Karel I stood long on the doorway, counting my breaths. It's been ten minutes since I came and I couldn't go in. Not yet. My hands hovered around the door knob. My breathing went louder with each second. Coach had told me to apologise to Ferdi. Just like that. I should apologise for what I don't even know about. ‘And ‘maybe’ he was going to give you back your position’ I'd laughed dry at the coach but now I wasn't even smiling anymore. This was for soccer. Nothing else. With one deep breath I walked in. Ferdi sat across his table, scribbling things on his paper. He turned when he noticed me, and I swore I did a mind check for not running away. His lips curled up a bit. I unconsciously bit my lips. “I came to apologise,” My voice didn't betray me. Thank goodness. His lazy lashes swept past me to the door, then back to me again. I cursed out. Now I'm invisible, after all my warmups to stand in front of him. “Then do it.” His voice came out cutting, cold liquid ran down m
¶ Karel ¶ The cold air did nothing to my sweating palms. I found my way back home, flinching at any slight noise around. I stumbled four times on thorns, it still didn't wake me up. Ferdi text still fresh in my brain after the cops were gone. “Two. Mark it on your skin if you have to. So you don't forget who owns them.”Now I owe him something without asking him for anything. Bastard. It was past 2am when I got home. Turned in the keys and entered. I halted mid step when Trenton came in view. His gaze swept my bloody clothes, then my face. He didn't speak. His eyes already said it all. He poured another glass for himself. Making the empty bottle on the floor eight. I scrunched my nose up and headed for my room. Then I heard his dragging voice. “Why did you come back? You should 've stayed where you were.” I bit my tongue till it ached. I wanted to ignore him and just walk off but I turned. “What I do is none of your business. Don't interfere in my mess, I've gotten enough today, Tr
¶ Karel ¶ My chest felt tight as I walked out the door. None of it felt right. None of it was. I walked away, my spot still dangling in his fingers with that smug smile on his face. Every few steps I slowed, half expecting him to call me back. He didn't Somehow that felt worse. My throat got too dry to even scream into the cold night air and the heat crawling into my skin wasn't helping either. The night air cooled my face but it couldn't cool whatever he'd left inside my head.I ducked into one of the stalls. That's the only way I could get it off me. I ran the water in the stall and tried to wash it off me. Five minutes I was good. But when I stepped out, it returned. I was hard again. Fuck. Am I in heat or something? I didn't mind, just went into the night, without direction or location in mind. I rubbed my palms against my jeans like I could erase the feeling. Dael called. Voice high pitched like she'd been watching animation. “Karel? You didn't come. You're alright?" I it
¶ Karel ¶ My feet moved on auto pilot because I actually never wanted to go there. Never wanting to even look at the message. But he said he'd give back my position, that's why I'm doing nothing else. I told myself, as I counted the steps to the equipment building. Every step echoed through the empty hallway. I could still turn around. No one would know I was here. Including Ferdi. The image of the roster flashed in my head. My name was gone. My feet kept moving. The dim light in the passage went on. Then footsteps. It wasn't Ferdi. I know because I've got it in my stupid brain that failed to comply. Just as I was about to turn left, I bumped into Zayne. “Watch out–” he started, but eyes turned cold when he saw me. “Karel?"I suddenly felt like itching my head. My lips pressed into a thin line. My jaw clenched unintentionally when I perceived Ferdi's cologne on him. “What are you doing here?” Zayne emptied the silence. I just knew he'd talk first. Always the one to ask questions
¶ Ferdi ¶ I watched Karel leave school like he was being chased. He kept one hand inside his hoodie pocket like he was protecting something. His shoulders were tight, every step too fast, like home was another punishment waiting for him. It only doubled my curiosity about that little rascal. That's why I've been on my phone, sending tons of messages just to get blocked. There was just something about his glassy emerald eyes and mint scent with full ginger hair I dreamt of cutting. It made me want to press him to a corner and watch his begging eyes and sharp mouth. The problem was my brain. The doctor called it "whatever processing impairment". Dad called it useless. The therapist asked me what I felt when mom died. I stared at the wall. "Nothing," She asked again and I told her the wallpaper was ugly. But anger? Jealousy? It came through clear as glass. That's why Karel was dangerous. He made static feel like noise. And I hated noise.I hated that when he walked past me with D
¶ Karel ¶ Every step hurt. My ribs protested each time I breathed. The whistle blew again, but my legs refused to move faster. Jogging now felt too heavy because of the phone in my pocket. Ferdi's text still hung open there. I opened the message for what seemed like the twentieth time. I owe him? Some gift cards or promos? I clicked my tongue sharply against my teeth, cursing out, tightening my grip on the rope with each word. I didn't bother replying, just deleted his number, without a second thought. Dael's strong arms hung over my shoulder. She looked at me longer than usual. Too long like she could tell something was wrong. “Slacking off this early?" She breathed loudly. “Not yet, but soon.” I replied without looking up. Because if I do, Dael would totally read me like a book. “Dude, sure you're okay?" Her light voice came to my ears but the loud screams took my attention. Almost all the students crowded the field like it was some giveaway party. They suddenly stopped ta
