Trembling, her knees starting to ache from the kneeling, she peers up at him again to see how he runs his hand through his hair, exasperated, and scoffing before he looks down again.

“You really are shameless to be able to cut contact and disappear on me for seven whole years, and now you return, and the first thing you say to me, is not an apology but to ask me for money? Just how defiant are you?”

Mavis frowns, wiping her eyes. Then she stands to her feet, dusting off her knees. “It’s fine if you do not want to help me, it is fine if you do not want to give me the money, but do not ask me for an apology when I am the one that was wronged!” She exclaims mildly.

Lance gazes at her. Her normally cheerful eyes, so bright and full of life, now look like they have been worn out with age, as though she has seen much more than any average human should at the age of twenty-five. Her eyes look haunted and there are bags under her eyes that look as though she’d hurriedly dabbed some concealer on, just so he won’t see them.

He takes one step towards her, reaching out, but she takes two back, looking at his hands warily.

He drops his hand, grunting, “Fine then. If I don’t get an apology or an explanation from you, then there is no point having this conversation.”

Mavis pauses for a second before nodding, twice. “Fine by me. You still are the uncaring jerk you have always been. You’d never know just how much that time with you has cost me. Imagine what it’s like being—“ She stops herself immediately, afraid that she’s said too much.

Lance’s eyes cloud over. “I don’t know what it’s like being what?”

Mavis closes off, the fear climbing back into her eyes as she whips around and grabs her bag off the couch in the room. “It’s nothing. Thank you for seeing me.”

“Wait!” Lance finds himself ordering, the curiosity a little too hard to ignore. He walks around her and comes to a stop in front of her. He takes a step towards her, she takes one backwards, until her back hits the glass table, ending her capability to go any further backwards. But he takes one more step, before leaning into her. “You can’t start a sentence and leave the other person hanging, that’s rude.”

With her blood thumping in her ears seeing how close he is, she swallows deeply, finding her eyes flickering again and again to his lips and how much he had always been a good kisser, managing to sweep her off her damn feet every single time, until that time. He had always been good at evading her need for privacy and even now, that single act of his takes her breath away.

Breath away…

That phrase reminds her of why she’d come to see him, with her heart longing for those lips on any part of her body but her head in complete disagreement, she side steps out of his arm’s cage. “I have to go, I can’t play around with you, and you’re as insufferable as you’ve always been.”

“What if I agree to give you the five million dollars? And more…?”

Mavis stops in her tracks, then slowly, she turns around. “There is a condition, isn’t there?”

With that sexily sly smirk of his, “Of course, it’s pretty simple.”

Nursing one last smidge of hope in the man, she nods. “What is this condition of yours?”

Rubbing his finger on her bare shoulder in small, seductive circles, “Spend one week with me, just me. Same place as before, but this time, I’ll pay you by the day, by the hour, but your five million will be the down payment.”

The offer is tempting as fuck.

This man, plus so much money, enough to do everything she needs it for, is as tempting as getting as a lottery ticket, all paid, to Fiji island…

But—

“You’d be dreaming then, I will never, ever, choose willingly to have anything to do with you. Go after your famous red-heads, I am pretty sure one of them will find the offer more tempting that I do.”

Without any warning, he tilts his head to the back and bursts into laughter. He reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a card, putting it into her bag. “Who knows, you might change your mind. It’s my personal number, give me a call if you ever consider my offer positively.”

Not sparing him another word, she turns on her heel and walks out there, happy that her dignity is still mildly intact at least, because whenever it came to Lance Wesker, she’d never been able to think straight.

She takes a cab home, and comes to a stop in front of a dingy apartment. She looks up at the window of the second floor, sighing before heading inside.

She makes her way up the stairs, opening the door to silence. Frowning, she goes inside, looking around, a look of panic slowly creeping into her face.

“Nate… NATE!” She yells, hoping he’s in there somewhere, possibly just sleeping. She enters into the room and there is no one in there. Suddenly, the closet door bursts open and a boy comes bouncing out, running into her hands with laughter and excitement.

“Nathan.” She whispers, catching him in her hands, pressing her lips into his jet black hair, one of the things he has so in common with his father.

“Mommy,” the boy starts, hugging her legs.

She picks him up with an easy smile, pressing more kisses across his body as he laughs in her hands especially when she gets to his ticklish part where he doubles over in laughter trying in vain to fight off her hands but she stops herself after some seconds, letting him finish laughing before she calms down.

“Why are you alone here?”

“Nancy left an hour ago, said she had to attend to something urgent.”

“Okay, what would my little prince love for dinner? Hm? Mommy will make you whatever you want to eat…”

“Hm… can I have cake for dinner?”

Mavis bursts into laughter, pulling his cheeks playfully. “The doctor said you should avoid sweet things for now, should we have some chicken instead? We can go buy it together?”

He nods, jiggling excitedly. “Yes yes. I’ll eat chicken.”

“Let Mommy go get freshened up then, get busy with some SpongeBob, okay?”

“I want to do my homework instead.”

Mavis smiles, her heart full of love for this sweet little boy. “Go ahead then, we’ll look through it after having dinner, okay?”

As she turned to go, “Mommy,”

“Yes love?”

“In school today, our teacher asked us to bring a picture of our Daddy and Mommy on a trip. Will Daddy come and take a picture with us so I can submit it?”

Mavis stops in her tracks, inhaling deeply.

