ACCIDENT

I woke up in a strange surrounding. At first, everywhere seemed blank till the wares began to manifest. I could visibly see the blue curtains, the white wall, the ceiling was white too and the figure over me had white on. Too much white I thought. I closed my eyes and opened them immediately. My forehead felt sore and was terrible aching. I felt my forehead with my right palm. It was covered with a bandage. "Are you okay? " whispered the person in white standing over me. He bent over. He is a man. I looked around and it dawned on me that I was in a hospital ward. The drip hooked to my hand, the annoying scent of medication, the patients lying around like lettuce and the hospital attendants roaming about in the ward. "I think am fine. " I finally replied the man in white. Whether he was a doctor or nurse, it didn't matter. At least he isn't a mortuary attendant. I tried to sit and the man in white said. "Don't stress yourself. Stay back if you must. "  "I am Dr. Shaw. " he added. I groaned and held my forehead then sat. "Thank Goodness you are okay. Do you remember anything? "

Dr. Shaw said. I nodded. "We were in a bus then the driver's boy said something about the breaks being faulty and next thing I remembered was passing out." I said. "You hit your head on the bus window. " the doctor said. "Trevor. " I instantly blurted. "Where's Trevor?  Where are the rest of the passengers. " I asked. I was panicking now. "They are all fine. Look around. " said the doctor. I looked around and saw the elderly lady with her head wrapped in a  bandage. Sam was holding his arm and squirming. Jeken and Mary's mother was caressing Mary's bandaged leg telling her she will be fine while Jeken and her mother looked practically fine. "Uhmm the passengers sustained minor injuries. You guys will be fine. " said Doctor shaw. "And Trevor? " I asked. "Who is Trevor? " the doctor said throwing the question back at me. "He's uhmm.. My friend... We were on the bus together.. I can't see him in the ward and.... " I said. "How many of you boarded the bus? " the doctor asked. "I guess thirty nine. That's what I heard the driver at the take off station in numan said. "I told him. "That's accurate. Thirty seven are here spread across the Accident unit. Two are in the emergency unit." the doctor said. I immediately grasped for breath and said "Take me to the emergency unit now. " "You need to lie down ma'am. I... " the doctor was saying while I began struggling to disintegrate the drip from my hand.

I hurried my way to the emergency unit then stopped to check for a wall inscription. 'What if something had happened to Trevor? ' I thought. 'No way. ' I assured myself. "Here. " the nurse said pointing to the unit for me. I hurried in and saw Trevor standing with his arms folded. I ran towards him and hugged him just when he was turning towards me. "I'll leave now. I guess he must be the Trevor. " the nurse said with a smile and immediately left the spot. "You woke up screaming my name right? " Trevor giggled still in my embrace. "Must you joke about everything? " I scolded him. He smiled. "Am glad you are okay. " he said. I wasn't hugging him now. "I checked up on you earlier and noticed you were yet to regain consciousness so I decided to come here and check this guy out." It was then that I realized I was standing in an emergency unit and one of the passengers, an old man of probably seventy was battling for his life. "He has the most severe condition among all the passengers. " Trevor told me. I looked at the man who was placed on an oxygen and his skin was damaged."They say he will be fine. I pray he is. " Trevor said. We sat on the bench in the emergency unit. "I can't even remember what happened. " I said. "The bus broke down and was beyond the driver's control. I stood up. " Trevor said.

"Yea I remember you standing up. " I interrupted. "I went to the driver's boy and we tried to pull the bus to a stand and I guess it didn't work. We got into a pothole. The bus began to swindle and we crashed. This man was seated in the row where the bus had hit the pothole and I guess the whole thing sent him summersaulting and... " Trevor said then heaved a deep sigh. "Glad no one is dead. " I said. Trevor nodded. "It happened in a highway in town so commuters immediately came to our rescue and helped us get out before the bus caught fire. " Trevor revealed. "The bus caught fire? " I screamed. He nodded. "Jesus! " I exclaimed. "And you escaped without a scratch. " I said to Trevor. "The driver's boy and I. " he replied. Suddenly, a passenger with a bruised face walked in. "The entry book is here. " he announced. Trevor got up and hurried outside while I followed him.

