Chapter 3: Shared Heat

The walk from the locker rooms to the Grand Library was a silent, agonizing marathon. Every time Thalen’s stride faltered, Zeyric felt a phantom ache in his own knees. Every time Thalen took a sharp breath, Zeyric’s own lungs felt tight. The bond was no longer a theoretical concept; it was a living, breathing parasite that had burrowed into the marrow of their bones.

The library was nearly empty, the towering shelves of ancient grimoires casting long, skeletal shadows across the mahogany tables. Thalen slammed a heavy tome titled Mana Conductivity and Soul-Resonance onto a desk, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the stillness.

"Sit," Thalen commanded, his voice tight. He didn't look at Zeyric. He didn't look at anything except the flickering candlelight.

"Are you serious right now?" Zeyric asked, his voice shaking as he pulled out a chair. "You’re just going to sit there and act like we weren’t just... like we didn't almost..."

"Almost nothing," Thalen snapped, finally meeting Zeyric’s eyes. His gaze was icy, but Zeyric could feel the heat radiating off him—a pulse of raw, unadulterated nerves that contradicted his calm face. "We have three days until the first practical exam. If you can't even hold a basic kinetic shield without tapping into my reservoir, we’re both going to be expelled by Friday."

"I held the shield because I felt you!" Zeyric shouted, then winced as the librarian, a spectral entity of shifting smoke, hissed from the darkness. He lowered his voice to a jagged whisper. "And I felt you in that ring, Thalen. You let that firebolt hit you. Why?"

"I was testing the range of the sensory feedback," Thalen said, flipping a page so hard the parchment nearly tore. "It’s called data collection, Zeyric. Something you’d understand if you actually opened a book once in a while."

"Bullshit," Zeyric hissed. He leaned across the table, invading Thalen’s space. "I felt what you felt. It wasn't 'data collection.' You wanted to see if I’d hurt. You wanted to see if I was paying attention to you."

Thalen’s fingers froze on the edge of the page. "You have an overactive imagination for someone who can barely summon a puddle."

"And you’re a liar," Zeyric countered. "The bond... it’s like a bell ringing in my head every time you lie. It’s that greasy itch, remember? It’s driving me crazy. Tell me the truth. Why are you hiding that bruise on your ribs? Why is your father hitting you?"

Thalen slammed the book shut and stood up so fast his chair screeched against the stone floor. "Drop it."

"No! My scholarship is tied to your soul now, Thalen! If your 'perfect' family is breaking you down behind closed doors, that affects me. If you’re taking hits on purpose just to feel if I’m 'connected' to you, that affects me!"

"You know nothing about my family," Thalen growled, his face inches from Zeyric’s. "You’re the scholarship kid. The charity case. You get to go back to your little village and be a hero for knowing how to light a candle. I have three centuries of Valerius blood demanding I be a god. My father isn't 'hitting' me. He’s refining me."

"Refining you with his boots?" Zeyric’s voice was thick with disgust. "That’s not magic, Thalen. That’s just being a coward."

In a flash of movement, Zeyric reached out, grabbing Thalen by the collar of his fine silk tunic, intending to pull him closer to force him to look at the reality of his own words.

The moment Zeyric’s knuckles brushed against the skin of Thalen’s throat, the world exploded in a riot of color.

A jolt of silver-blue electricity hummed through Zeyric’s arm, but it wasn't the painful shock of a combat spell. It was a rhythmic, thrumming vibration that resonated in his teeth and settled deep in his gut. He gasped, his grip tightening on Thalen’s shirt, and he saw Thalen’s eyes blow wide, the pupils swallowing the blue irises until they were almost black.

"Zeyric..." Thalen’s voice was a broken thread.

"What is... what is that?" Zeyric breathed. He meant to let go, but his fingers wouldn't move. The sensation was too intense. It was like the warmth he’d felt in the locker room, but magnified a thousand times.

It wasn't just pain they were sharing anymore.

"The feedback loop," Thalen whispered, his breath hitching as he gripped Zeyric’s wrists—not to push him away, but to hold him there. "Your pulse... it’s too fast. It’s making mine accelerate. The bond is... it’s feeding on the adrenaline."

