The thread wasn't cut. I knew that because my wolf told me so.

"Breathe," Kael said, low and rough, in the back of my skull. "She's not dead. Feel it."

I stood at the tower window with my hands braced on the stone, gasping. Kael was a big, old, gray wolf with gold in his eyes, built like a mountain and about as talkative. He had spoken to me only a handful of times in ten years, short and blunt, and every night since her eighteenth birthday he had howled her name while I held the leash.

Jason didn't run to his mother. He stood very still with Marta's blood drying on his sleeves while Vivienne walked toward him through the torchlight. The wolves in the tunnel pressed back against the walls to let her pass. She stopped a few feet away, her hands open at her sides, the way you hold them when you approach something that might bolt."Jason," she said again."Don't." His voice was hoarse and flat. "Just answer one thing. Is it true? What's in that note?""Yes."One word. It dropped into the tunnel like a stone, and somebody behind me let out a breath.Jason nodded slowly, as if she had told him the time. Then he turned and looked at me."Not to me," he said. "I don't want to hear it. Tell her."He walked away. Kenneth took a step after him, and Jason said, without turning, "Not you." Kenneth stopped as if he'd been struck. The wolves parted, and the dark swallowed Jason.Vivienne watched him go. She didn't cry. She looked like a woman who had spent six years protecting one

Everyone in that tunnel was looking at Marta, except the man she had named.Kenneth stood a few steps off with his raw, bloody hands hanging at his sides. His face had gone the color of ash."Kenneth?" Jason's voice was barely there. He was still kneeling beside Marta's body. "What did she mean?""Alpha, I...""She said 'him.' She looked right at you."Kenneth's mouth opened. Nothing came out. His hands closed into fists, and in the silence that followed, I heard Alaric draw a slow, careful breath beside me."Say it," Alaric said quietly. "Whatever it is, say it now. Not later."Kenneth dropped to his knees. He didn't look at Jason. He looked at me."Nine days before the attack, Marta came to find me," he said hoarsely. "She said you were pregnant, Cassandra. She said you hadn't told anyone, and she was afraid, because she'd seen strange men near the healer center. She wanted a guard on you. Quietly. Without the Alpha being told yet, because it wasn't her news to share."I stared at h

I tasted blood, and it wasn't his.At the last second, with my teeth already pressed against his skin, I had clamped down on my own tongue, hard enough that pain exploded white behind my eyes. The Hollow's voice sputtered like a candle in a gust. My canines slid back. I tore my head away and gasped."Cass!" Alaric's hands were on my face. "What did you do?""Bit myself." I spat red onto the stone. It hissed where it landed, and the nearest line of the ring flickered. "You said it was a lie. I believed you.""You stupid, brave..." His voice broke. He pulled my head against his chest, and I felt him shaking from head to foot. "I thought I'd lost you.""Not yet."Inside my skull, the Hollow made a soft, disgusted sound. "Coward," it whispered. "You will be hungrier tomorrow.""I'm here," Catherine said, and I almost sobbed at the sound of her. "I couldn't reach you until you hurt. I'm sorry. I'm here."The light had dimmed, just a little. The pulses came slower now, like a tired heart. M

The rings under our feet were counting something, and I was almost sure it was us.Each pulse came a little brighter than the last. White light crawled up out of the carved lines in slow waves, and every time it reached my ankles, the crescent on my neck answered with a pulse of its own."Alaric." I tried to step back. His arms didn't loosen, and neither did the floor. My boots wouldn't leave the stone. "I can't move.""Neither can I." His voice was hoarse, and his eyes had gone pale gold, almost silver. He was staring at the two circles cut into the floor, and the color was draining out of his face. "Cass. I know this pattern.""From where?""The ledger. My father drew it." He swallowed. "Two rings. The outer one is for the vessel. The inner one is the threshold, and the mate stands in it."I looked down. We were both inside the inner ring, pressed together so tightly I could feel his heart through my ribs."There was more," he said. "I read it in the tower and never got the chance t

My sister was humming when I woke up the second time.It was a slow, tuneless little hum, the kind a person makes when she is bored and waiting. I lay on cold stone with my cheek against the grit and listened to it for a long moment before I understood that I wasn't dreaming. Then I reached for Catherine, and there was nothing there. Not silence. A wall. Soft and thick, like cotton packed into my ears. I could feel her on the other side, pressing, but I couldn't hear a word. The bond to Alaric was gone too, and the place where it should have been was a smooth, cold hollow under my ribs. The first time, the wall had cracked. I had shoved one warning through the gap, and something had laughed, and the wall had slammed shut, and I had gone under again. I had no idea whether the warning had landed.I lifted my right hand. A band of dull gray metal circled my wrist, and where it touched my skin, the flesh had gone numb."Moon-iron," Grace said. "Don't bother."She sat on a stone bench agai

Not cut." His voice dropped. "Like a hand over a mouth. Someone is holding it shut."I was out the door before he finished. The climb down the ridge took four minutes and felt like four hours. The wolfsbane dragged at every step. Kael pushed against my ribs, begging to shift, and I told him no. The poison would only get us killed halfway down."She chose us twice with her body," he said. "In the yard. In the lamplight.""I know.""Don't lose her now."I reached the healer hous
