Chapter 1

After I accepted the invitation, my body wouldn't stop trembling.

No one at home noticed this.

Hale bustled back and forth, carrying Leah's freshly cleaned snow boots, a sheen of sweat on his forehead.

Out of habit, I handed him a damp towel and told him to take a break.

He didn't take it. His eyes were fixed on Leah.

"Leah, your boots are packed, and your passport is on the nightstand. Stay close to us on the mountain."

Hale stepped around me and led Leah straight to her room.

He passed right by me without so much as a glance.

In five years, Hale had never been that attentive to me.

Even when I was injured defending the border and asked him to come pick me up, he'd always find some excuse not to.

Later, I found out he had spent that entire day with Leah at an amusement park.

Seeing me just standing there, Mom gave me a push.

"Go clear out your room. We have too much to pack and nowhere to put our luggage."

"Then where do I sleep?" I asked flatly.

Mom thought for a moment, then pointed at the attic.

"Move up there for now. Once we leave for the trip, you can move back into your room."

"The attic doesn't even have a window," I said.

"It's only a few days. Besides, didn't you live in the attic when you were little? You're not going to make things hard for Leah over something this small, are you?"

Thinking I was about to make a scene, her expression turned cold.

But I was too exhausted to argue. I simply moved into the attic.

My mind drifted back to childhood, when Leah first joined our family.

That year, Marcus wandered off to the border while fooling around and got caught in a rogue attack.

When Gavin saw the rogue draw a silver dagger, he stepped in front of Marcus and took the blade through the heart.

As the pack's Luna, Mom had been the one who sent Gavin to bring Marcus home that day, so she could never forgive herself.

The day Leah was brought home, Mom held her and cried for hours.

"From now on, you're my child. No one will ever mistreat you."

Then she turned to me.

"Our family owes Leah a life debt. She gets the best of everything first. You'll move into the small room next door. We'll get a bigger house soon."

A few days stretched into seven years. And nothing had changed.

The attic was barely twenty inches high. As an adult, I could only crawl through it, and the floor was coated in dust and mold.

There were no vents, only the electric hum of a fluorescent tube.

An air mattress on the floor passed for a bed.

That night, Mom made Leah's favorite barbecue.

Marcus piled meat onto Leah's plate while Hale picked the bones out for her.

I sat at the far end with nothing but an empty plate in front of me.

No one noticed that I couldn't reach anything.

Not until my stomach cramped with hunger did I get up and walk to the grill.

The moment I speared a few leftover pieces of meat, Mom rapped me on the hand with a spoon.

"Beatrice, why haven't you changed your clothes? All that dust on you is making Leah cough. She barely eats as it is, and you're only making it harder for her to eat."

I set down my plate and tossed my utensils into the trash.

Leah stood up uneasily.

"Mom, I just choked a little. Beatrice, I can go make something you like."

"Why bother with her? We're supposed to be celebrating your time off, and her being here is already ruining the mood!"

Marcus cut Leah off.

I looked at Hale, sitting beside Leah.

He said nothing, just reached over to straighten Leah's apron.

His expression was calm and gentle, without a hint of contempt, yet it hurt more than if he'd simply yelled at me.

He wasn't deliberately shutting me out. Deep down, he simply believed my hurt had nothing to do with him.

I went straight back to the attic. I was starving, but I had no appetite left.

Lying on the air mattress, I read up on the Wasteland Pack.

The Alpha King wanted to turn it into a fortified stronghold unlike any other pack territory.

It meant a five-year posting, with no trips home.

"We trained under the same mentor, and he spoke very highly of you. You're a pureblood and highly capable—exactly what we need. All you're missing is some field experience and a chance to prove yourself."

He praised me. He believed in me.

I hadn't told anyone. No one would care even if I did.

In this house, my bloodline and my achievements had never been worth noticing.

Five days left until I had to report in.

Then I would disappear from this family for good.

It would probably be a long time before they even noticed I was gone.