His father…

His father does not even know of his existence.

  • Love Me, Loathe Me.   Charlotte opens Lance's Eyes to Mavis's scheming... (sorry, can't think of a better chapter title to save my life rn)

Charlotte barely remembers walking out of the house in so much anger that her fingers were curled into fists beside her. The front door had closed behind her with a heavy thud, but the echo of Lance’s words still rang loudly in her ears, her mind unable to ungrasp it. "...You were never my future." Well, ouch of all ouchs! He, of all people, could say so her to her after she'd stuck to him for so long? Whenever his company was up or down, contract gotten or denied, she'd always been available for him but now that some twat has appeared, she's suddenly out of his future? She stiffens a scoff. Her heels struck sharply against the stone path as she marched toward her car, her jaw clenched so tightly it almost hurt. The cool late morning air did nothing to calm the heat rushing through her chest. Humiliation and fury burned under her skin, so hot that she just wants to scream right there, on the spot, but that'll just justify that woman's calmness further. That annoyingly calm woma

  • Love Me, Loathe Me.   High Fives

Mavis holds back a scoff when she recognizes her from the day before.Charlotte on the other hand as well, she pauses when she sees Mavis, right in front of Lance, the space between them quite questionable. The confusion shifts to irritation which also shifts instantly into something possessive.“Well… Well… Well,” Charlotte starts slowly, eyes flicking over Mavis from head to toe, lingering just long enough to be insulting. “This is unexpected. Everything about this is, I did not think I was going to see you here, you left so heartbroken just yesterday and you’re already here today.”Lance straightens slightly, a warning look coming on to his face. “Charlotte, watch what you say to my guest.”She looks at him then, brows lifting. “You didn’t tell me you had company.”Mavis feels the frost from Charlotte settle in her bones, but since she’s riled up and worse, here without her own permission, she’d at least defend it against this wanna be.There is something between her and Lance thou

  • Love Me, Loathe Me.   August Visitor

The drive into Lance’s huge estate is quiet and smooth, the city giving way to wide stretches of green and tall, well-kept trees right at the entrance of the large estate.Black iron gates open automatically, and once they pass through, the world outside feels far away and irrelevant. The driveway curves through orderly lawns and trimmed hedges, everything neat without being showy. When the house comes into view, it is large and solid, built of pale stone with wide windows and clean lines that make it look both modern and long-established.The space around it is vast, open, and carefully maintained, with nothing out of place.Nathan presses his face to the window, openly amazed while he takes all of the sight in, while Mavis sits stiffly, taking it all in with less show of interest like her son but more of unease. As the car slows near the entrance, staff are already waiting there, waiting to receive their visitors and boss.Mavis realizes, with a tightening in her chest, that this is

  • Love Me, Loathe Me.   Unhinged Lance Wesker

Three hours later, Mavis is sitting at the dining table doing some paperwork. The tears have long dried, but the hollow feeling remains, lodged somewhere between her ribs, making every breath feel slightly too shallow. Nathan has fallen asleep on the couch after cartoons and snacks and questions she carefully dodged, his small body curled around a pillow, thumb tucked absentmindedly into the seam of the fabric. Now that Lance knows where she lives, she won't leave out the fact that he might do something crazy like send a kidnapper to come pick Nathan up in the dead of the night. He's married but as little as she knows, does not have a child with the redhead yet so of course, he'll come for his son.She watches curled up Nathan for a long time. This is her life, she reminds herself. This quiet, fragile, hard won normalcy is what she's always wanted and she'll get it now that her son is doing well.Whatever Lance Wesker thinks he can claim does not erase seven years of doing this alon

  • Love Me, Loathe Me.   Mine as much as Yours!

"Yes!" Nathan responded excitedly to the jab disguised as a question.Lance sets his fork down slowly, a small frown creasing his face. The soft clink against the plate sounds louder than it should in the small dining space, and for a moment, that is the only sound between them. Nathan, oblivious to the shift but sensitive enough to feel it, stops clapping and looks between the two adults with mild confusion.Mavis does not look at Lance. She keeps her attention on her plate, chewing deliberately, jaw tight, as though the food suddenly requires more effort than it did five seconds ago. Her shoulders are squared, posture rigid, the very picture of someone bracing for some sort of physical impact.Lance exhales through his nose, a controlled breath that does nothing to hide the strain in his expression. When he speaks, his voice is calm, but there is an edge beneath it, sharpened by exhaustion and restraint.“That isn’t what I meant,” he says evenly.Mavis finally looks up then, her eye

  • Love Me, Loathe Me.   Blanketed Jabs

He is slumped slightly and very uncomfortably to one side, head resting against the wall, long legs stretched out awkwardly in front of him. His jacket is folded beneath his head like a pillow, his tie loosened, shirt wrinkled from hours of wear, the flowers lay around him in wilted petals while his pristine face, usually so controlled and sharp, is slack with exhaustion. He is fast asleep right there at the door, he didn't leave before even after she'd closed the door in his face, the door to her own life and Nathan's but he'd stayed...For a long moment, she simply stares at him.Anger flares first, quickly.and quite familiar given that's the feeling he usually makes her have first, then closely followed by hurt, then confusion, then something dangerously close to tenderness. She thinks of all the things she could do in this moment, all the reactions she has every right to choose from, reactions that no one would fault her for either...She could very easily wake him and tell him
