Camille's POV
"Camille, I've got a surprise for you tonight."
Lucian kissed my forehead this morning before leaving.
"Wait for me at home. Be a good girl. I want your blood-orange venison for dinner."
Today was our fifth anniversary—and my birthday.
Knowing the pack had been secretly prepping for a massive celebration the past two days, I couldn't help but smile. I really thought this cold-hearted alpha had finally learned how to love his mate.
Night fell. I was still in the kitchen finishing dinner when the bells at the square started tolling like thunder.
I was caught off guard. Why didn't anyone tell me? I didn't even stop to take off my apron before I ran toward the square.
I pushed through the crowd, then froze.
Lucian was standing right in the middle of the altar. He was holding the hand of our son, Rowan, while his other arm was wrapped around a shewolf's waist.
Lara was wearing the moon-white gown that only a luna is allowed to wear. The necklace around her neck caught the moonlight.
That was my mother's last possession.
Rowan stood on his tiptoes to hand her a moonstone charm, nuzzling her hand.
"Lara, will you be my new mommy?"
Lara picked him up with a bright smile. "Oh, I'd love to, baby."
Rowan turned and yelled to Lucian, "Daddy, kiss my new mommy!"
And Lucian actually did it. Right there, in front of the whole tribe, he leaned down and gave her a deep, passionate kiss.
"From this day on," Lucian's voice carried his wolf spirit's aura to every corner of the square, "Lara is the only luna of the Aurora Shadows."
Applause hit me like a wave, drowning me in the freezing air.
I slowly turned around, crumpled my stupid apron into a ball, and walked back to the house.
The venison was still warm on the table. The candles on the blueberry cake were waiting to be lit.
Because of one thing Lucian said this morning, I'd spent all day working in the kitchen like a cheap servant.
I looked down at my hands. They were still stained with sauce I hadn't had time to wash off.
It was so ridiculous I felt sick.
For five years, I stayed with Lucian like some lowly breeder, only to be thrown away.
The kid I gave everything to raise was calling someone else "mommy."
In this house, I was the outsider. It was time to leave.
I don't know how much time passed, but eventually, I heard the door.
Lucian walked in with Rowan. His pheromones flooded the room—sharp and overbearing.
He saw me sitting in the dark and hesitated.
"You're still up?"
"Lucian, we need to talk."
Lucian looked at Rowan.
"Go upstairs, buddy."
Rowan yawned and headed up, but he stopped when he got to me.
"Mommy, happy birthday." He looked up at me.
"I... I didn't forget. It's just that Lara only has six months left to live. I want to be her son for a little while to make her happy. You aren't mad, right?"
I forced a smile and rubbed his head.
"Of course not, sweetie. You can pick whoever you want to be your mother, even if she doesn't belong in that spot."
Lucian frowned. "Camille, you know that's not what he meant."
"Daddy is the only one who gets me! Mommy, I hate you!"
Rowan gave me a resentful look and ran upstairs crying.
I slid the mating-severance papers over to Lucian.
"We're done. Let Lara be your mate while she's still alive."
Lucian's face went hard.
"What are you acting out for now? I only did that to make her happy. Are you really going to be this petty?"
"Lucian, look at her. She's wearing my moon soul stone."
That stone held my mother's scent. It was the only thing I had left of her.
"It's not some expensive diamond. I just let her borrow it. She'll give it back in a few days."
I stood up, glaring at him.
"My mother's things are not toys."
"She only has six months to live! Even Rowan is being mature about this. Why can't you just deal with her being around?"
"Haven't I dealt with enough? She's taking my mate and my son!"
That was the first time in five years I'd snapped at him. Lucian's voice went cold.
"Camille, I thought we had an agreement about Lara."
I just laughed.
"She wanted to travel, so you took her around the world, hitting every spot we ever went to. She said her biggest regret was not having a ceremony in front of the Moon Goddess... so you threw her the biggest wedding in New York."
"That ceremony was supposed to be mine! I spent six months planning it, and you gave it to her three days before it was supposed to happen."
"Lucian, you've never once claimed me in front of the Moon Goddess. Never. For five years, the pack hasn't even looked at me like a luna, because they know your wolf belongs to someone else."
"I'm the only one who's been playing dumb."
Lucian's eyes were like ice.
"Shut up. Don't push me."
I knew this arranged mating was just a business deal for the pack.
But I didn't care back then. My wolf fell for Lucian the second she saw him.
I put myself through three years of brutal luna training. I thought if I was perfect, he'd eventually love me.
Then Lara showed up, and I realized he could be obsessed with a woman—it just wasn't me.
"You want to leave? Fine. But Rowan stays here."
"Fine with me. After tonight at the square, I'm not his mother anymore anyway."
