They say fire is cleansing, a transformative type of destruction. After a forest fire, nature heals and grows stronger. It's forever changed but not destroyed. Fire is painful but beautiful, something that is warm but left unattended can be devastating. In the flames I was broken, destroyed, but in the ashes I was restored. Left floating in the grey, the smoke that led me through a divine transformation. Now I'm left adrift, the dark my only guide in the smoke, the blue of the sky, of his eyes, the only guide in the light. Forever torn and pulled between the two, unsure who I can trust and terrified to make the wrong choice. Not just my life hangs in the balance, but the lives and well being of all of humanity. It just might be too much for these wings to bare.
View MoreThere was fire everywhere I looked. It was suffocating and terrifying. The heat was intense and felt thick in the air. I went to take a breath and coughed at the searing sensation that flooded my lungs. The building was burning fast and I had yet to locate the young girl whose screams drew me into the building in the first place. All I could see was the fiery orange of the flames as they ate away at the building. It was so hot I could almost feel my skin blistering and melting off my body.
“Please help me! Help me!” I heard a shrill scream echo from behind me. I turned quickly to the empty classroom, trying to beat the spreading fire.
“Where are you? I can’t see you!” I called as I entered the room, coughing as the smoke and heat raged on.
“I’m right here. Please help me.” She whimpered as she stepped out from the corner of the room and ran to me, tears staining her small cheeks. She was about eight, with hair as bright as the flames surrounding us and green eyes filled with fear and tears. She clung to my legs so tightly it was a struggle to pry her off and pick her up.
“Please. I’m scared.”
“Shh. I’ll get you out of here,” I murmured panickedly as I held her close and ran through the burning room. I skidded to a halt as I reached the door that I came through, seeing it was blocked by falling debris engulfed in flames. Pivoting, I found a door that wasn’t completely blocked off. I put the young girl down and pushed the blazing boards out of my way, my hands in agony from the developing burns and blisters. I picked her up, ignoring the searing pain in my hands, and kicked the door open, stepping out into the clean cool air that the outside world provided.
As soon as we stepped out of the burning school we were spotted. Cries of relief and help were heard. I shakily moved a safe distance away from the flames before collapsing onto the grass, shielding the young girl as much as I was able from the harsh impact. Through the pounding of blood in my ears I could hear people approaching, and the sound of their panic as they saw the condition we were in.
I cried out in pain as a young man checked me over, the material of his fireproof suit rubbing against my raw, blistering flesh. An older female paramedic was talking to me as she and the firefighter placed me onto a stretcher. I could see her mouth moving but I couldn’t hear the words. I lifted my burnt hand and feebly clutched the fabric of the firefighter’s suit, tugging at it and successfully gaining his attention. He turned his face towards me, crystal blue eyes staring into mine with concern and controlled panic. Black hair framed his face and his jaw was painted with a few days’ worth of stubble. His movements were calm and deliberate, but his eyes divulged his solicitude.
“The girl,” I said weakly. I coughed, my grip loosening as my eyes grew hazy and my body became heavy. “Save the girl.”
“She’s going to be ok. You got her out in time. She had a few burns but she’ll be ok. You are very brave.” He spoke soothingly as his blue eyes bore into my hazel ones.
I nodded and smiled faintly, glad that I managed to save the child. The pain in my body subsided as I felt exhaustion taking over.
“Hey, stay with me. Fight it. Stay with me.” The firefighter spoke firmly,as he clutched my jaw lightly, forcing me to look at him. “Tell me your name.” I couldn’t look away, even if I wanted to, those blue eyes holding me captive.
“Haven,” I whispered before my chest seized from the charred air I inhaled, burning as I was placed in the back of the ambulance.
“I’m James. Haven, you need to let go of me. They have to take you to the hospital.” James spoke, his words not making sense. I couldn’t feel my body; couldn’t move it. Everything was going black.
I could hear the paramedics telling James to sit in the corner and not move. I could feel a distant pain as they touched my skin. I could smell my burnt flesh, my burnt hair, and I could taste the smoke on my tongue… but the only thing I could see was James’s blue eyes piercing the veil of darkness that was obscuring my vision.
“Save the girl. Save the girl” I choked out, knowing already that I couldn’t be saved.
