Leila stared at her phone, the headline glaring back at her. Her head was blank, Her heart raced as she skimmed the article, reading every word. Blurry photos of her and Gavin leaving the afterparty together filled the screen. It was only a matter of time before someone figured out that she was the one in the pictures. One showed Gavin’s hand resting on her lower back; another caught them stepping into the elevator.

Her voice was barely a whisper. “This can’t be happening.”

Gavin, now fully dressed in dark slacks and a crisp white shirt, stepped closer and plucked the phone from her trembling hands. He scanned the article, his jaw tightening with every line.

Leila ran her hands through her hair, “And Adele… oh my God, what if she sees this?”

Gavin’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Adele and I have an understanding,” he said, his tone clipped. “She knows how the media operates.”

Leila blinked at him, incredulous. “An understanding? Gavin, they’re calling me your mistress!”

He held up a hand, silencing her. “Calm down. We’ll handle it.“I’ll handle the press.”

“How?” she demanded. “What are you going to say? That we didn’t…” She trailed off

Gavin’s eyes held hers. “I’ll say whatever I need to. You’re my employee, and it’s my responsibility to protect you.”

Before Leila could respond, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. He glanced at the screen and cursed under his breath. “It’s Armstrong,” he said. “He’s probably seen the article.”

Leila felt her stomach turn. “Great. Just great.”

He answered the call, his tone professional. “Armstrong… Yes, I’ve seen it. No, there’s nothing to worry about. The article is baseless… Yes, I’ll issue a statement.”

As he spoke, Leila backed away, her anxiety level kept going up. She couldn’t be here when this all blew up. She needed to think

“I need to go,” she said abruptly, grabbing her bag.

Gavin ended the call and turned to her. “Wait”

“No,” she interrupted, her voice firm despite the tears threatening to spill. “I shouldn’t have come to the gala, and I definitely shouldn’t have…” She shook her head, unable to finish the thought. “This was a mistake. All of it.”

Gavin’s expression darkened, but he didn’t stop her as she bolted out of the room.

By the time Leila got back to her apartment, her phone was flooded with messages. Frank had called at least three times, each voicemail more frantic than the last.

Frank: Call me NOW.

Frank: What the hell happened?

Frank: Leila, are you okay?

She sank onto her couch and stared at the phone, debating whether to call him back. Before she could decide, there was a sharp knock at her door.

“Leila! Open up!”

Frank’s voice was unmistakable. She groaned and walked to the door, unlocking it reluctantly.

Frank burst in, his face a mix of concern and exasperation.

“What the hell, Baker? First, you disappear after the gala, and now this?” He shoved his phone in her face, displaying the same damning article.

“I know,” she said weakly. “I saw it.”

Frank crossed his arms, studying her closely. “So? Are you going to tell me what really happened?”

Leila hesitated, then blurted, “It was just one night, okay? We were both drunk, and… things got out of hand.”

Frank’s eyes widened. “You slept with Gavin Hasters? Are you insane?”

“Yes,” she said miserably. “I must be.”

Frank groaned, pacing the small apartment. “Leila, do you have any idea what kind of mess you’re in? The tabloids are going to eat this up. And if Adele Cooper decides to go nuclear…” He trailed off, his expression grim.

“I know,” she said, tears welling up. “I screwed up, Frank. I just… I don’t know what to do.”

Frank sighed and sat beside her, patting her shoulder awkwardly. “Okay, first things first. Damage control. Has Gavin said anything about how he’s going to handle this?”

Before Leila could respond, her phone buzzed with an incoming call. It was Gavin.

“Answer it,” Frank said.

Leila hesitated, then pressed the phone to her ear. “Hello?”

“Leila,” Gavin’s voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. “We need to meet. Now.”

Her stomach clenched. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“It wasn’t a request,” he said. “I’ve arranged for a car to pick you up. Be ready in ten minutes.”

The line went dead.

Frank raised an eyebrow. “What now?”

“He wants to meet,” she said, her voice hollow.

Frank frowned. “You sure that’s a good idea?”

“No,” she admitted. “But I don’t think I have a choice.”

The car dropped Leila off at a private office building downtown, far from the company headquarters. A security guard escorted her to a conference room where Gavin was waiting.

He stood when she entered, his expression unreadable. “Leila, sit down.”

She hesitated, then took the chair opposite him. The tension in the room was suffocating.

“I’ve spoken to my PR team,” Gavin said, his tone brisk. “We’re going to release a statement denying any romantic involvement between us. We’ll say you accompanied me to the gala as part of your duties, and the photos were taken out of context.”

Leila nodded in response.

“There’s more,” Gavin continued, leaning forward. “I need you to stay out of the spotlight for the next few weeks. No social media, no interviews, nothing. The less attention we draw, the better.”

“And what happens to me?” she asked, her voice trembling. “Do I still have a job after this?”

Gavin’s gaze softened slightly. “Of course. You’re not being punished for this, Leila. But we need to be careful. The Bancrofts are already asking questions, and I can’t afford for this to affect the deal.”

Leila’s heart sank. So that’s what this was about, protecting the company, protecting him.

“Fine,” she said quietly. “I’ll do whatever you need. Can I leave now?”

