LOGINSelina gazed at him in disbelief, She had never imagined seeing him ever again, not here not in this position.
The stranger to whom she had clung in the dark, departed silently before daybreak without a word.
He appears completely different now, calm and composed, wearing a costly navy blue suit, a high-end watch, and immaculately shined shoes.
He gazed at her incredulously, as if she were a question he was unable to answer.
Darius took a slow step forward.
“Yes,” he said, still stunned. “We met… .”
Juliana’s brows arched. She glanced between them, suspicious and annoyed.
Selina managed to utter. “It was… a long time ago.”
Darius turned to Juliana, his tone shifting, “Why is she here?”
Juliana crossed her arms. “She applied for the customer care role.” And I was just concluding the interview.
Darius’s gaze snapped back to Selina, then to Juliana. “Concluding?” he whispered sharply.
Juliana hesitated. “Well, yes. I was explaining to her that she might not be a perfect fit for our image because she doesn't have corporate experience.”
Selina’s cheeks burned. She felt like disappearing.
“Juliana,” Darius said calmly but firmly. “I want to speak with Miss James privately.
Juliana blinked. “Sir?”
“Now pls,” he said.
She nodded and gathered her tablet. “Of course.”
She left without saying another word, shutting the door behind her.
Selina swallowed hard, “You are the boss,” she said less audibly.
He sighed deeply and ran a hand through his hair. “One of them,” he said “Darius King. CEO.”
Selina's stomach sank. She was stunned! King. Of course. King International.
Her eyes widened “I have no idea…… I mean that night .”
“I didn't either,” he said quickly, “I was just out trying to forget things.”
They both stood there facing each other, their minds thick with the past neither of them had spoken of.
“I never thought I would see you again,” Selina admitted.
“Me neither,” Darius said softly. “You disappeared before I even woke up.” Selina looked down, “I didn't know what to say.” I was not myself that night, I was broken.
“So was I.”
Their eyes locked once more, and there was a brief silence in the room, the kind that spoke louder than words. Darius cleared his throat in an attempt to regain his composure.
"Why didn't you say anything when I walked in?"
“I didn't recognize you immediately,” she admitted, until just now. And when I did… I panicked.” He nodded slowly “And you are here now looking for work.”
“Yes, I’m a single mother. Things have been…..rough for me so far, and I need this job.” Darius studied her, and she looked thinner, tired but determined. And he had noticed something else that night, A shadow behind her strength.
“How is your daughter?” he asked.
She was startled. “How did you know?”
“You mentioned her briefly that night.” Selina sighed, Stormy's fine, she is in school. There was silence for a moment, then Darius asked “Did you want the position?”
Selina looked at him, eyes wide. “More than anything.”
He nodded once, “You've got it.” Her mouth fell open. “Just like that.”
“You have experience. I trust my judgment more than Juliana's. And I remember you being sincere.” Tears gathered in Selina's eyes “Thank you.”
“You will start on Monday. I will have HR send you the details.” She blinked quickly, holding back tears.
“I don't know what to say.”
“Don't say anything, just be on time.”
She let out a slight smile. “I will, I promise.”
He opened the door and they both stepped into the hallway, Juliana was waiting nearby, arms crossed.
“Juliana,” Darius said calmly. “Selina will be joining us as our customer care associate. Please prepare her contract and onboarding packet.”
Juliana's face paled. “Sir?”
“ You heard me.”
He walked away without a second glance. Selina felt Juliana stare, but she didn't care. For the first time in years, she felt like she had luck on her side.
The week passed, and Selina spent the little she had to buy a clean notebook and a new pair of shoes. She borrowed a black blazer from Mercy and pressed her skirt until it looked almost new.
Monday morning arrived, Stormy hugged her tight before Mercy walked her to school, leaving Selina to take the bus to the office alone.
She arrived fifteen minutes early, The receptionist smiled calmly, “Welcome Miss James, Please take the elevator to the fifth floor, You will be meeting with the executive assistant for orientation.”
Selina nodded trying not to show her shaking hands.
The fifth floor was quieter. She was greeted by Mallisa, Darius’ assistant, who was kind and was in her early thirties, She handed her a badge and a welcome packet.
