Zerah

Her words rang, voice wooden and final.

I was stunned in place, the words I was about to say stuck in my throat.

What was she saying?

"W..What? What do you mean by that, you told me–"

“You're mistaken ,” she snapped, making me rear back.

“I have no idea what you're talking about. I didn't tell you anything and you didn't promise me anything. It's better you forget and drop this before you get us both in trouble.”

Soon after, she wrapped her arms around her body like she was cold. It was summer.

The anxiety that had brought me here made my gut twist. She was afraid, and I wanted to do anything I could to help her.

“Listen, Elena. I know you're scared—

“You don't know anything, Zerah," she cut me off again, voice sharper if not for the crack,

“Not about me or what I'd been through. Not about the pain, the desperation. The suffocating feeling about being in a situation where you can't get out. You don't know about how it feels when every single door in your life is sl

ZerahThe room was still quiet, the air heavy. I stared at the screen for a second longer, trying to piece everything together. But one thing kept bothering me, itching at the back of my mind like a splinter. Why didn’t anyone speak up? Robinson must have done something, that part was obvious. All of this wasn’t a coincidence, it was planned, calculated.I turned to Alex.“You saw what happened,” I said, looking him straight in the eyes. “Why didn’t you say anything? Why didn’t anyone?”He looked away, rubbed the back of his neck, like he was already tired of this conversation.Well I wasn’t, and I wanted an answer and I'm sure as hell not leaving without one.“I mean, everyone saw what happened. He was with these women, whoring around. Someone must’ve seen it,” I continued. “All those people in the club… and not a single soul said anything?”Alex sighed deeply, like I’d just dragged a memory he’d buried under a pile of guilt.“The next morning, after it all went down,” he started s

Zerah I followed behind Alex, my eyes scanning the hallway as he led me out back. He didn’t say a word at first, just kept walking. We passed a heavy looking steel door, and he pushed it open with ease. I stepped in right after him, and the scent of liquor and old wood hit me. The place looked like a giant drink vault, shelves stacked high with every type of alcohol I could think of. Everything sat in place. He bent down and pushed a few crates aside. The space behind them was tight, and for a second I wondered if he was leading me into some trap. But then another door came into view. Smaller and very well hidden. Why would they hide it? He gave me a quick glance over his shoulder. “Come on.” I did and as we walked, he started talking, just casually like we were old friends or something. “You know, when he first came in here, Mr. Davidson.” He clarified, “He was a real ass.” "Really?” I asked. “Yeah,” he said with a small scoff, “Like every other rich guy who thinks money ma

Zerah I woke up with a weird kind of energy in my chest. Not excitement, more like determination. Real, heavy determination.I sat up slowly, still wrapped in my sheets. Today was a weekend. Saturday to be exact. It felt surreal. All of that chaos had happened within a few days. And it was far from the end.Everything that happened yesterday kept playing in my head, the parking lot, the flash drive, Robinson’s men smashing it, Ryker's apology.I pushed away that last thought, looking at my closed laptop where the video file remained. I had gotten the evidence to help Emilia and get rid of Robinson's propped reputation. It wasn't enough. The video was good proof of Robinson's misconduct and blackmail to Elena. But what did that have to do with Ryker? Nothing, not directly. If I really wanted to help clear Ryker’s name, I’d need something that tied to him, to that night. And I had to find it fast.My hands clean ved around the sheets. He had admitted his mistakes to me last night, bu

ZerahI froze in place, my heart skipping a beat. I could tell he did as well. Shock wracked me as I processed the sight of him.His tall frame filled the space, hand was raised halfway to the door, like he was about to knock.I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my breath catching in my throat. When did he come back? What was he doing here, at my doorstep? What did he want? A million questions swirled in my mind, but I couldn't form any words. It felt like a dangerous case of Deja Vu. Only last night, this situation happened, him drunk and me, angry. He'd once sworn to never touch my bedroom doorstep after that one drunken night six years ago, yet now he'd come to it not once but twice.Unlike last night however, there was no rancid stench of alcohol. No half lidded, unstable frame. His eyes were clear. He wasn't drunk and didn't seem to have touched a lock of alcohol. Good. The confirmation made my gaze roam even further. His shirt was wrinkled, a far cry from the pristine lo

ZerahThe drive back to my home, if one could call it that, seemed to span an eternity in the silence. My hands were tightly clenched around the steering wheel. The echoes of the panic I'd felt in the parking lot earlier still rang through me. I couldn't deny that I was slightly shaken, but it wasn't jarring. Not when i'd expected it. Not when I'd already been warned.FLASHBACK: THE COFFEE SHOP I stood up to leave when Elena suddenly grabbed my arm. “Wait,” she said, her voice more urgent. My breath hitched as she pulled me back, leaning in.“Sit down.” She whispered an urgency in her tone that made me alarmed. What was wrong? My gut coiled in anxiety as I obeyed.“There's no way he doesn't know about this meeting. With the people following me, he… he'll probably have predicted why I'm here.” she said, her expression shifting into something unreadable.“If he knows, then he might go after you. He might try to take...” she trailed off, but the insinuation was clear. My skin pric

Zerah My gut tightened at her words. Before I could reassure her, she raised her hand with a bitter smile. “I know it won't, this is just a precaution. I'm grateful for this and for you…but I'm still selfish, and I have my fears and doubts. If it comes crashing down, not just me but my family will be hurt. I have no doubt that he's capable of that,” she said, “So please, on the probability that this doesn't pan out and he wins, I need you to promise me that nobody will know that I'm involved. We never spoke of this and I never gave you that drive. Even when this goes public, promise me that I'll remain anonymous. Can you do that?” I stood there, frozen, as Elena's words hung in the air. As I looked into her eyes, I saw the depth of her anxiety. The decision solidified. I had promised to help her and protect her. I also had to ensure that she wasn't caught in the crossfire. I nodded. “I promise. You'll remain anonymous,” I promised sincerely. There was the question of what e