Zeyric felt a wave of heat wash over him that had nothing to do with the library’s fireplace. He could feel Thalen’s arousal—a sharp, sudden spike of desire that hit him like a physical blow. And because Zeyric felt it, his own body responded, a heavy, throbbing ache settling in his loins that sent a corresponding wave of pleasure back to Thalen.

"Stop it," Zeyric groaned, even as he leaned closer, his forehead resting against Thalen’s. "Thalen, make it stop."

"I can't," Thalen rasped. His hands moved from Zeyric’s wrists to his waist, his fingers digging into Zeyric’s hips. "Every time you feel something... I feel it twice as hard. And then you feel my reaction... and it just... it keeps building."

It was a closed circuit of pure sensation. Zeyric’s heart hammered against his ribs, and he felt the echo of it in Thalen’s chest. He felt the way Thalen’s skin was humming, the way the air between them was becoming thick with the scent of sandalwood and something sharper, like ozone before a storm.

"You hate me," Zeyric whispered, his eyes fluttering shut as Thalen’s thumb brushed the small of his back, sending a shiver of pure ecstasy up his spine. "You think I’m... a handicap."

"I do," Thalen breathed, his voice dropping to a low, hungry growl. "I hate how you look at me. I hate how you trip over your own feet. And I hate that I can’t stop thinking about how your laugh felt when I was bleeding on my floor yesterday."

Thalen’s grip tightened, pulling Zeyric flush against him. The contact was electric. Zeyric could feel every muscle in Thalen’s body, the lean strength of him, the frantic rhythm of his heart. The pleasure was becoming unbearable, a mounting pressure that made Zeyric’s head spin.

"Thalen..."

"You think you’re the only one suffering?" Thalen’s voice was jagged with desperation. "I can feel your hunger, Zeyric. I can feel how much you want to ruin me. It’s disgusting. It’s... it’s perfect."

Thalen suddenly whirled, his movements a blur of noble grace and raw, animalistic need. He slammed Zeyric back against one of the massive oak bookshelves. A few books tumbled to the floor, but neither of them noticed.

Zeyric’s back hit the hard wood, and the slight sting of the impact sent a corresponding flash of sharp, spicy pleasure through both of them. Zeyric gasped, his hands flying up to Thalen’s shoulders, his fingers tangling in that silver-blonde hair he’d spent all year pretending to despise.

Thalen pinned him there, his body a heavy weight against Zeyric’s, his forearms locked on either side of Zeyric’s head. He looked like a predator, his face pale and beautiful, his eyes dark with a mix of fury and an ancient, starving hunger.

"You have no idea," Thalen hissed, his face inches from Zeyric’s. "You have no idea what I’ve sacrificed to stay at the top. The hours of torture, the isolation... the way my father looks at me like I’m a tool that’s starting to rust."

"Then let it rust," Zeyric countered, his voice a breathless challenge. "If this is what being a Valerius gets you, then screw it. Screw the trials. Screw your family."

"I can't," Thalen said, his voice cracking. "Because if I fail, they’ll break the bond. They have rituals for that, Zeyric. Cruel ones. They’ll rip my soul away from yours, and it’ll leave us both as husks. I won't let them do that. I won't let them take this... this feeling."

"Then don't let them," Zeyric said, reaching up to cup Thalen’s face. Thalen flinched at the touch, but then leaned into it, a soft, broken sound escaping his throat. "We’re one soul now, remember? You don't have to carry it alone."

Thalen’s gaze dropped to Zeyric’s lips, and the sheer intensity of his desire hit Zeyric like a physical wave, making his knees buckle. Thalen caught him, his hands sliding down to Zeyric’s thighs, lifting him slightly so they were eye-to-eye.

"You’re a disaster, Zeyric," Thalen whispered, his breath hot against Zeyric’s mouth. "A clumsy, incompetent, beautiful disaster. And if I’m going down, I’m taking you with me."

"Then take me," Zeyric breathed.

Thalen didn't hesitate. He leaned in, his lips finally crashing against Zeyric’s in a kiss that tasted like lightning and desperate, long-buried secrets. The bond roared to life, a supernova of shared sensation that threatened to burn them both to ash right there among the silent books.