“Follow me,” Mallisa said warmly “You will be working for the client service wing. I will introduce you to your team.”
The office was stunning, everywhere was well organized, and soft hum of phones and finger typing. Her name was printed on a tag on her neat and uncluttered desk.
The rest of the morning passed quickly as HR paperwork, software walkthroughs, and introductions took place. She tried to absorb every word, every introduction, while maintaining a composed smile.
She eats a sandwich she packed from home while taking a peaceful lunch break in the staff lounge. She let herself think that she was finally starting over afresh as she glanced out the window watching clouds pass.
She was still lost in thought when the lounge door opened and someone stepped in. She was still deep in thought. It wasn't until she heard that deep familiar voice that she looked up.
“You settling in okay?”
She looked up.
Darius stood across from her, holding coffee. But something in his tone felt gentler now. Less like the powerful C.E.O. and more like the man she met that night.
“I am.” she replied, managing a calm smile “Thanks for asking.”
“I meant to check earlier,” he said, walking a bit closer, but not enough to draw attention. “It's your first day. Did everything feel manageable?”
“Yes, Malissa and others have been very helpful. “Good,” she said.
“How is your day going so far?” he said.
“Honestly I've been loving it,” Selina remarked smiling. Darius nodded “You’re already standing out, Keep it up.” He turned and left.
Selina sat frozen for a moment, his words of encouragement sinking slowly into her stomach. She
her lunch quietly, wondering why his presence still unsettled her in ways she couldn't name.
By the end of the week, Selina’s name was already whispered among team leads.
She blends in faster than expected, resolving miscommunication without being told, She offered to stay late to help with end-of-day reporting.
Malissa watched her with admiration, “You’re different,” she said one afternoon. “Most people act like they are doing the company a favor. But you work like your life depends on it.”
Selina smiled.
“It did,” she said in her mind.
Selina's face went pale as she stared at the note, hoping that gazing at it longer might change the words, but it didn’t, someone was after her life.A wave of fear swept through her chest.“Darius…” she whispered.Darius said nothing. His face became completely expressionless as he carefully folded the note and slipped it back into the envelope. The security guard shifted nervously. “Sir…”Darius finally looked up.“Where is the man who delivered this?”“He disappeared before we could stop him.”Darius’s jaw tightened. “Check every security camera, I want every second of footage reviewed.”“Yes, sir.”“And lock down the gates.”The guard nodded immediately before hurrying away.Shortly after, Melissa’s voice came through the phone. “Sir, we found something.”Darius straightened. “What is it?”“The person who delivered the envelope wasn’t a man.” Selina looked up immediately.“What?” Melissa continued, “The security footage was enhanced. The visitor was a woman disguised in oversized
Standing at the doorway was Juliana. For a brief moment, nobody spoke, Juliana looked just as surprised to find them together. Her gaze moved from Darius to Selina, then back again. “Juliana?” Darius’s voice turned cold instantly. “What are you doing here?” Juliana swallowed.Unlike her usual polished appearance, she looked exhausted. Her makeup was gone, her hair slightly disheveled, and there were dark circles beneath her eyes. “I need to talk to you,” she said quietly. Darius folded his arms. “At my house?”“I know I shouldn’t be here,” Juliana exclaimed “Then why are you by this time of the day?”Juliana’s eyes briefly landed on Selina before returning to Darius. “Because you’re not answering my calls.” The room became tense. Selina stood there silently, observing. This wasn’t the confident Juliana she had met at the mart today nor the Juliana she used to know at the office. This woman looked desperate.Darius’s expression remained unmoved. “You were suspended,” he said. “Tha
Night came quickly. The house gradually fell into silence, with soft lights glowing across the living room as Selina sat quietly on the couch, watching Liam and Stormy. Somehow, the two children had bonded so quickly. Liam showed her his toys, his cartoons, even his favorite snacks, while Stormy happily followed him around, still clutching her princess doll.Their laughter filled the room warmly.Selina found herself smiling as she watched them. Just a few hours ago, Stormy had been trembling in fear inside the mall. Now she was laughing freely again as if nothing had happened. Children heal so easily; if only adults could do the same, Selina thought quietly.A maid walked past with a tray in her hand. Selina looked up slightly. “Excuse me,” she called softly. The maid stopped politely. “Yes, ma’am?”“Where is Mr. King?”“He’s in his room.”Selina nodded. “Thank you.”She glanced once more at Liam and Stormy before standing up quietly. The children barely noticed her leave, too busy p
