Chapter 1

“Help! Someone’s broken in! I’m locked in the tower!”

I curled up in the corner, trembling as I called the Underboss’s encrypted private line.

The commotion in the west wing was growing louder. The wooden staircase creaked under the weight of approaching footsteps, and I could faintly hear low voices and the clatter of metal.

The call connected.

“Family Security. State your emergency.”

“Someone has broken into the estate! The tower door has been locked from the outside. I can’t get out—”

I had barely given them my location when there was a pause on the other end. Then a familiar, icy voice replaced the operator’s.

“Ma’am, the Godfather already gave us instructions. If you contacted us tonight, it must be because you’re throwing another fit at him.”

My entire body went rigid.

“I’m not throwing a fit! Someone really has broken in!”

“The side door in the west wing was forced open. I can hear them clearly. Please, send someone over—”

The other person cut me off impatiently.

“Ma’am, the security line isn’t here for entertainment. We have a legitimate security operation to handle.”

The line went dead.

I stared at the darkened communicator, my fingers stiff and numb.

A second later, the door downstairs was slammed open.

Then came the rapid thud of footsteps heading straight for the staircase.

Cold sweat trickled down my temple. I cautiously slipped behind the curtains and immediately called back.

“I’m not joking! Please send someone! They’re almost upstairs—”

“Ma’am, the Godfather instructed us that you might deliberately cause a disturbance tonight just to get his attention.”

“Beep—”

The call was cut off again.

An encrypted message appeared moments later.

It was from Lockard:

[Valentina, it’s just one night. Do you really have to make such a scene?]

[I’m only going over to celebrate Camilla’s birthday. Do you really have to make enough noise to alarm everyone downstairs?]

[If you keep this up, I’m not coming home tonight.]

I stared at those few lines, my throat so tight that I couldn’t make a sound.

The intruders were real.

And I really was running out of time.

But Security didn’t believe me.

No.

It was Lockard who had made sure they wouldn’t.

I clenched my teeth and called the family doctor’s private number instead.

“Medical emergency line. How may I—”

“Help me… The estate is under attack. I’m trapped in the tower. Someone is coming upstairs… Please, send someone…”

The operator quickly began recording my information.

“Please provide your location.”

I had barely finished when the operator fell silent for several seconds. When they spoke again, their tone had suddenly become cautious.

“Ma’am, the system shows two suspected false alarm reports from you. We need Don Vito’s personal confirmation before we can activate the emergency protocol.”

My voice trembled from the sheer panic coursing through me.

“I didn’t make a false report! I’m really locked in here! Someone is coming up—”

“Please hold.”

The line remained connected.

A few seconds later, another channel opened. There was noise in the background—an orchestra playing, glasses clinking, and laughter from people raising their drinks.

Then I heard Lockard’s voice come through the line.

“Is that Valentina?”

The operator asked, “Don, Mrs. Valentina reports that the estate is under attack. She’s trapped in the tower—”

“She’s throwing another tantrum.” Lockard interrupted coldly. “Don’t activate the emergency protocol. Just keep watch on the perimeter.”

“Understood, Don.”

I gripped the communicator tightly, listening to my own ragged, trembling breaths.

The footsteps had reached the door.

Heavy blows crashed against the wooden panels, making the entire door shudder. There was nowhere left to hide behind the curtains. The hallway lights cast several shifting silhouettes across the stairwell.

If I stayed here, I would be trapped and killed.

I rushed into the tower’s sitting room and grabbed a brass candlestick, smashing it against the window.

Crash!

Stained glass shattered across the floor.

This was the third floor. Below was a stretch of shrubs in the estate’s rear garden.

If I jumped, I could break my bones.

If I didn’t, I would die here.

I climbed onto the window frame and shouted down,

“Help! Someone has broken in! Somebody—”

Servants in the garden looked up. A gardener stopped what he was doing. Someone in the distance blew a whistle to raise the alarm.

Behind me, the door was slammed hard.

A crack split along the wooden panel, and light spilled through the opening.

I had no time left.

I gritted my teeth, climbed onto the windowsill, twisted the heavy curtains into a rope, and gripped it tightly.

Then I closed my eyes and threw myself over the edge.

The curtains pulled taut in midair before slipping from my hands.

The instant my back slammed into the bushes, agonizing pain exploded through my entire body as though I had been crushed beneath a truck. A sickening, tearing impact shot through my lower leg and abdomen at the same time, and darkness swallowed my vision.

Chaos erupted around me.

“Call the doctor!”

“There really are intruders by the tower!”

“The lady is bleeding!”

I lay on my back among broken branches and loose soil, barely able to move.

Something warm trickled down between my legs.

Before I completely lost consciousness, I was still clutching the communicator in my hand.

Lockard’s messages were still displayed on the screen.

