Chapter 4

Autor: Eileen
Wendy's face was ashen, her nails digging deep into her palms.

She couldn't believe how absurd the rumors had become. In this version of the story, she was being cast as such a shameless character.

She turned to leave, but was blocked by a group of socialite ladies.

"Where are you going, Mrs. Wallace? The party's just getting started."

"Come have fun with us~"

They called it having fun, but someone spilled red wine on her dress, someone "accidentally" pushed her, and finally, someone even shoved her right into the swimming pool!

Splash—

Ice-cold pool water instantly engulfed her. The stinging pain of water rushing into her nose instinctively made her struggle. Her fingers clawed desperately at the pool wall, trying to climb up.

Just as she was about to touch the edge, a hand with bright red nail polish pressed down on the top of her head.

"Help… save… me…"

"Save you? No one is coming to save you! Do you know how many young ladies would die for Jackson Wallace? He loves you so much that he values you more than his own life, yet this is how you repay him! A shameless slut like you deserves to die!"

Water rushed into her nose and throat, the suffocation making her vision go dark.

But what suffocated her even more was what these people were saying.

She was shameless and despicable? Jackson loved her more than his own life?

What a colossal joke!

"What are you people doing?!"

A furious shout erupted. The force holding her down suddenly disappeared.

In her blurred vision, Wendy saw Jackson rushing over like a madman.

She suddenly felt like laughing. What was he panicking for? Wasn't this all his fault?

Jackson fished her out of the water and raged at the crowd.

"Are you insane? How dare you lay a hand on my wife?!"

"Mr. Wallace, we just couldn't stand what she did…"

"Enough!" Jackson didn't explain the truth and only said coldly, "Even if Wendy's baby belongs to a kidnapper, I still love her, and that will never change!"

Amidst a chorus of "Mr. Wallace is such a devoted husband", he carried the soaked Wendy away from the scene.

In the restroom, Jackson brought a dry towel to wipe her hair.

"Wendy, I know how frustrating it is for you. It's my fault." His voice was gentle. "I promise something like this will never happen again. Please bear with it for a bit longer. Once Candace gives birth, I'll send her abroad. After that, our lives will go back to normal, okay?"

Not okay.

There's no going back, and there's no future.

Wendy was feeling utterly exhausted. "I want to go home."

Jackson paused. "The party isn't over yet… We can't both leave, it'll look bad. I'll ask the driver to take you home first. I'll go back a bit later, okay?"

Was it because it would look bad, or was it because he couldn't bear to leave Candace at the party alone?

Wendy let out a chuckle. Lacking the strength to confront him, she got up to leave.

After returning to the mansion, Wendy immediately started packing her luggage.

One item after another, she cleared away every trace of herself left in that house.

She didn't know how long she had been packing, but just as she was closing the last suitcase, the main door opened.

Jackson stood in the doorway, staring in shock at all the suitcases. A sense of panic rose within him.

"Wendy, what's all this? Why are you packing? Where are you going?!"

After a burst of static noise, Thomas' cautiously probing voice was heard. "Have you really moved on?"The moment these words came out, Jackson's body instantly tensed up. He held his breath on the hospital bed, afraid he would miss a single word.Very soon, Wendy's firm and decisive voice fell on Jackson's ears. "Yes."The word "Yes" struck him like a bolt of lightning, causing all the blood in his body to freeze. His fingers unconsciously clenched the bedsheet, his knuckles turning white. His body felt nailed to the hospital bed, unable to move an inch. His mind went completely blank, all thoughts instantly drained away, as if his entire world had collapsed. The ever-increasing ringing in his ears made it difficult for him to hear clearly what Wendy said next.Actually, it didn't even matter. After all, that single word already told him her answer. She had truly moved on from him. This also meant she no longer loved him, nor would she ever return to him.The deep affection

By the time the art exhibition came to a close, Jackson still hadn't managed to say a single word to Wendy. When she walked out, he was going to chase after her, but his phone suddenly rang.Looking at the word "Father" on the screen, Jackson ultimately chose to answer the call.Neither father nor son spoke at first. All they could hear was each other's breathing. Finally, his father broke the silence first, "Time is almost up. Are you still unwilling to come back?"Jackson and his father were not that close. His father had spent very little time with him in his childhood, and they had almost no common topics. His father was also a stern man, unwilling to proactively communicate with his own son much. The rift between them had only grown over time. Jackson wasn't used to hearing his father ask him a question, so he needed some time to process it.He was silent for a while before saying, "I will go back, but I want to get my answer first."He just wanted to know if Wendy still

That evening, fireworks burst across the city sky. The colorful, dazzling lights illuminated half the sky.On the balcony of the Harper mansion, Wendy stood among the guests like the moon surrounded by stars. In the car not far away, Jackson could only vaguely make out the smile on her face. That smile was still so infectious, so much so that it made him smile too."Happy birthday, my Wendy."After the last fireworks display ended, the guests gradually dispersed. One luxury car after another drove off into the distance. The only ones left in the Harper mansion, besides the Harper family, were the servants tidying up the main hall. But Jackson's car still didn't move away. Not until the very last light in the Harper household was turned off did Jackson tell David to start the car.But suddenly, someone gently tapped on Jackson's car window. It was the butler of the Harper family.Seeing Jackson roll down the window and look at him, the butler extended the gift Jackson had se

When Wendy found out, she'd be lying if she said she wasn't disappointed, but she still forced a smile and told him it was alright.Feeling deeply guilty, he hugged her and coaxed her, telling her that for her next birthday, he would make her an even better one.He did make this "Heart of True Love" later, but its rightful owner was no longer by his side.Jackson took a deep breath and raised his hand to tap on the car window. The window rolled down, and an unfamiliar face eagerly leaned over."Mr. Wallace."Jackson handed the gift to the man and smiled gratefully. "Sorry to trouble you."The Harper family invited many people to the banquet, and among them happened to be someone Jackson knew who hadn't cut ties with him. He entrusted this person to help him deliver the gift. The man waved his hand, said "no trouble at all" several times, then headed toward the Harper mansion with Jackson's gift.Because of the large number of guests attending, the security checks at the Harper

Her mother walked further away as she spoke on the phone. Inside the room, Wendy covered her mouth to keep herself from crying out loud. She knew her parents loved her very much. Perhaps sensing the dip in Wendy's mood, Thomas made an executive decision and packed both her and their parents off to their mother's hometown for a change of scenery and some relaxation.Initially, he had wanted to send his wife along too, but she was feeling slightly unwell and chose to rest at home.As for Thomas himself, he naturally stayed behind to take care of his wife, and conveniently, to stop Jackson from finding Wendy.Because David's information wasn't updated, Jackson still went to various venues to try and run into Wendy just as before. The first time, he spent a whole night in a public square, braving the cold wind. Wendy did not come to watch the fireworks, and he got soaked in the rain.Unsurprisingly, he fell ill. This time, there was no longer a woman by his side carefully tending to him, wiping him down with alcohol wipes throughout the night. The second time, he went searching for her in a bar. He used to despise bars the most. Although it was a quiet bar, e
