I had lain in bed all night, not a wink of sleep in my eyes as I stared at the wall in front of me. A mural of a train station. I hated it—just a reminder of things I couldn’t change. I sighed before leaving my bed. It was undone, but the moment I came out of the restroom, it would be made up as if two people had slept in it.

I couldn’t remember even sharing a bed with him.

I turned on the bathroom light before getting ready for the day. I slipped on a dress, smoothing back my hair, and returned to my room. As predicted, and like clockwork. Bed made, cup of tea at the side of my bed with my pills and a book for me to read. I moved to the tea, picking it up and drinking. I had started my morning reading when I heard a knock on my door.

I froze in place. A knock? That was out of place. More knocks came, as I stood from my seat.

“Come in,” I answered. The door opened, and to my surprise, it was our maid. Rosy. I tilted my head to her, “Good morning, what is it?” I asked her.

“Morning, Mrs. Ballard.” Her face looked grim. “Mr. Ballard has called the doctor for a home visit. The doctor is here.” I stared at her, knowing… confused- then I remembered. Yesterday, I fainted. Our driver told Triston. I pressed my lips tightly.

“I assume she’s waiting?” I sighed out, “Send her in.”

I never had a choice if I needed to see a doctor. Once someone told Triston I was even slightly out of place- he’d have one sent out to see me first thing. I wondered why. Wouldn’t it be better if I died? Make it more convenient for him to rid himself of me?

“Yes, ma’am.”

The doctor pulled the arm cuff off,

“Blood pressure reading is good,” She nodded, “And have you been keeping up with your medication?” Of course, I had; it was placed with my morning tea every single day.

I replied, “Yes.” I looked at her, “I was just faint for a moment. Probably nothing right?” My doctor nodded in agreement.

“Yes, that could be it.” She opened her notepad. “Or we could be seeing your illness return.” Great. More terrible news. “But to prevent that, I’ll send more medication to your pharmacy and recommend more bed rest for you.” Bed rest? More rest than I already do? Any more rest and I’ll turn to stone. The doctor nodded, “I see that you have stopped refilling your birth control. Are we trying for a baby again?” No. I wasn’t trying for a child. We would never try for a child.

I lowered my head in shame, “I got an implant last year.” I told her, “Too busy for a baby.” I was not busy. Not at all. Triston told me three years ago, we would never have a child. He never wanted that from me now. Four years ago, though, that’s all we wanted. For us to have a bundle in our home, to feel like I had purpose again. If I weren’t so careless, I would have fulfilled that dream, but now. It’s all a memory.

“I can see. That’s why you're so faint.” She smiled at me. “Once we are ready, you can call me and I’ll have that implant out within the day.” I would never make that call.

“Am I all set?” I asked, and she smiled.

“Yes, you are. Just get some rest, your husband does want a word with me before I leave-” I placed my hands on my lap.

My chest hurt as I spoke up, “If he asks you anything…” I hated to do this, but if I didn’t, he would give me that look. The look I hated. “You can tell him.” She nodded, knowing that was our usual.

“Alrighty, get some rest.” With that, she packed her bag and left. I sat in my seat, the grip on my dress tightening.

-----------------------------

I was seated in the dining room, dinner served now with a side of pills. I picked at the green beans, hunger just seemed out of bounds now. I was quiet and alone. Maybe tonight I would leave the plate- after all, the doctor did come out. No, not an option. If I didn’t finish this, I’d probably be rushed to the hospital. I lifted it to my lips, taking a bite. I heard footsteps approaching, my brow moving up in question.

Triston entered the dining room, eyes still on his phone. He never stopped working, which I already knew. “Rosy!” He called out to our maid, “Set me a plate, please, I’ll be having dinner in here tonight.” I suddenly felt odd, restless in my seat as he sat at the other end of the door. He didn’t glance up at me at all. Rosy came in, placing his food down. “You can leave for the night, Rosy. I’ll clean this up.” He told her. She nodded to him before leaving us. He began eating, his chews being the only thing that echoed through the room. I didn’t want to speak with him. I didn’t want to eat with him. I didn’t want him near me.

“The doctor told me you are going to need to take new meds.” He spoke while staring at his phone. Looking over documents, probably. “You should take better care of yourself.” Why would I have to do that? I had everyone else doing it for me. I looked up, and his face was calm. It always was. Unreadable.

“How was your business trip?”

He replied. “Fine.” His eyes moved up, and for the first time in almost a year, I saw them. His dark blue eyes. They were sapphires that looked so cold. “I have the stylist coming in tomorrow. Pick out a few dresses you like. Nothing white. We’ll be needing them soon.”

My brow moved up in question, “Why-” He didn’t let me finish.

“Marcus is getting married.” My eyes moved up, Triston's little brother? To be married?

“Really?” My voice was filled with something I hadn't had in so long. Excitement.

“Yes.” He looked back at his phone, “They’ll be having a welcome home dinner tomorrow night. Do you think you can handle it?” A smile moved onto my lips,

“Yes-” I said way too loud, “Of course- when will he be coming-”

“I’ve rented them a villa. No need for him to come home and see what my life has become.” A sharp pain ran through my chest. What has his life become? “If you aren’t feeling ill. Make sure to act right.” I stared at him, grabbed my napkin, and cleaned my mouth.

“I will.” I stood up, “Excuse me-”

Triston stopped me, “Iris.” He called my name, “You will not ruin this for him.” I moved around him, staring at the back of his head.

“Of course I won’t, Triston.”

