inside me, a realization so horrifying I almost refused to acknowledge it.

If I signed everything over, then why was I here? Who sent me that photo?

Ethan stopped smiling and suddenly I understood. It was not the affair. The real plan was me. I was the final step.

I took a step backward. “Ethan.”

He took a step forward and my heartbeat exploded.

His expression was terrifyingly calm, then he said “Because dead wives don’t contest paperwork.”

The words landed with brutal finality. For a second everything inside me went completely still. I thought about the first day we met, our wedding, every anniversary and I realized that the man standing in front of me right now had never existed. I had built him from wishful thinking and expensive suits.

Then survival instincts took over. I turned and ran. The movement happened before I consciously decided to do it. One second I was standing there; the next I was sprinting toward the door. I heard Ethan curse behind me—the first emotional reaction he had shown all night.

I burst into the hallway, my heels slamming against polished floors. The elevator was too far. The emergency exit stood closer. I shoved through the door and nearly stumbled into the stairwell. My lungs burned. My dress tangled around my legs. I ripped off one shoe, then the other. They bounced down the stairs behind me. I didn’t stop.

I climbed flight after flight. Rain hammered somewhere above. My chest felt ready to explode.

Then I reached the final door and shoved it open and cold air crashed into me. The rooftop stretched before me beneath a violent 2026 spring storm. Rain poured from the sky in silver sheets as wind whipped through my hair.

For one dizzy second I thought I might survive. For one stupid, hopeful second I thought maybe there would be another exit, another staircase—anything. Instead there was only concrete, rain, and a forty-story drop.

The rooftop door opened behind me. I turned and saw Ethan stepped outside with water soaked his suit immediately. His dark hair clung to his forehead. He looked almost cinematic—the kind of man women wrote novels about. Funny how important details get left out.

I backed away. “Ethan, please.” My voice shook.

But he kept walking. “You shouldn’t have ran.”

“You already won. You have the company. You have the money. You have Vanessa.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

His expression hardened. “Because you’re a problem.”

The simplicity of the answer horrified me. I wasn’t a person to him anymore. I was an obstacle. A loose end.

I kept backing away. The edge was somewhere behind me. I could feel it. I didn’t dare look. “Ethan, listen to yourself. You can still stop.”

“No.”

“You don’t have to do this.”

“Yes, I do.” His voice never cracked, never showed the slightest trace of uncertainty. That frightened me more than rage ever could.

“You should’ve accepted the affair and walked out than running. You should’ve filed for divorce. You should’ve left quietly”

I stared at him in disbelief. “That’s your fucking defense? You're scared of what I'll do the moment I left that room?”

“It’s the truth.”

“No.” A bitter laugh escaped me. “The truth is that you’re a coward. The truth is that you stole from me because you couldn’t build your own empire. The truth is that you’re standing here preparing to murder your wife because you’re terrified somebody might discover who you really are.”

Something dangerous flashed across his face.

My entire body trembled. The edge of the rooftop was only a few feet behind me. I didn't dare look. I didn't need to.

Ethan stopped just inches away. For one horrible second, I thought he might change his mind. For one pathetic second, I looked into his face and searched for the man I had loved—the man who didn't exist, the man who had never existed.

Then Ethan lifted both hands and shoved me. Hard.

The force slammed into my chest—not a tap, not an accident, but a deliberate, violent, cruel act. His palms struck me with enough power to send my entire body backward.

I gasped as my heels slipped against the rain-slick concrete. For one horrifying second, I lost balance. My arms flailed desperately, instinctively, trying to grab something—anything. But there was nothing.

The edge hit the backs of my legs and my stomach dropped, my body tilted backward and I watched Ethan standing, watching with a look of absolute certainty on his face, as though he already considered me dead.

Then the rooftop vanished, and I was falling—

VeraThe words echoed in my head until they became unbearable. “What does that mean?”No one answered. The silence stretched on as I looked from one man to the next. These were the three rulers of the Central North Territories. News channels called them kings, warlords, and worse, but never merciful. Yet they had saved me. How? And why?“I asked you a question,” I said.Jude stood with one hand in the pocket of his black trousers, watching me with an unreadable expression. “You shouldn’t be standing.”I blinked. “What?”“You shouldn’t be standing,” he repeated.“I don’t care. I asked why I’m here.”Heat rose to my face when he stayed silent. The blond man leaning against the wall folded his arms and gave a small smile. “I like her.”Jude didn’t glance at him. “I didn’t ask.”“That’s exactly why I said it.” The blond man pushed off the wall and looked straight at me. “I expected tears. I expected screaming. I expected gratitude. I didn’t expect attitude.”I stared at him. “And who ex

VeraPain had a name.It tore through my body so violently that my eyes flew open on a ragged gasp. Air rushed into my lungs, as if breathing had become something my body no longer knew how to do. For several seconds I couldn’t move. I simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling above me, blinking slowly while my heart pounded against my ribs. It was white and smooth, nothing like the rough concrete of that rooftop or the endless gray sky I had been falling toward.I swallowed, and the movement sent another wave of pain racing through my throat and chest. My eyes darted around the room. It was a large bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows covered by dark curtains, cream-colored walls, and a cold fireplace beneath a framed landscape painting. Everything looked expensive. My gaze dropped to the thick blanket covering me, then to the white bandages wrapped around both arms. My right wrist was splinted and several fingers were wrapped individually. I lifted my hand instinctively. The motio

VeraMy gaze moved between Ethan and Vanessa, waiting for one of them to look ashamed. Neither did. That was the first thing that truly frightened me—not the affair, It was the complete absence of panic.People who got caught were supposed to panic. They were supposed to scramble for excuses, pull their clothes straight, and tell ridiculous lies that no one believed. “Ethan.” My voice sounded thin and distant, like it belonged to someone else. I stared at him and felt something ugly growing inside my chest. Six years of anniversaries and shared vacations. Six years of memorizing how he took his coffee. “Say something,” I said. But Ethan sighed—actually sighed. The sound landed harder than a slap. “What exactly would you like me to say, Vera?”For a moment I simply looked at him, wondering if I was having some sort of breakdown. Maybe I had finally worked too much or inhaled something strange at the gala, because there was no possible way the man standing in front of me could be my

VeraI could forgive the cheating. It was the murder that felt excessive.Affairs happen. People fall out of love. Hearts break every day. There are lawyers, divorce papers, and expensive therapy sessions for things like that. Most reasonable people don't solve marital problems by throwing their wives off forty-story buildings. But then again, my husband had never been particularly reasonable. The funny thing is, if someone had asked me that morning whether my marriage was happy, I would have said yes without hesitation. Not because it was perfect—perfect marriages didn't exist. But because I loved him. And when you love someone long enough, you ignore all the red flags.Looking back, I can pinpoint a hundred moments when I should have known. The warning signs weren't hidden. I simply trusted the wrong people. The rain had started sometime that afternoon, drumming steadily against the windows of our penthouse while I stood in front of the bedroom mirror fastening a pair of diamond ear