Zeyric wrapped his legs around Thalen’s waist, pulling him as close as humanly possible, trying to bridge the gap between their two bodies until they were finally, truly, one. The library was silent, but for the two of them, the world was screaming.

Chapter 5: The Shattered LinkThe door to Thalen’s suite didn't just open; it disintegrated. A wave of sickly violet energy ate through the reinforced oak, turning the wood to fine, grey ash that swirled in the sudden, freezing draft from the hallway.Zeyric threw his arm up, shielding his eyes as the dust settled. "Thalen! Stay back!""Stay back?" Thalen’s voice was a low snarl. He stepped in front of Zeyric, his hand already glowing with a jagged, silver-blue light. "In my own room? I don't think so."Standing in the jagged frame of the doorway wasn't a faceless assassin. It was Veyron, his Academy uniform scorched and his eyes rimmed with a manic, unnatural purple glow. Behind him stood three other students, their faces masks of cold, empty obedience. In Veyron’s hand was a curved obsidian dagger, the blade weeping a thick, black smoke."Veyron?" Zeyric choked out, his wand shaking. "What the hell is this? The gates... you did that?""The gates were just the opening act, Puddle-Boy

Chapter 4: The Price of ProtectionThe world outside the stacks of the Grand Library ceased to exist. There was only the rough grain of the oak bookshelf against Zeyric’s back and the suffocating, glorious weight of Thalen pressing into him. Every time Thalen’s lips moved against his, Zeyric felt a double-hit of dopamine—his own, and the sharp, jagged rush of Thalen’s."Thalen, wait," Zeyric gasped, his hands tangling deeper into Thalen’s silver hair. "The librarian... someone will—""I locked the sector wards, Zeyric. Shut up," Thalen muttered against his neck, his voice vibrating through Zeyric’s very bones. "I can feel your heart trying to beat out of your chest. It’s making mine skip. Do you have any idea what that’s doing to me?""It’s doing the same thing to me!" Zeyric arched his back as Thalen’s teeth grazed his collarbone. "I can feel... god, Thalen, I can feel how much you want to ruin me. It’s like a physical pressure."Thalen pulled back just enough to look Zeyric in the e

Chapter 2: A Taste of AgonyThe silence in the corridor was suffocating, broken only by the sound of Thalen’s jagged breathing. He remained slumped against the doorframe, his fingers digging into the wood so hard his knuckles looked like white marble. Zeyric stayed on the floor, his own knees throbbing, but the pain felt strange—magnified and echoed, like a sound bouncing between two mirrors."Are you... are you okay?" Zeyric asked, his voice barely a whisper."Do I look okay?" Thalen spat, though the venom lacked its usual bite. He exhaled a shaky breath, slowly straightening his legs. "Every time you move, it’s like a ghost is tugging at my joints. When you fell... it felt like my own bones were hitting the stone.""I didn't mean to," Zeyric said, pushing himself up. He winced as the raw skin on his palms stung.Thalen hissed, clutching his own hands and staring at his palms as if expecting them to burst into flames. "Stop it. Stop feeling it.""I can't just turn off my nerves, Thal

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 1: The Curse of Partnership

Chapter 1: The Curse of PartnershipThe air in the summoning chamber was thick with the smell of ozone and the metallic tang of failed expectations. Zeyric wiped a smudge of soot from his forehead, his knuckles white as he gripped his charred oak wand."Again, Zeyric," Professor Starwyn said, her voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "Focus on the core. Don't just throw mana at it like you’re tossing trash."Zeyric gritted his teeth, feeling the heat of thirty pairs of eyes on his back. "I’m trying, Professor. It’s just not... clicking.""Clicking?" A silken, mocking voice drifted from the front row. Thalen didn't even turn around; he just sat there, the sunlight hitting his silver-blonde hair like he was some kind of celestial being. "Maybe if you stopped trying to muscle the ether, it would actually listen to you. It's a dance, Zeyric. Not a bar fight.""Nobody asked for the commentary, Thalen," Zeyric snapped, his face flushing a deep, embarrassed red."Just trying to help t