Mom found out from Leah that I'd come back.On the phone, her voice was hoarse and shaky."Baby, where are you? Let me come get you and take you home, okay?""No need." I leaned back in my chair. "I'll come see you today."After hanging up, I stood by the window for a long time.I wondered what it would be like to see them again. That evening, I stood outside the house in a sharply tailored trench coat. The front door was wide open.Mom, once the proud Luna of the pack, was now nothing but skin and bone. With her hands slick with grease, she stood in the kitchen, hurriedly sprinkling chili powder over the grilled meat. The instant I stepped into the living room, her legs gave out and she fell to her knees."Beatrice... I was wrong. I finally understand that now!"Dad rose from the couch, his lips trembling."You're home. That's all that matters. That's all that matters."Marcus came charging down the stairs, tripped on the rug, and stumbled toward me."Beatrice, I don't deserve to be y

In the fourth year, construction of the Wasteland Pack was completed ahead of schedule. With the Alpha King's commendation in hand, I finally took some well-earned time off.Cyrus drove the off-road truck, his knuckles white around the wheel the entire way, his usual calm doing little to hide the reluctance in his eyes."When are you coming back? What if you like the other packs better because they're more lively than ours?"I looked at his profile and laughed softly."Even if they're livelier, that's not where I belong. I'll rest for a few days, then come home."He dropped me off at the airport in the neighboring pack's territory.Back in my old pack, I headed straight for the barbecue place."Double the spice, please."A moment later, a server approached my table.Menu in hand, she froze the instant she saw me."Beatrice?"The server was Leah.Four years ago, the whole family had treated her like the center of their world. Now she wore a grease-stained apron and looked worn and exhau

For them, every day without me was a slow, lingering torment.During the first month, Mom was still frantically asking around.By the fifth month, she had stopped asking because the Alpha King had issued our pack a formal warning.By the tenth month, she could barely sleep at all.She had to rely on heavy doses of sleeping pills just to get a few hours of rest.In the middle of the night, she would wander to the attic like a ghost. She refused to lock it, clinging to the fantasy that one day I would come home, walk through that door, and tell her how tired I was.Without me, pack affairs fell into chaos.Dad worked himself ragged until his hair turned completely white. One night, as he flipped through a photo album, his fingers suddenly went still."Have you noticed?" His voice was hoarse."Ever since Leah joined our family, Beatrice hasn't appeared in a single family photo.""She was always there. Yet somehow, no one ever seemed to see her."At that, Mom burst into tears.Marcus didn'

The day I arrived at the Wasteland, I realized the conditions there were even worse than I'd imagined.Sandstorms sent walls of yellow dust sweeping across the land, reducing visibility to less than thirty feet. The person sent to meet me was Beta Cyrus Reed, handpicked by the Alpha King. His eyes were sharp but held no hostility."Beatrice? The Alpha King talks about you all the time. He says you're the one who's going to turn this wasteland around."I hopped down from the truck and surveyed the windbreak shelters made of reinforced steel panels and the barren landscape stretching as far as I could see.It was much more spacious than the attic. I would never have to hunch over again. That was enough for me.After switching to the encrypted communications device I'd been issued, I glanced at my old phone. There wasn't a single message.Typical.I couldn't tell whether I felt bitter or relieved.Maybe it was a little of both. Either way, I no longer cared. From that day on, I threw myse

Mom began searching for me frantically.Using her authority as Luna, she contacted one pack after another, trying to find out where I was.The answer was always the same."Top secret. Access denied."Refusing to give up, she dragged Dad straight to the Alpha King.He turned them away without hesitation."Beatrice volunteered for a classified project. Her whereabouts are confidential and no longer any concern of your family. You have no right to interfere."Mom left looking like an empty shell.Dad followed silently behind her.Back home, Mom stood at the attic entrance and stared inside for a long time. The attic was barely twenty inches high, and it didn't even have a window. The air was thick with dust and mildew.Somehow, she had never really noticed any of it before.Marcus stopped reporting for pack duty too.He locked himself in his room, scrolling endlessly through the group chat.He replayed Mom's voice message."Little Leah is finally taking her first trip!"Then he found his

Arthur was shown into the living room.He sat on the couch and glanced at my parents, who were all smiles, already dressed and ready for their trip."What brings you here?" Dad asked.Arthur set the paper package down on the coffee table, his voice grave."Years ago, when that attack happened at the border, I managed to save a video recording of the incident."Mom looked at him, confused.Arthur spoke slowly, clearly uneasy."When the rogues attacked your son, the first person to rush in and save him wasn't Gavin. It was a young wolf who happened to be passing by."The room went deathly silent."Gavin wasn't the one who saved Marcus."Everyone in the room was stunned."After the young wolf pushed Marcus out of harm's way, the rogue turned on Gavin, who was standing nearby.""Gavin panicked. Desperate to save himself, he grabbed the young wolf and tried to use him as a shield against the rogue's silver blade. But Gavin lost his footing, and the blade struck and killed him instead.""He