Camille's POVLucian shoved me roughly into an empty room, locked the door behind him, and pinned me against the wall. One of his hands clamped around my throat."So, is this your new trick? Thinking this is how you make me realize I can't live without you?"I struggled to pry his fingers away just enough to breathe, meeting his gaze with a cold stare."What the hell are you talking about?"Lucian leaned in closer, his voice low and dangerous."Like that time you faked being kidnapped to lure me out, only for nothing to happen. You really think putting yourself in 'danger' makes me care more, Camille?"My heart felt like it was being squeezed; the pain was so sharp I could barely catch my breath. He actually thought that nightmare was a stunt I pulled? One morning, Rowan had thrown a fit because he was bored with the food on the table, flipping his plate over.I had gone out to the forest at the edge of our territory alone to pick fresh mushrooms for my picky eater. In the woods, a ro
Camille's POVLara shot me a vicious look."No wonder the werewolves in Aurora Shadows hate you. No wonder Lucian's friends shut you out. Camille, you really should look in the mirror and figure out what's wrong with you instead of acting like a psycho here."My lips quirked into a pitying smile."Since everyone loves you so much and the Moon Goddess has been so exceptionally kind to you, I suppose your soul will be returning to Her very soon, then?"Lara caught the sarcasm immediately—I was mocking the fact that she was on her deathbed. Her eyes instantly turned red, and she looked like she was about to collapse."I don't need you to remind me... I know I don't have long to live. Maybe everything Lucian has given me is a lie. I'm sorry, Camille. That ceremony really should have been yours. I stole your life..."Before she could finish, a roar filled with violent aura erupted behind me."What do you mean, Her soul is returning to the Moon Goddess?! Camille, how dare you curse her to d
Camille's POVI remembered when Rowan was three. Because of a genetic defect from his premature birth, he collapsed during his first attempt to awaken his wolf spirit. His vitals were fading fast. The witch doctors told Lucian and me to prepare for the worst.I was the one who ran to the altar in the forbidden zone. I knelt in the pouring rain for a day and a night, slicing my palm open with a dagger and dripping my blood onto the Moonstone to earn that wolf tooth. The moment I hung it around Rowan's neck, his fever broke. His wolf spirit miraculously stabilized.Back then, Rowan would cling to my neck and say in his tiny voice."Mommy used her blood to get this treasure for me. I'll wear it forever. It's the armor Mommy gave me."And now, he had handed that "armor" over to the woman who stole everything from me.Lara clearly felt the humiliation wasn't enough. She elegantly tucked a stray hair behind her ear, purposefully flashing the red-gold Moonstone bracelet on her wrist. That wa
Camille's POVI told her everything, start to finish. When I was done, Elise let out a loud whistle, her emerald eyes sparking with excitement."Moon Goddess! You actually rejected that arrogant prick in public? Camille, that is so badass! I bet his wolf is howling in agony right now because he realized he can't control you anymore!"Hearing Elise joke about it made the heavy cloud that had been hanging over me all night start to lift.I pulled out my comm-stone and, right in front of Elise, sent a few messages to Roxanne, the maid back at the villa. Then I clicked the screen off.Elise leaned over to see the messages and her eyes nearly popped out of her head."Camille, you're for real this time? Lucian is going to be ballistic.""I remember the last time Lara framed you for pushing her into the water," she added, her voice dropping. "Lucian used Rowan to force an apology out of you."My gaze was clearer than it had ever been."Don't worry. That cheap emotional blackmail doesn't work
Camille's POVLara glanced at Rowan and immediately struggled to stand up from Lucian's arms."Rowan, good boy, don't blame Camille. I was just being clumsy..."She shook her head weakly at him, tears streaming down her face."It's my fault for being so useless. My wolf is too weak... I can't even stand on my own..."Rowan set his little mouth in a firm line, looking like a tiny, self-righteous judge."But I saw Mommy push you.""Mommy, you taught me to take responsibility for my actions. You hurt Lara, so you should apologize!"I had taught him those exact lessons during bedtime stories, never imagining they would one day be turned into blades meant to cut me.The three of them stood across from me, looking like the perfect family.Even though I was done with them, facing my son's betrayal still made my heart twist.I looked Rowan straight in the eye."You're right. People should apologize when they do something wrong. But I didn't do anything wrong. So why would I apologize?"The ol
Camille's POVIn the restaurant, Travis stared at me, his blue-gray eyes full of concern."Are you really sure about this, Camille?"I nodded, my fingertips tracing the edge of the violin case."After my mom died, this was the only thing that got me through the hardest days. Every time I play, I remember her teaching us. I was such a fool—I let it collect dust for five years all for an alpha who wasn't worth it."I let out a self-deprecating laugh."Besides, Rowan's health is back on track. He's the future leader of the Aurora Shadows and he's found a new mommy. He hasn't needed me for a long time.""What about Lucian?" Travis asked. "With his ego, how's he going to react to you going back on stage?"At the mention of that name, my gaze turned cold."My life belongs to me now. I don't need anyone's permission, especially not his."Travis watched me for a moment, his worry deepening."Have you thought this through? That arrogant prick has always seen you as his property. He never liked
