A typical luxury bus gives you the freedom to adjust, stand firm, bend, or curl up while in transit. I wrapped my head inside my jacket with my face on my laps as I listen to the dramatic rythym my heartbeat propounded. On a regular day while undertaking a long journey in a luxury bus like this, I would stand firm when I got tired, stretch myself lifting my hands up, sit with my legs up facing the air conditioner above or sometimes sit on the handle of any seat I was occupying. That was how I made the previous journeys I embarked on luxury buses condusive. Today, my mood and position depicts the state of a child who has just been abandoned by her mother. I began to sob as I listened to my aching heart.Today, I was running away from home. 'My poor mother. ' I thought as I cleaned my eyes with the edge of my grey jacket which was large enough to accomdate my face and cover my sorrowful state from the prying eyes of the passengers. I took deep breaths, cleaned my eyes again and sat up properly, my back on the chair with my face facing the inbuilt air conditioner on the roofing of the bus. Sobbing would never solve the problem at hand and with about twenty four hours journey ahead, I needed to pull myself together and brace myself against what lies ahead.
I tapped my cell phone and saw that it was 23 minutes to 8:am. I swiped up to ensure it was still in flight mode. The bus left rather too early today. 'Thank God. ' I muttered to myself. If another hour or less was spent at the luxury bus station in Numan for take off, I would have been caught by the people I was running away from:My family. This is my third time on a luxury bus. The bus accommodates about fifty passengers who sit two in each row from left to right. The luxury bus is probably the largest land vehicle I have ever seen or been on. It is more spacious and conducive compared to the conventional buses we took to school, short trips or events. The first time I was on a luxury bus was three years ago. I was seventeen and was traveling to Oak State for the wedding of my cousin Sapwavi. It took us about 18 hours to get there and I swore never to engage in such a journey like that again till last year I took a twenty four hours journey on a luxury bus to GreenLand for a three days workshop sponsored by the hair salon I work for and yet, here I am in a luxury bus said to be undertaking a 24 hours journey which began less than an hour ago. I guess circumstances can make people change their doctrines.
I closed my eyes but sleep evaded. My father's voice came thundering in my ears. "You loose child. All my money gone. " he kept screaming. "You are worthless. So worthless like your mother. " he kept saying. I knew I shouldn't have let the rage take over me and rather than controlling it, I grabbed the traditional pestle and landed it on my father's head without second thoughts. I guess the hatred I had been developing towards him lately was mature enough. While the blood gushed from his head as he laid in it's pool, I staggered inside, grabbed my jacket and fled holding my mobile phone. That was in the earliest hours of the day. Around 5am to be specific. I was lucky my mother had placed her monthly income in my jacket that day and while running, I felt something in my jacket's pocket, my mouth was wide opened after I thought I ran away with just my mobile phone but rather with something much more. This monthly income of my mother's in my jacket earned me a bus ticket to Greenland and the change will be used for whatever I have no idea or planned of or maybe till I die. Now all that mattered was that I needed to get to GreenLand. The farthest place from mine and what seemed like the end of the earth.
I was tapped on my left shoulder and I quickly turned around to see who it was that made me feel this jumpy. "Hi I am Trevor. " said the guy. "Okay. " I replied turning around indicating my lack of interest in the whole quest by the man. "Well it seems you are in a pretty bad mood but you have to talk you know? I am your seat mate " he said. "And so? " I retorted facing the other side which happens to be a window. "So you can't avoid me all through the journey. " he replied. I then turned around finally facing him. His neatly shaved hair and wristwatch first caught my attention and when I looked down, my eyes were greeted by his top notch sneakers. 'Such a devilishly handsome man. ' I thought. "Ella. " I replied averting his gaze not even realizing why. I then sat with my back leaning on the chair facing the space people call front. "You are going to GreenLand? " he asked. "Then why else will I be on this bus or you think am going to heaven? " I replied in a harsh tone but he smiled instead and I noticed his dimple. "I just wanted to crack a joke that's all. I didn't know it will be this dry. " he said. I said nothing and he continued. "You are going to GreenLand for the first time? " asked the guy or Trevor now I guess.
"Look mister. " I began. "I just ran away from home and I'll appreciate it if you shut up, sit tight and enjoy the ride. I don't want to make any acquaintance. " I stated. "You ran away from home? " he asked in a surprise tone. It then dawned on me that I just divulged my top secret to him. 'What came over me? ' I thought. I happen to be a reclusive person and barely share my hidden agendas even with my mom: the closest person to me yet I just blurted out to this Trevor guy or whatever that I am running from home. "So tell me. " came his voice. "Why did you run? " "Oh my God!" I muttered to myself. "This is going to be a long ride. " I told myslef. It was 9:15 am then and that wahwas how I met Trevor :the stranger on the bus I can't help falling for.