“Haven! Stay with me!” James yelled, jolting up from his position in the corner and coming to my side as his eyes shone with a silent plea. I stared at him as the pain faded, my vision waning. I held his beautiful blue gaze until it all faded; until I could hear, feel, taste, see and smell no more. Everything faded until there was nothing but darkness.
Hello Everyone I'm not sure if anyone even reads this story but unfortunately, I will be putting this one on hiatus until my The Moon and Sun Series is finished. I do intend to finish it as it's a story I very much want to share with people but it's not a priority right now. Sorry to anyone who reads it and sees this as I know how disappointing this can be as a reader. I just ask that you be patient with me and I assure you that as soon as I am able I will come back to this story and continue with it for everyone's enjoyment. Thank you for understanding Cheers
“Hello? Ah, James, Haven is sleeping right now. Can I take a message? Yes, she mentioned something about going to your place. No, it was a rough day at therapy, she needed to come home and just decompress after all of that. I don’t know if she’s still feeling up to it but I will ask her and get her to call you back.” I groaned as the sound of Ezra talking woke me up, sighing as I realized he was speaking to James. That would just further Jame’s preconceived notions about Ezra and I. I sat up from my position, lying wrapped in Ezra’s arms and looked at him as he handed me my phone that was still open to James’s call. I took it and placed it to my ear with a small sigh. “James, sorry I hadn’t intended on falling asleep.” “It’s fine, Haven. Are you ok? Ezra said that you had a rough appointment today.” His voice was
I sat in my car after therapy and sighed heavily. Today was a harder session. She could tell I was holding stuff back and I just didn’t feel like divulging much, my mind still a jumbled mess from this morning and all of last night's events. I felt like I wasn’t putting my all in and wasn’t getting what I wanted from it. She advised me that for the next session I tell her what was weighing on me today so she can properly help me. I closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths, my head back and the radio playing softly. I breathed evenly and just sat in silence for a while before sitting up and turning on the car, heading to my next appointment for my physio. This one was slightly more enjoyable. I didn’t ache as much and I could do the exercises quickly compared to when I first started. My physiotherapist was convinced today would be my last session. I guess turning into something different had its perks. St
“Stop Ezra. Why are you acting like this all of a sudden? You haven't done anything like this in all the time I’ve known you.” I watched him, a small frown on his face as his grey eyes darkened like a storm. “I’ve seen the way James looks at you and how you look at him. You have no future with him. He’s the type that wants the whole package, marriage, kids, family home, all of it. You can’t give him any of that. You are ageless Haven, you will never change, you can not have children. You have no chance at a future with James. That is what I’m trying to point out to you.” His voice was steady, with no emotion or inflection, just deadpan honest monotone words. I frowned and pushed against his chest, pushing him away from me and stepping out into the kitchen, putting the counter between us as I turned to face him. I was angry, annoyed, irritated and damn near ev
I stretched and yawned, turning in my bed and rolling over to see Ezra asleep beside me. His face was relaxed and soft in his sleep, his chest fell and rose with his even breathing and I may have felt a little creepy watching him sleep but it’s not like I had the opportunity to be this close to him and observe him in private. He was very handsome, with a strong jaw, full lips, high cheekbones, and his black hair was a little longer than when I first saw him. He was broad-shouldered and muscular, his hand rough and calloused, his chest and abdomen well-muscled and had a defined v. I felt like a creep but I couldn’t deny I liked what I saw. “It’s rude to stare you know.” His voice was soft with a hint of laughter as my eyes shot up to his to see his grey eyes bright and full of mirth. I flushed and shook my head at him. “My bed, my rules.” I teased back with a
The fire was roaring in my ears, the flames higher than my head and around me in a complete circle, the shadows behind the fire obscured and barely visible between the flickering or the flames, the loud inhuman shrieks overridden by the waves. I turned in a circle, my heart pounding, and my breathing ragged. I lifted my hands over my mouth to combat the choking smoke that felt like its thick ashy tendrils were crawling down my throat. I coughed and blinked away the tears as my eyes watered, grunting and cowering away from the flames and the wisps of it reached for me, burning my clothes and singing my skin. I screamed in fear seeing the flames lower slightly and the dark monstrous creatures beyond, arched and deformed with sharp teeth and claws, the stuff of nightmares and fear. I screamed and thrashed as one of them grabbed me from behind, it’s claws digging into my shoulders and tearing skin as it shook me and opened it’s jaws to rip out my throat.
