ELENA

Elena Jameson walked out of the house with her bag.

"Listen," her stepmom called out, "Make sure you harvest enough maize otherwise, there'll be no dinner for you tonight."

Elena paused and nodded, "Yes, Patricia, before making her way to the farm. When she got to the farm, she harvested as much maize as she could and put them in the sack bag she carried.

However, she did not feel like going home because she knew more chores awaited her. She sat on a stone, thinking about her life.

She hated it. Her half-siblings, Andrew and Claire, were presently in college studying, whereas she was wasting away. At twenty, she was a high school dropout, and there was no hope of going to college for her.

This was not the life she dreamed of when she was little. Her parents were very happy together, and she was their little princess. After her mom died, her dad brought in Patricia and married her. She realized that he already had children with Patricia because his first son, Andrew, was older than her, and Claire was a year younger.

Elena was disappointed, but he was still her dad, and he loved her. So, she tried her best to adapt, but eventually, death took her dad as well, and everything changed. She went from the princess to the maid.

She believed that someday things would change for the better. Right now, her life was miserable. However, she hoped that someday she would find her prince charming, who would get married to her and take her away.

She wanted nothing more than to live in the big city as they currently lived in the poorest section of Labrador. After a while, she got up and picked up the bag. No matter how much she dreamed, nothing was going to come out of it.

But she was serious about not wanting to go home, so she decided to stop at her best friend's house and watch her favorite telenovela.

Her best friend, Natalie, was the same age as her. Unlike Elena, Natalie had finished high school, but then there was not enough money to go to college. Her parents asked her to wait, work and save up enough, but she was better off than Elena, who had nothing and no hope.

Right after her father died, Patricia stopped her from going to school, claiming she didn't have the money to foot the bills. But Claire and Andrew went ahead to finish high school and were able to go to college.

She couldn't complain. Patricia did not stop telling her that she was lucky to have a roof over her head and food to eat. When her father was alive, she never knew what farming was since he had a big provision store.

After his death, however, Patricia got a farm and asked her to become a farmer. She spent most of her time planting corn and harvesting them. Initially, she refused to do it, but then Patricia insisted that if she did not, she would starve to death. Her only escape was being with Natalie and watching soap operas.

As she was rushing with the bag of corn to Natalie's house, she did not observe while crossing the untarred road and ended up almost being run over by a fancy car.

As she fell on the ground, she yelped in pain when she bruised her arm. She quickly picked up some of her corn which had fallen out of her bag, putting them inside.

After she got up, the driver who had stopped, came out of his car. She looked at him and was surprised. He was the most handsome man she had ever seen. He was tall and looked charming.

She stared at her torn dress and became self-conscious. She looked so dirty compared to him, but she had always believed that someday she would find her prince charming, who would look just like the man in front of her.

"I am so sorry," he said, "I guess I wasn't paying attention as I was discussing with my friend inside. I'm really very sorry."

"No, it's fine. I also didn't look at the road properly," Elena replied humbly.

"Okay, so, do you want me to take you to the hospital?" he asked.

"Oh no, no, it's just a scratch, no need for that," Elena said, refusing his gesture.

"Really?" He asked.

Elena nodded.

"Okay, let me give you some money. You can just get some drugs," he said, taking out some money from his wallet and offering it to her.

Elena shook her head, refusing to take it, "There's no need for that, sir."

"No, I insist," he said.

Elena refused again, saying, "I have an ointment at home. Once I apply it, it will help."

"Oh, I'm impressed. What is your name?" he asked.

"Elena," she replied with a smile. "Elena Jameson."

"Elena, wow, it's a nice name. I am Kyle, and sorry about your bruise. Alright, take good care of yourself," he said before getting into his car and driving away.