“Yes. Be good” Gavin nodded

As Leila left, the only thing she could think of despite all the chaos was the night she and her boss shared.

  • LOVE AND LUST   CHAPTER 44

Leila felt a little nervous about seeing Adele Cooper. Honestly, she had no idea what she was going to say when she saw her. She did not think it through before texting her yesterday. Gavin had slept over at hers the previous night and she lied to him that she had to go in to work early. She hated that she had to lie to him but he did not have to know anything. It was strictly between the both women, Gavin had turned to a bone that they were both dragging and it needed to end. They were both bringing kids into the world for him and it would be crazy if they could not work things out before the arrival of the children. She had taken his car because he did not like her using public transportation now that she was pregnant, so she did not argue. They had agreed to meet at a cozy breakfast cafe in the area so it was not a long drive. She was surprised to see Adele already seated at the table, her hands were sweaty so she rubbed them on her clothes before stepping out of the car. “

  • LOVE AND LUST   CHAPTER 43 (PAST)

“Check who he is with in his office and get back to me immediately!” Adele ordered sharply, she was supposed to meet up with the doctor today with Gavin and he basically just ditched her without any explanation. She had a feeling he was with Leila. Ever since he met that stupid bitch! He had changed towards her, she was not going to let go, that was the main reason why she made sure to get pregnant for him. No man dates her and dumps her. And she would not rest until she removes Leila’s claws away from her man. She had a surprise for them and she could not wait for them to find out. Cierra knocked twice and waited for a response but she did not get one, so she turned back and went back to her table, she was just going to have to lie to Miss Adele. She hated the fact that she was spying on her boss for his ex-fiancée but she had no choice. The pay was very good and she needed it now that her father was bedridden. “Ma’am, he is in a business meeting with some associates”. The lie rol

  • LOVE AND LUST   PRESENT DAY- NEW YORK

Leila smiled before taking a deep breath. One thing about her was how she always took her time to rest when it was due, the past week had been hectic and she could not even think of one thing that happened, she just knew it was a busy one for her and even though it passed by like a blur, she still felt the aftermath and oh, it was not a sweet thing. Her alarm woke her up around 6am and she groaned loudly before she turned it off. Harold was at his place and she felt herself missing him, if he was here, he would have maybe relieved her of the stress but she only spent her weekends with him, it was a weird schedule she came up with, week days for her and Carl and weekends for Harold. She smiled when she thought of Carl, her baby, the one she lived for and the one that got her going, Carl gave her a will to live and she loved him with everything in her. She smiled as she drifted to sleep, she felt safe, in ways she never thought she could feel years before. “Mommy? Wakey-wakey” Carl

  • LOVE AND LUST   CHAPTER 42

The morning sickness had begun and it was not getting any easier, Leila walked hurriedly to the bathroom to throw up, she could not understand how it was so hard and complicated to bring a child into the world. Children were cute and all but birthing them did not come in an easy way. She rubbed her tummy and looked into the mirror, Gavin had still not talked to her. It had been two days since the incident happened and there was still no word from him, he kept ignoring her and giving her the silent treatment. She had woken up that morning with a determination to get to the bottom of what happened but she first had to survive a long day at work before confronting Adele. Her gut feeling was telling her that Adele Cooper was responsible for that ploy. She had been quiet for too long. ************************************************* Gavin had hired some other moving company to be in charge of moving Leila’s stuff to the new apartment but ever since she moved, he had not gone to check

  • LOVE AND LUST   CHAPTER 41

Leila felt lightheaded as she woke up, she remembered nothing. The room was empty and she could feel a sharp pain in her head when she tried standing up. She looked down and she was wrapped in just the duvet, she tried remembering how she removed her clothes when she was just talking to the moving guys but her head was blank, her phone was buzzing with messages, she unlocked it to see several angry texts from Gavin. She sat up immediately, ‘why was he angry?’ She thought so she placed a call to him, he picked up immediately “Your messages seemed extreme, what’s wrong?” She asked groggily, her interests piqued, she was sure she did not do anything so why was he being extra in his texts, their conversation last night was really good and she was sure they were actually in a good place after everything that had happened these past few weeks. “You slept with the moving guys!? That is low even for you” Gavin said, every word laced with spite. Leila’s head still hurt so it took her a f

  • LOVE AND LUST   CHAPTER 40

There was no way around it, Leila had to talk to Jordan about leaving, she was actually nervous about it, a part of her was still scared because of how he was in the past, so she stood in front of the apartment, waiting. Gavin had sent a moving company to help her move her things so the stress was not on her at all. She finally found the courage to go inside.“Hi, Jordan,” She said with a forced smile. She had left abruptly last night, so it was still kind of rocky between them. Jordan closed his eyes gently, before opening them, “I am really sorry about everything Leila, I really wish I told you way before yesterday but it has been really hard to bring it up”She smiled stiffly again, “It’s all good. I am leaving though, you can have the apartment, the lease is on for two years, and I don't really care”“You do not have to leave, I’ll leave. I can always find somewhere else to stay, I did you wrong, you don’t have to suffer for what I did. I already called Adele Cooper, I told her t
