Elise's POV

0

Leia's voice echoes around the room and Sammi and I both snap to attention.

0

"Come on, he's in the woods. Echo and Tai found him out there."

0

"What do you mean he's lost his mind?" I ask as we run through the packlands and into the forest.

0

"You'll see," Angie yells as she trails behind us.

0

My heart is pounding, we could go so much faster if we shifted, but we are trying to make sure Angie isn't lost out here.

0

There’s a clearing behind the old church ruins. It sits on the backside of our lands and I stop dead in my tracks when we get there. Echo and Tai are signaling us to keep quiet as they quietly look into the clearing.

0

"Shhh, we found him here like this," Echo whispers.

0

"What the hell is he doing?" Sammi asks and we all stare at him.

0

Josh is standing barefoot in the center of a scorched circle of earth, grinning like he's possessed. In his hands he's holding something like it's a sacred gift. It's some kind of marble or orb. I can't get a good look at it, but it looks black and there is blood red light coming from it.

0

"What is that?" Angie asks.

0

"I have no idea, is he talking to it?"

0

There's a low humming that vibrates and it makes my teeth ache. Light is slithering below it, almost like something is alive and trapped inside, shifting, watching.

0

"Josh!" Sammi yells and I try and pull her back. "He's my mate, Elise, let me go!" She shrugs my arm away and steps out of the shadows. "Josh, what the hell are you doing?"

0

He looks up slowly, pupils dilated into pinpricks. "She says I'm chosen," he says almost dreamlike. "It wants to keep testing me."

0

"Testing you?" I ask and he just stares back at the orb. "This isn't a game Josh. Stop screwing around. You're scaring us."

0

Josh laughs and it's wild and unsettling. "She's showing me things. Power. Freedom. All I have to do is pass the tests."

0

"Is he screwing around? This isn't funny." Angie says and Echo and Tai get closer to him.

0

"I don't think this is a joke," I say and Sammi goes to reach out to him and she's suddenly tossed back as flames erupt at Josh's feet. They are blue and rise up like they are licking at his legs. He doesn't flinch, instead he walks through them like they aren't there.

0

I hear Echo growl, he has half transformed and I notice that Tai's claws are out. "This is bad. It's not a joke."

0

"It's using him," Angie says, "It's seeing how far it can push him. How much of Josh it can break before taking over."

0

"What are you talking about?" Sammi asks frantic as she watches her mate.

0

"It's like a movie I saw once, it's like he's being possessed."

0

The orb starts to pulsate and Josh turns to a tree and raises one hand. He reaches up and without touching it a huge branch cracks like thunder and his smile widens.

0

"That will crush all of us if it falls!" I say and Sammi yells out.

0

"We have to stop him! The longer he holds it the more it rewrites him!"

0

We know we can't rush at him, and Sammi slowly moves towards him again.

0

"Josh, please look at me."

0

He hesitates but still has an eerie grin.

0

"Josh, this isn't you. You're my mate, I know you feel it in there. I know you do."

0

His insane grin falters.

0

"Please," Sammi reaches out her hand and the pulsing of the orb gets stronger and Josh gasps, clutching it tight and he falls to his knees, trembling.

0

"She says you're lying. She says you're afraid of me and you will reject me. She says you want to steal the orb and have the power to yourself."

0

"No, Josh. The Goddess made me for you. Please just drop that thing and feel our bond!"

0

The orb's light starts to get brighter, blinding almost, and then it speaks. Through Josh. A thousand voices in one.

0

"He is almost mine."

0

With that Echo lunges into the air and tackles Josh to the ground, pinning him down. I dive forward, grabbing Josh's arm, the one with the orb, and I try and force it from his hand. Tai joins me and Sammi touches Josh's chest.

0

The orb shrieks and Josh loosens his hand enough for me to pull it away from him and I toss it on the ground.

0

Josh looks up at all of us, looking confused, and then collapses, unconscious but breathing.

0

"We need to get him back."

0

"What do we do about that thing?" Angie asks, pointing at the small obsidian ball.

0

"Don't touch it. Echo and I will sit here until Alpha Roman and Beta Lucas get here. They'll know what to do," Leia says. "Tai can you carry Josh back to the packlands?"

0

He nods and carefully lifts up Josh, whose limbs are lifeless.

0

We make it back to the pack hospital in record time and Tai lays Josh down on a cot. My father and Lucas join us and we try our best to explain what happened.

0

They both look puzzled.

0

"Ok, we will go out to Echo and Leia. By the way, have any of you seen Jack or Leo today?"

0

None of us have.

0

"They were going to run some errands in town I think," I say and my father looks angry.

0

"Get them back here right now, you understand? They are in deep shit with me. They should have checked in."

0

I nod and instantly mind link Leo.

0

Leo's POV

0

"How much further?" I ask and Jack fiddles with his phone.

0

"Like, twenty minutes. We're almost there."

0

"You two better get back here quick. Something's wrong with Josh. You won't believe what happened! And my dad and Lucas are pretty furious with you too."

0

"Looks like we are in hot water," I say and Jack smiles.

0

"We always are," he chuckles.

0

"Something up with that Josh kid too," I say and Jack gets stiff.

0

"I don't like that kid. He's not wired right," he says.

0

We make our way to the pack and head to the hospital. I sit down beside Elise. Sammy is beside Josh's bed.

0

"So what happened?" I ask and they explain almost frantically the events.

0

"It was testing him," Jack says quietly, "he's been acting really reckless all week. Like he had some kind of death wish. Whatever that thing was, it was seeing how much danger he'd put himself in, and others. I think it was testing him before it fully took control."

0

"What if he passed the test?" Sammi asks with tears in her eyes.

