FOUR | THE FAILED ESCAPE

CHAPTER FOUR | THE FAILED ESCAPE

ALENA

I Keep trembling even after he is gone. I am scared of the plan he had in mind for me. The real reason he didn't reject me. I stay still for a few minutes, trying to make my breathing even. When I'm no longer breathing like there is limited air for me and my heart is back at its regular beat, I heave out a sigh and sit upright. I leave the bed and start pacing the room, with my mind running in miles.

I may not be in the dungeons anymore, but I'm still a prisoner. I need to get out of this goddess-forsaken house, and I need to do it fast.

Alpha Nathan is a very unpredictable person, and I'm scared that he will change his mind and reject me, then kill me. I feel like the only reason I am still alive is that as mates, whatever he feels is what I feel and whatever I feel is what he feels.

I know I need to be quiet about what I am about to do. If he finds out my plans, I'll lose even more of my freedom. I decide to stay in the confines of my room for now and walk over to the large window. There is a hooked latch on it that I immediately unfasten. Opening the window wide, I find a small Juliet balcony. This high up, it's very cold and extremely windy. The people below look like ants and I breathe deeply to calm myself, this building is so freaking tall. I must be at least forty stories above the ground floor. I look both ways and see that there is a small ledge that wraps around the building. It is only about six inches wide but I can see a spiraling staircase tucked into the exterior wall just a few yards away from a fire escape. I frantically look around to see if there is a way for me to get over there without falling to my death.

There are ridges along the stone wall. I can hold unto one with my hands while my feet use the ledge. It is highly risky, but as far as I can tell, it is my only way out here without anyone seeing me.

Going back to the room, I head to the closet to get some to warm me up when I try to escape. I grab a leather jacket off a hanger and put it on before zipping it up. With the degree of coldness right now, I would have to put on a scarf and gloves too, but I'm afraid that they would hinder my ability to scale through the exterior of the very tall building I am currently in.

Goddess, I must be insane.

I breathe in slowly and deeply before nodding with strong determination. I lock my door, just in case someone try's to come in and discovers that I am gone. I head to the small balcony while giving myself a little boost of confidence.

“Okay...you got this girl, you are strong and confident and you are going to get out of this shit hole."

“No you are not, go back inside and be a good mate before you get us both killed." My wolf scolds in my head.

Rolling my eyes at her, I ignore her like I do most times.

Holding onto the railing, I hoist one leg over and then the other. I take another deep breath and force myself to not look down.

Werewolves heal faster, but a fall like this would damage me beyond repair.

“You are an idiot." my wolf says again, but this time instead of ignoring her, I tell her to mind her own business and stay out of mine.

I take the first step unto the ledge, reach up and make sure my grip on the ridge above me is secure. After that, I move my feet one at a time and get myself positioned so that my nose is practically touching the exterior stone wall. The wind is stronger this high. My grip tightens as I think of what would happen if a random gust of air is the cause of my death.

Slowly, I inhale deeply before blowing it softly from my lips. Once I've calmed my nerves, I begin to make my way toward the fire escape cautiously. I feel my palms getting sweaty and my heart rate accelerating. My anxiety is through the roof right now, literarily.

When I finally reach the fire escape, I hastily clamor over the rail and sink into a crouching position in a corner as I try to catch my breath.

“OH, MY GODDESS." I exclaim.

That was extremely terrifying.

Once I've managed to get my bearings, I begin the long trek down the stairs.

Trying to make sure no one sees me, I remain hidden in the shadows and dark alleys as I make my way to the pack borders.

Once reaching there, I find two guards stationed at the pack's territory. I need to find a way to cross the territory without being seen. I start thinking of a way to get out without alerting the guards.

The only option I have is to throw stones into a nearby stream. I pick up ten random stones and throw them into the stream one at a time. At first, the guards ignore it but when I continue throwing them, they leave their post to have a closer look.

Seizing the opportunity, I run as fast as I can, immediately changing to my wolf form, not concerned enough to check if they noticed me leaving or not. I don't dare look back out of fear. I keep running until my lungs start burning.

After a few hours of running nonstop in my wolf form, I shift back to my human form. Too tired and hungry to go on, I sit under a nearby tree while taking huge gulps of breath and trying to calm my racing heart down.

I'm too tired that I don't know when I fall asleep while thinking of my old pack.

I wake up from my slumber when I smell the delicious scent that surpasses all other smells in the forest. It takes my groggy brain a few minutes to comprehend the fact that the mouth-watering smell belongs to my mate.

I jump on my feet, trying to run away only to come face to face with my furiously handsome mate.

“You are going to regret leaving me babe." my mate says while gripping my hands tightly with a crazed look in his eyes.

OH SHIT!