The mall's automatic doors slid open as Selina and Stormy exited. Selina adjusted her shopping bags while Stormy walked beside her, clutching her princess doll tightly. "Mommy, can we come back again?” Stormy asked, gazing up eagerly. Selina beamed. “Of course. But not every day, okay?" Stormy giggled happily.Selina moved to the side and retrieved her phone. “I’ll call a ride,” she said. In a few minutes, a car was assigned. She meticulously checked the details—license plate, driver’s name—just as she always does. Cautious.“That’s our car,” she said softly as it pulled up a few meters ahead. The vehicle slowed to a stop. Selina took a step forward, her eyes scanning the plate number again. Match. She nodded slightly. “Come on, Stormy.”They approached it. Selina leaned slightly to check the driver through the window. “Good afternoon—”“Mommy,” Stormy suddenly interrupted.Selina paused. “Yes?”“My shoe…”Selina looked down and noticed the lace was loose, dragging a little on the gro
Darius didn’t look up as Melissa entered his office. “You asked for her contact,” she said, placing a small note on his desk. Darius’s eyes moved to it. Selina’s number. For a brief second, he simply stared at it. “You don’t usually cross that line,” Melissa added quietly.Darius picked up the paper. Melissa looked at him for a moment, then nodded and walked out without saying a word. The door shut quietly behind her. Darius leaned back in his chair, still holding the number. Then, without overthinking it, he dialed her number.Selina was gently settling Stormy into sleep when her phone suddenly rang. She looked at the screen, an unknown number. Hesitating for a moment, she finally answered. “Hello?” She heard a familiar voice on the other end. “It’s Darius.” She sat up straighter, startled. “Sir—” “Take tomorrow off,” he cut in. She blinked in surprise. “A day off?”“Yes.”“I'm okay; I can go to work” “You fainted." "I'm fine now." "No, you’re not,” he replied softly. "You need to re
Darius leaned in a bit. "Let’s not waste any more time." His fingers gently tapped the desk as he asked, "Tell me everything you know about what happened on the stairs." Juliana slightly furrowed her brow. "Nothing” she replied. "I only heard that Selina slipped.”Melissa let out a quiet breath, almost like a scoff. Juliana glanced at her briefly before returning her gaze to Darius. “I don’t see why I’m being questioned,” she added. Darius didn’t react right away. Instead, he reached for something on his desk. A piece of paper. He slid it toward her. “Look at it.” Juliana’s hand moved slowly as she picked it up. The moment her eyes landed on the image, her heart skipped a beat. It was blurry. But clear enough. She stood beside the stairwell, her fingers gripping the page slightly. She managed a small laugh. "This?" she asked softly. "I walk that hallway almost every day." Darius kept his gaze fixed on her face. "You were there minutes before the incident." "That doesn't prove anything.
The city lights gently reflected on the windshield as Darius carefully navigated through the quiet streets. It was quite late, and most offices had already closed for the day, leaving the roads calmer than usual. Despite the peaceful surroundings, his mind remained restless. His fingers gently gripp
Darius didn’t know what it was about Selina that kept pulling him, He had been constantly thinking about her ever since she set foot in the company.Maybe it was the silence in her eyes, or the way she never smiled unless she meant it, or maybe how she worked. Whatever it was he found himself watc
Selina stared at the little white rectangle as the second pink line appeared, It was bright and clear not even faded.“Positive,” Selina whispered. She was in a state of shock, her hand was trembling, her knees were not balanced and she sank to the edge of the bathtub. “No” she whispered.”No, no,
Chapter 1: The Next Morning In a quiet room, Selina gently opened her eyes. She found herself in an unfamiliar place, and the silk sheet was knotted around her legs. She immediately closed her eyes back “Is this a dream” she said in her mind, She rubbed her hand over her face thinking that