"Ella tell me something. " came his annoying voice yet again. "Why did you run away or probably on the run since we are still on transit right? " he said chuckling. I said nothing. "I am so going to bother you that I can bet you won't let me leave when we get to our destination. " he boasted and winked. "Are you kidding me? " I asked. "24 hours from now, you'll be begging to come with me. " he said confidently while extending his right hand for a betting right or rather a handshake. I shook my head, hissed and said nothing. "So tell me. Are you always this rude or is it because you are on the run miss? " he asked. "Leave me alone. " I said. "Hey! Each person on this bus has a seat next to another. Why do you think they made it so? For bonding and conversations so the long journey could get shorter and even interesting. " he said. "Well since I, your partner having to be giving you a tough time, can't you just lock up and count today an unfortunate one. " I said. "I
"I will tell you about my father not because I want some sort of sympathy or momentary companionship but because I just want to get it off my chest and moreover, we might never see the moment we finally alight this bus just like you assert " I said. "Okay Ella Moore. " said Trevor. "Tell me about Mr. Moore. " he added. I took a deep breath, heaved a sigh and began. "My father never really cared for him. Infact he doesn't. " "Why are you conclusive about that. " interrupted Trevor. "At my graduation in nursery school, he never showed up, when we did plays in high school and parents would come to watch thier kids perform, my mom was always the one there. " I said with tears welling in my eyes. "Maybe he got occupied and your programs clashed with his schedule. " said Trevor. "Hey don't look at me that way. " after he noticed the stern look I was giving him. "Okay fine. Your dad wasn't really present and it's not nice. " he said. "Not nice for an only child. " I added. "Is that why you
"My mother met with my dad in Greenland. She had gone there for her midwifery course and she took in during her final year period. " he paused then stared at me and continued. "She had to come back of course. She wanted my father to come home with her in Numan and acknowledge his child but... But... " he was stammering now. "But what? " I asked slowly. "That he wasn't ready. " replied Trevor. "Wasn't ready? " I asked again. "Yea that he needed to sort himself, he wasn't ready to father a child then. He wanted my mom to stay back with him and..... " he stopped. "She wasn't going to remain in Greenland raising a baby without her parents consent. " I replied. "Exactly. " he quickly replied. "So why are you on this bus to meet a man that wasn't even prepared to have you or is he prepared now? " I further asked. He said nothing. "Am sorry I don't mean it that way just that I feel he should be the one running to you not the other way round. " I said. "A
"I am terribly missing my mother." I told him. "You should call her. " he said. "Never. " I screamed probably so loud that the lady in front of us had to turn around. "Well you are having issues with your mom not your dad. So you should call her. " Trevor insisted. "You don't understand. " I said to him. "Yes I don't understand why you can't place a simple phone call to your poor mother telling her how you are doing. She must be worrying to death. It's been almost six hours she hasn't heard a word from you. " he said. "I can't call her. They'll find me. I can't take chances. " I told him. "I understand you are running away from Mr. Moore but perhaps a text message will do. Text your mom informing her that you'll be fine and just need some time to cool off. " he said. "I can't. " was my reply. "So you gonna call her when you get to GreenLand? " he asked. I didn't utter a word. "The people you are going to stay with in Greenland. Aren't they relatives, or maybe
"She meant Bella not Ella. " said Trevor to the lady in front of us who was still staring at us. "You know kids. They get confused alot. " he continued. "She must have heard how they were trying to fish out one Ella Moore earlier so she.... You know? " he said trying to convince the lady while swinging his head from side to side the way he does. The lady nodded and turned around. "Hey little one. " he said addressing Jeken. "Aunty ell... I mean Bella's phone is down. The battery went dead. You can't play any game with it right now. " he told the little girl who nodded and left a little bit disappointed. I was beginning to sweat and God knows if Trevor didn't intervene, I don't know how I would have handled the situation. "May God save me from addressing you as Ella. " he whispered into my ears. "I am Bella Brown now. " I whispered back. "I hope I don't forget that. " he whispered to me again. "So you guys are whispering now. " screamed the elderly lady. "Nothin
"Hey Lilly. " he screamed and ran to meet the strange lady. "Is that you? " he asked her holding her wrist and looking at her from head to toe. "What are you doing here? " she asked him. Meanwhile, I was standing by the corner watching Trevor exchange pleasantries with this dark skinned lady called Lilly. "Meet my friend. " he told her while pulling her closer to me. "She is.. " "Bella. " I said quickly before Trevor could forget and say Ella. "Hi. " said the lady while extending her hand to me. I shook her and said "Hello. " ", This is Lilly. " began Trevor. "We were course mates at the University. " he said. I smiled halfway and nodded. "Is she your girlfriend now? " asked Lilly. "No. " I quickly replied. "So what are you guys doing around here? " Lilly further asked. "We are on a luxury bus to GreenLand. It broke down few meters behind so we are here to grab something to eat. " Trevor told Lilly. "What are you doing here? " he asked her. "I live in this com
In as much as I wanted to Kiss him, I knew I had my dignity to protect. This is is a man I met on a luxury bus twelve hours ago. Also, I have been made to understand that he has his way around women therefore I shall not fall for this temptation else I'll be added to his edless list of rakish accomplishments. "Do it. " blurtred Trevor as if he just read my mind. We were still facing each other and I swear I was begining to burn from the inside with this sudden desire. "Do what? " I retorted. "Kiss me. " he said in a slow and erotic tune. "Never. " I replied then chuckled. He laughed and turned his head facing the bus and I did the same. "You are scared aren't you? " he asked. "No not really. " I said. "You are not just attractive enough. " I added. He laughed and said "I know the problem. One. Either you are a terrible kisser or two either you are being conscious. But I'll go for point two. " he said. "Whatever. " I said. "You don't want to kiss a man who had practically kisse
Hey! Look who is hugging me now. " said Trevor. I quickly broke off the embrace . "You know? " he continued. "Early this morning you wouldn't say hi to me now look how far we've gone. " he said and chuckled. "Hey don't feel so special. " I replied. "It doesn't mean that I'll beg you to take me along as you claim. " I added. "Let's get some sleep. It's past 3:am. We need all the sleep we can get. " he said. I nodded. Few minutes later, I heard Trevor saying to me. "You can't sleep can you? " "Uhmm am not feeling sleepy. " I lied. "Of course you are. Your eyes say so. " he retorted. "You are scared. You are scared you might get another nightmare aren't you? " he asked. "Probably. " I replied then coughed. 'Let's do this. I'll tell you about the scariest night of my life and you tell me about yours. " suggested Trevor. "Am not sure if I can do this. " I replied shaking my head in disapproval. "You can. I'll go first and don't you worry. You don't have to tell me about your scarie