  • Lie   Impossible

I couldn’t sleep. Not a wink, my head was throbbing, my legs were shaking, and my mind was unable to rest. All that I could think of was Triston. My hand moved up to my lips, remembering his. Remembering every touch and caress. It almost returned to how it was before. When we were still in love. I had no doubt in my mind that it was impossible. We would never return to that, not now, not in a year, and probably not in another ten years. I had accepted it, but my heart didn’t seem to. It ached, and cried out wanting him back. Wanting him in bed with me, his smell in my nose, his hands touching me. I was scrolling on my phone, just checking the weather for the day. “Mrs. Ballard?” I turned my head to the door, “I’ve finished packing your bag. Should I make you your morning tea?” Rosy came into the room, a small smile on her face. I moved up my mug, “Beat you to it.” She was astonished, “Thank you, though, please make sure Triston is awake… and have a cup of coffee ready for him?” Sh

  • Lie   I'm Sorry

We giggled as we were dropped off at the front of our home. My arms were held close to me, the cool of the night forcing a shiver down me. Triston held me by my wrist, a different look appearing on his face. Maybe the heavy drinking was getting to him, too. With haste, he pulled us inside our home. The warm air engulfed us, our voices loud in the empty house.I stared into Tristin's eyes. His deep, ocean-dark look in them threatened to swallow me whole. And I would’ve let it.Triston gripped my cheek, his thumb pressing softly into my skin, forming small circles on me. His other hand slipped down the center of my back, brushing over the zipper of my dress. The inside of the house remained silent. A long sigh of fabric gave way as he pulled it down with effortless precision. The dress nearly slipped off me, and my skin felt the warmth of him as he moved his hand to touch me. We were both in such an absurd mood, Triston's hand twisted on the back of my head, pushing me forward. My breath

  • Lie   The End of A Marriage

Three Years AgoIt had been a long day of work, with a camera shoved in my face- filming for some commercial? I think it was a shampoo one… something about making my hair super shiny, but I actually preferred my dandruff-preventing one. I was scrubbing the caked-on makeup, which seemed to never come off. Great for the camera, not so great for someone who wanted it off, like now. “Iris? You looked so good for the shoot.” My stylist, Bell, was behind me, hanging the clothes I had worn. “Why are you rushing? Do you have somewhere to be?” Her voice was cheery as she spoke to me. I nodded before replying, “My wedding anniversary is tomorrow!” I chirped up. She turned her head to me, “Ohhhh, so are we rushing to pick up gifts?” I bit my bottom lip, “Well, I’m thinking of a non-traditional gift. I’m cooking.” I said lightly, “Not something big and fancy-” I was defending myself, “But I’m gonna try to make it all homemade.” I'm not an experienced cook. Our housekeeper usually made dinner,

  • Lie   Act

I stared at myself in the mirror, my eyes red and my lips still quivering as I tried to reapply lip gloss. I looked terrible. Lashes seemed to be holding up, yet the clear tear trails cut down my cheeks. That was unmistakable. I looked like shit. I took out a compact and tried to fix what was wrong, doing my best to lessen the look of my emotions. Finally, I took my clutch, leaving the restroom making my way to the server who was seemingly waiting for me. There was one glass that seemed different, so I picked it up. “Thank you. Keep them coming tonight, please.” I said to the server, who gave me a curt nod, leaving me as I began to take a sip- “Iris?” I heard a voice call out, and I lifted my head to see a smaller woman approaching me. It was Alexandria, someone I had been told about. She had a large smile as she spoke. “I’ve been trying to catch you all night!” I offered her a small smile as I greeted her, “Hello, Alexandria- congratulations on your engagement.” I smiled at h

  • Lie   Tear

My heart was pounding so loudly, my ears were ringing. “You shouldn’t be speaking to me,” I told him, He looked irritated by my words. “Has he taken that from you, too? The power to talk to people-” “That's not it.” I shook my head, “You know that-” “Then you don’t want to speak with me? Say that then.” Oliver looked me down, before he took hold of my hand. “Tell me you don’t want to speak with me.” I was frozen in place at his words. “Tell me that and I will never bug you again.” I felt my lips part open, stuck as I tried to make words.I felt a grip take hold of my wrist. My eyes grew even larger in alarm as I turned my head to face him. Triston stood there, jaw clenched, grip growing harder as he yanked me his way. I was sure I would have been nearly thrown across the room, but Triston’s grip remained, holding onto me. Triston now stood between us, his body like a wall. “Don’t ever touch my wife.” His words seemed to be drawn out as the music remained to keep our confront

  • Lie   Old Fire

"I'm fine," I interrupted, my tone sharp. "No reason to do that. People will wonder why –"“If you get sick-”“Then I’ll take the luggage of pills I have. I’ll be fine.” Triston's eyes flicked up for a moment, and I continued, "I will be okay without a doctor –"“And if you collapse again? We’ll ruin Marcus’s day.” He spoke flatly. I always felt like baggage to him. Something he was forced to haul around. “We cannot have that happen.”“And bringing a doctor will prevent that?” I asked, skeptical. “A doctor will only tell you to send me for more tests. I would still have to wait until after the trip for that.” Triston pressed his lips together, his fingers scrolling slowly."You have to keep up with your medication, then. Make sure you do that," he said, his tone firm.-------------------------------------------We arrived at the restaurant, a fancy establishment that Triston had booked exclusively. He exited the car first, then helped me out, his warm hand supporting me as I stood. I s