0

"My guess is he won't be Josh anymore," I answer, "He'd be hers."

0

None of us say what we are all thinking. Where is it now? What if there are more out there? How many would pass the test and be taken over?

0

But there's one fact that only Jack and I know and Jack mind links me.

0

You gonna tell them about the books? The patterns? You're connected to this Leo. What if the thing was meant for you?

  • Lost Heir of the Pack   Chapter 61

Mike and his other friend walked out of the room to let me get changed in peace, which honestly surprised me coming from Mike! I almost expected him to stay to watch me change, but he thankfully followed the other man outside. I shuddered when I realized he probably would've stayed if the other bandit hadn't been there. I threw on the dress, feeling somewhat uneasy by its tightness, which made the velvety fabric cling onto my feminine curves. I wasn't flat, but I wasn't too curvatious either. I was just average. But still, I didn't like how body-hugging the dress was, not to mention the neckline was showing a little too much skin for my taste. Grimacing as I looked at my reflection in the mirror, I tried to pull at the fabric in an attempt to cover my chest as much as I could, but my cleavage was still apparent."Well..." I half-heartedly mumbled, running my fingers against the soft skirt. "At least, the lower part of the dress is pretty." The skirt was flowy, but thankfully not pu

  • Lost Heir of the Pack   Chapter 60

What did you say about my Dad?!" I exclaimed, immediately joining the two men."That's none of your business, bitch!" Spat Mike, threateningly stepping in front of Anton."As long as it concerns my father, that is." I calmly yet firmly objected. Mike took a few steps toward me, looking down at me. Despite being shorter than him of a few inches, I coldly held his gaze without showing any fear. Honestly, I was way too infuriated and in need of answers about my father to even care about what he'd do or say."Lesson number one, bitch!" Groaned the masked man. "When I tell you something, you don't talk back to me!""Tell me what you were saying about my father." I insisted, apparently unfazed."I told you no talking back, bitch!" Yelled Mike, starting to loose his composure."Oh, you were talking to me?" I defiantly asked, raising my chin slightly. "Well I'm sorry, I didn't understand, I thought you were talking to someone named bitch! My name's Joan." Mike's shoulders shook as he gr

  • Lost Heir of the Pack   Chapter 59

Shit! I just couldn't believe I had miscalculated the height of the building! Now, I was free falling, maybe to my freedom but also maybe to my death! Clawing toward the window sill, I tightly closed my eyes and readied for the hard impact. But nothing came. Instead of feeling my bones breaking in impossible angles against the concrete floor, I felt something warm, large and smooth wrap itself around my hand. Opening my eyes, I saw I wasn't falling anymore. Looking up, I met the dark brown eyes of Anton Carmichael. The latter had managed to slip his arm through the narrow window just in time to catch me."Don't let go, Miss MacCarthy!" He whisper-yelled, his voice sounding almost reassuring in the dark."As if I was going to let go!" I forced myself to tease him back, though I was scared he'd let me fall and break my neck. Actually, even though I considered struggling to break free from his grip for a few seconds, I immediately rejected that idea. Doing that would probably kill me

  • Lost Heir of the Pack   Chapter 58

This is a dangerous game, but I'm gonna win it! That's with that new mantra in mind that I welcomed him inside his room. That bedroom was maybe a cage and I maybe felt like an animal in cage, but I was far to be tamed. Actually, I felt like a lion in its cage, waiting to devour whoever would dare to get inside in the naive perspective of taming it. The black wooden door was pushed open and he emerged from the shadows of the hallway."Crap!" Commented Anton, who blended in perfectly with the obscurity. "It's dark in there!" With that, the criminal switched the light on, a warm light suddenly inoundating the room. My light green eyes squinted at its sudden brightness, but I still could see him standing in the room. He seemed to have recovered from the slap I gave him, but the purple bruise left by my punch was still visible on his sharp cheekbone. His hair was a little bit messier than it was when he last left and he had removed his leather jacket. Aside from it, he wasn't very diffe

  • Lost Heir of the Pack   Chapter 57

Even though I was relieved not to be locked up in a basement anymore, I was still rather unhappy to know he planned to keep me in his room. How was I supposed to escape if he always was around? Passing through his gang would already be enough of a difficult matter, if I had to worry about having him around all the time too, I wasn't close of escaping! Plus, I needed to keep in mind who I was messing with: Anton Carmichael! The uncatchable criminal who was known for his insanity and cruelty. A terrible thought twisted painfully my belly. Maybe I was too enthousiastic when I assumed his room would be any better than a basement! Oh no, I hope he wasn't planning to tie me up to his bed with some ropes and leave me in the dark all day! But being alone in the dark would still be better than..."Miss MacCarthy, this way please." Politely instructed me Anton, taking my hand to gently pull me toward another flat of stairs. I followed him toward the wooden stairs, watching the photos on the

  • Lost Heir of the Pack   Chapter 56

The men who pinned me down after my first attempt to escape stood up and picked me up from the ground, holding my wrists behind my back as if I was handcuffed. They pushed me forward to urge me to start walking and I obeyed, only struggling out of instinct. I would've tried to struggle a little harder if I wasn't knocked down by what I just found out. I had been kidnapped by Anton Carmicheal, the bloodthirsty lunatic who gave almost everyone nightmares. Everyone but me. Of course, having always been raised in a coccoon, I had a peaceful sleep and a carefree lifestyle because I was always convinced I was out of evildoers grip thanks to my father's political reputation and the high-tech alarm installed in our house. "Come on, bitch!" Urged me one of my captors, his cheap beer-scented breath attacking my nostrills. "Keep going!""My name's Joan." I coldly corrected him, thoigh fear made my voice quiet. "Not bitch." I first expected him to punch me, but he didn't for some reason. They
