Lost her

She was looking through the old racks of books in the old store room, in hope that she would find something useful which would disclose the identity of that hidden man. She was sure that somehow that man must have a relation with her mother in past that's why he helped her.

She desperately turned the pages of the second diary of Samantha which was 10 years old, but unlucky her, she found no clue.

The moon was full and it's white visible light was seeping through the old broken glass window. The light breeze was flowing, producing the sound of rattling leaves, making her hair slide on her bare shoulder. With a pouty face she got up again and opened the last drawer of the legless table, making a unpleasant squeaky noise.

A thick layer of dust hiding the design of the vintage cover and old quality of paper looking rather rough. Stuffed between dirty pieces of paper, she seemed hesitant to pick up that trash looking journal.

As soon her hands gripped the memoir, her phone started to ring in her pocket. Simultaneously it scared the shit out of her as she was deeply immense in that rag thing.

She took it out and placed that journal on the table. Pressing the button of Receiving call, she spoke, "hello!"

"Miss Ruby speaking?" The voice from other side seem to be urgent.

"Yeah it's me" she replied.

"We have found the donor for your mother, and we immediately need to carry out the operation. Please come over as soon as possible to sign consent documents" the voice carried on in one go.

"What? Yeah I'm coming" the news was equally unbelieving and joyful.

She got up instantly, running out and closing the old store room behind her.

In hurry, she almost ran to the hospital in her casual state and slippers. She reached the hospital in about an half an hour. Gladly she got the last bus even in late night.

She crossed the emergency and ran towards ICU. Midway she saw an accident emergency, nurses rushing the body towards the operation theatre, but her own concern was too big to pay any attention to that.

She entered her mother's room and in two long strides she reached the doctor. Nurses and other staff were already present there, taking multiple measures of her mother's limp body.

"Did you really found the donor?" She asked desperately between her heavy breaths.

"Yeah, we have got a accident body which has no hope of being alive again as it's brain is not working at all but it's heart is beating. I think their family will agree to donate the heart if we pay them handsome amount" doctor explained everything to her.

"Okay then talk to them please" she emphasized.

"Dr Bhumesh is on its way to OT, let's see what news he brings. He will try to persuade the decease's family" he replied while checking her mother's pulse and writing down all the vitals.

"Thankyou" she said our of courtesy and sat on the couch beside her mother's bed.

"Sir the hospital has arranged a donor, and they will carry out her surgery tonight" Joseph informed as Dawson took a large puff of his cigarette, making his study room smell like rancid smoke.

"What are the chances of her survival?" He asked, releasing the smoke out of his mouth.

"Barely 50%...." He coughed badly.

"Critical" he commented and stood up beside the large window, watching the full moon shone more than ever. Dumping the cigarette in ash tray, he placed his both hands in the pockets of his grey pants.

"Keep a good look at her, after all we need her" he instructed him rather out of interest, letting her young face come before his sight and blessing his eyes.

"Ofcourse sir" Joseph replied taking in every inch of his command.

"By any chance, what do you think Joseph, does she know about her parents past?" He asked curiously rather trying to answer his own consciousness.

"Well....it's doesn't seem like that. If she knew you then she must have recognized you that day when she saw you" he suggested.

"But don't you think, maybe she knows my name but don't know me by face?" He popped another question.

"I don't think so sir, because everywhere only your father's name 'Wayans' is mentioned. And as far as my judgement, her mother never bring her daughter to any of the court trials because maybe she didn't wanted her daughter to get involve in this mess" he explained his theory, satisfying him with his answer.

"Acceptable" he turned the conversation over with his compliment.

Joseph left the room immediately, after realizing his boss's signal.

"Either way Ruby, you've fall into my trap and I won't let you escape easily. We've got a lot to talk about" he whispered to the darkness as his eyes shone with a tinge of revenge.

"Please rush her to the OT immediately, we don't have much time" Dr Bhumesh instructed the other doctors and nursing staff to immediately take Samantha for an immediate surgery.

Seeing this, Ruby panicked.

"Dr! Did they agree to donate? My mother will be safe right? Will this surgery be successful?" She kept asking questions in one go, as the doctor had to turn around to give her attention.

"We're in hurry right now, we can't wait much. But we'll try out best to save your mother. Rest assure" he replied shortly and rushed with the stretcher as they all took her mother's lifeless body to operation theatre.

The doors were closed on her face and she stood there, frozen. It all took just about 1.5 hours to happen. Everything changed in it.

Her mother got donor and now she was already inside for the incision. And there she was, left alone in this critical situation. The world seemed to pause for her as each second passed like an hour.

She didn't know what to clearly think about, she already heard the nurses talking behind a while ago.

Flashback

"I don't think her mother is gonna survive, why doctors are spending so much time and energy on her?" The nurse said blatantly.

"Obviously there's no use to that, I don't realize how she arranged so much money for her mother's transplant. I mean like it will also go to waste because doctors already know that she don't even have 10% chances of survival" the other staff nurse replied while sticking out the electrodes from Samantha's chest.

"such a waste" the words made Ruby's heart wrench in pain as she felt like someone squeezed it from inside. She couldn't help stand any more beside the glass door, she backed out and left the place immediately.

Flashback ends

How much she tried to console herself, it felt in vain. She knew her mother had a fifty-fifty situation. She might get alive again or maybe never wake up again. The thought gave her jolts of shivers, as she couldn't expect anything more worse than it.

She sat down at the nearest chair and held her head in between her hands.

Misery

Desolation

Affliction

That's what she felt at the moment.

An hour passed away, like was kept on constant needles. There was no hint of sleep in her eyes as she tried to keep herself awake, torturing herself more.

Her eyes started to hurt from the heavy eyelids, no more tears couldn't even form in her eyes, it felt like her eyes ran out of water and seemed like a deserted place.

The night seemed to be exceptionally long. She got up and walked out if the hospital, in need to breathe.

The wind blowing in the dead of night, and she could hear the dogs barking in distance. The yellow street lights and the flies roaming under them. Everything was calm as a midnight sea.

She sat under a tree, the rustling sound of leaves bringing her a sense of peace. Few leaflets fell above her head and onto her lap.

She picked one of them and realized, all she ever want is a peaceful and calm life living in this nature and far from this hustle world. Where no human can bring her miseries and she could paint these beautiful sights all day and night long. Where there's no reason to keep awake and she could sleep worriless.

She looked up at the sky and looked the shining moon, which directly shone it's light on her face. And the stars which accompanied him. Everything was right beside her but she was not with them. She left her heart and mind somewhere and she had to get up again to go where it was.

As she left the relaxing surrounding behind her and stepped forward towards the hospital, feeling her breath quickened simultaneously.

The doors were opened of the operation theatre and some disappointed doctors, their heads hung low maybe with tiredness, stepped in her direction.

"We're really sorry but we couldn't save her. She died in the middle of the surgery due to heavy blood loss." Dr Bhumesh Kumar spoke, not able to meet her eyes or even look in her direction.

Her eyes forgot to blink and not a single drop of tear formed in her thirsty eyes.