Before winter arrived, I moved out of that manor.I replaced all the furniture and removed everything that reminded me of the past.Nina came to help me move. The moment she stepped inside, she clicked her tongue.“Now this finally looks like a place someone can actually live in.”I placed the last box of books down and straightened up.“Get your own water.”She tossed her coat aside and leaned against the sofa while scrolling through her communicator. Suddenly, she looked up.“Tell you something.”“What?”“The Family Security Command turned Lokard’s case into an internal warning case study.” She turned the communicator toward me. “The first lesson of new recruit training uses those two recordings.”On the screen was a screenshot of an internal notice. The final line stood out especially clearly:Every distress call must be taken seriously. No one is allowed to interfere with security procedures because of personal relationships or emotions.Nina laughed.“For a man who was once the Go

The verdict came quickly. The marriage dissolution was officially approved. The arbitration court determined that Lockard had committed serious misconduct, including violence, malicious interference with emergency rescue procedures, and severe violations of his spouse’s right to life and personal safety. The final ruling was as follows:The marriage was dissolved. The estate was awarded to me.Lockard was responsible for all medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost income compensation, emotional damages, and compensation related to the miscarriage. His major family accounts, vehicles, and dividend assets would be prioritized for enforcement. All asset preservation requests submitted by my side were approved. At the same time, the family guards’ disciplinary announcement was released. It was not a suspension. It was not a simple reassignment. It was—The removal of his position as Godfather, the cancellation of all command authority, and his expulsion from the family guards. The ann

After the hearing ended, the moment we stepped out of the arbitration court, Camilla suddenly rushed out.Her face was pale and sallow, her hair completely unkempt. It was obvious that she had been living miserably these past few days.“Lockard!”She lunged forward, trying to grab him, but the enforcement officers immediately stopped her.“You can’t admit everything! If you take all the blame, what happens to me?”“The arbitration court ruled that I was a co-offender! The Council of Elders is making me share the compensation costs! I’ve lost my position, and the family accounts have been frozen. You promised you would protect me!”Lockard slowly raised his head and looked at her.His eyes were terrifyingly empty.“Protect you?”He suddenly let out a laugh.A cold, bitter laugh.“You were the one who kept saying she was pretending.”“You were the one standing beside the medical emergency line telling them not to send anyone.”“You were the one who stole her mother’s bracelet and sold it

Half a month later, the marriage dissolution case was officially brought before the family arbitration court.A large crowd had gathered outside the courthouse. The moment Nina and I stepped out of the car, I saw Lockard being escorted over from the other side by two family enforcement officers. He was no longer wearing the black formal attire of the Godfather. He was dressed only in a dark coat, his beard unshaven, looking as though he had aged ten years overnight. The once proud and powerful family Godfather was gone.Lockard’s mother rushed toward me, her eyes red and her voice sharp with anger.“Valentina! Are you satisfied now that you’ve ruined Lockard?”Nina immediately stepped in front of me.“This is the arbitration court.”But Lockard’s mother continued crying out.“What marriage doesn’t have mistakes? Can’t you just give him one more chance?”I looked at her, my voice calm.“A mistake?”“Locking me inside the tower, ordering the family guards not to rescue me beforehand, tel

Three days later, I was discharged from the medical facility. The first thing I did was go with Nina to the family arbitration court to give my official statement.Outside the hearing room, I heard a woman’s sharp cries coming from inside.“I didn’t mean to! I really didn’t mean to!”When the enforcement officer opened the door and let me in, Camilla was sitting in a chair. Her hair was messy, her makeup was ruined, and she looked completely different from the delicate and fragile woman she had pretended to be before. The moment she saw me, she stood up, her voice changing instantly.“Valentina, what exactly do you want from me? It was just a bracelet. I already said I would return it to you!”I placed my bag on the table, took out several photographs, and laid them down one by one.The first photo was a screenshot from the family’s private social channel on the night of the banquet. Camilla was wearing a jade bracelet on her wrist. The second was a photograph of my mother wearing the

The next morning, the hospital room door was pushed open. This time, it wasn’t Lockard. It was an investigator from the family arbitration court, accompanied by two enforcement officers from the family guards. The man in front displayed the family crest.“Mrs. Valentina, we are here to verify the details of what happened.”Nina stood up and stepped aside, giving them the space. After taking a seat, the investigator spoke directly.“We have recovered all communication records, encrypted calls, and the command logs from the family guard system. We can now confirm that before the incident occurred, Lockard used his authority as Godfather to issue improper orders within the duty channel, directly affecting the family guards’ emergency response process.”He placed the printed documents in front of me and read them word by word.“Valentina will cause trouble tonight. Hold all communications from her first.”“If she reports an attack on the estate, do not dispatch anyone immediately.”“Call b