We were in the hospital reception now. The driver's boy had the bus entry book in his hands. "You've got the book right? " Trevor said while we approached him. "God is on our side. " he declared. "The book was right beside me. We are lucky the front side of the bus wasn't razed by the flames. " the driver's boy said. "Look. "Said the guy with the bruised face while pointing to a name on the take off entry list. "Charles Wagman. That's his name." he added. They were referring to the guy in the emergency unit. Soon, Trevor had placed a call via the next of kin contact he filled in the entry book. "I've spoken to someone. They'll be here as soon as they can. " Trevor said after returning from a corner where he had placed the phone call. "What next? " the bruised face guy asked. "I don't know. " Trevor replied. "Let's get back to the ward. " Trevor said. The driver was making a call by the other corner. I got up then felt my pocket. "Your cellphone is with me. " Trevor told me. I heaved a sigh of relief and we went to the accident ward. In the ward, the passengers were seated while some laid on the beds groaning. Majority were injured but hopefully the injuries were minor.

The driver's boy then showed up in the ward and stood in the center of the bus like he always does whenever he wanted to speak in the bus. He would park the car, stand in the middle of the bus and speak. "I don't actually know where to start from. " he began. "Start somewhere. " Sam retorted. No one laughed. There was so much agony around. "I am terribly sorry for all that happened. I don't know what happened. I guess we all got unlucky and our bus had it's faults. I am terribly sorry and I apologize on behalf of my luxury bus station." He said sounding emphatic. "Regarding the accident. " he continued. "Thankfully no one died. However one of us is in the emergency unit and the necessary contacts have been made. Your hospital bills will be sorted by our travel agency. They'll soon connect to the hospital. I phoned my boses informing him of our predicament. " he said. "The passengers were murmuring now and thier faces were beginning to light up. I guess this is because the agency will settle thier bills. "The issue at hand " continued the driver's boy "is that, a new bus is on the way and will arrive tommorow in the day. " "Do You think we would want to travel with your bus again? " the elderly lady thundered. Some of the passengers were backing her up with their murmurs. "I've called my son. I will stay in this hospital till he comes to pick me up. " she said. "I understand your agony madam. I am so sorry. " the driver's boy said.

Someone was hissing already. "The thing is. Anyone who is fit to continue the journey can do so. We owe you guys a complete journey to GreenLand and it's my duty to get you guys there. So some who are yet to recover can stay back in the ward and recover. Be rest assured that our agency will sort your bills. Those with minor cuts and injuries who are willing can continue with me on the new bus coming. " he said. "And our luggages? " asked a lady. "Well. The back side of the bus caught fire and thank God it was put out in time. However, few things got damaged. I'll be going back to the accident scene to sort the things and you guys can pick up your luggages by tommorow." replied the driver's boy. "Meanwhile, if you don't get on the new bus coming tommorow, you'll sort your transport fares. Either you get a bus back home, stay here and get picked up or get another bus to GreenLand. " he said then left the ward.

My head was aching terribly so I laid back. "What's the time? " I asked Trevor who was sitting on the bed beside me. "6:32pm. " he replied. "When do you think the other bus will arrive? " I further asked him. "Probably before noon tommorow. " he answered. I was feeling drowsy now. I was speaking slowly. "We leave tommorow right? " I said. "Why don't you rest first. " he replied. "If the bus comes tommorow we will leave right? " I said again. I was now begin to hallucinate and never really heard anything Trevor was saying. My eyes were shut and I was saying a lot of things. "My head hurts.. Urghh! " I screamed in frustration. Then I felt a needle pierced into my vein. The doctor or nurse must be up to something now. "Is it a pain killer? " I asked and didn't hear anyone speaking. I tried to open my eyes. I was having blurred visions. The people standing over me were speaking  yet I couldn't hear them. And I fell asleep. When I woke up, everywhere was dark from the window. The ward was lighted up by bulbs. My cellphone was behind my pillow. I grabbed it and checked the time. It was past 10pm. "Damn. " I muttered. Trevor was seated on the chair close to me and was sleeping with his face on my bed. I tried to get up and felt like something was holding me back. Trevor was holding my hand; his hand was locked up in mine. I smiled and bent over to see his face. He opened his eyes and reached for my lips. Now how did all this began? The accident and meeting Trevor.
